Recently, there has been a big movement towards converging engineering education and practice by means of defining clear and complete program goals. In this context, a large scale of educational institutions face challenges on how to specify the desired educational goals for a specific discipline and on how to instantiate and evaluate their program-specific designs according to these goals. We have defined a curricula design model for designing, redesigning, and evaluating systems and computing engineering (S&C) programs. The core of this model is the orientation to projects for the definition of educational goals that facilitate the definition of courses that integrate a set of these desired goals. This paper presents the core elements of the curricula design model and the methodology to instantiate it into a new program design that satisfies a desired professional profile. The curricula design model has been validated through its instantiation for redesigning the S&C program at the University of Los Andes in Colombia.

This paper presents the recent status of a PhD thesis research, with an innovative proposal for the development of Digital Systems Laboratory classes in engineering Schools. The described system uses IT and Communication over Internet in order to improve the professor's interaction, multiplying his presence and his support for the students. Joining the flexibility of distance learning with the interactivity and the intensive support of the traditional presential learning, this system permits to enlarge the delivered contents and learning efficiency of a basic and conceptual discipline. Further, a new evaluation and approval procedure is developed and applied. This methodology permits to ensure that the approved student actually knows the entire transmitted knowledge and by using a new concept evaluation grade, it is possible to measure the difficulties of each student in passing through this learning process. This system could be applied with small changes in other knowledge areas.

This study chronicles the drama played out in universities across the world. Lecturers from varying disciplines and backgrounds attempt to teach subjects using diverse methodologies or no methodology at all. Academia is presently divided into two distinct camps. Those who are in favour of pedagogical training regardless of discipline and believe it enhances and enriches the teaching and learning process and those who simply are not in favour of it. The alarming result has been that in each university, there is no standardization of modules taught or learnt or indeed no formal system of how a module should be delivered to aid module authors and leaders with no requisite pedagogical training. This has increasingly led to falling grades, low retention rates and much disappointment on the part of the raison d' etre of the university, its valued clients - the students. This study seeks to outline the problem, recommend a solution and propose more extensive utilisation of existing technology that could help to alleviate the problem in some way.
