Immersive learning has gained significant attention with the rising trend of spatial computing, particularly in the after-pandemic era. Numerous research has explored the potential of immersive learning in higher education, primarily on the educational sector. However, prior research has frequently focused too narrowly on the effects of technology and neglected to address the crucial element influencing successful immersive learning in higher education. This study seeks to pinpoint the crucial element contributing to the development of immersive learning experiences. The methodology uses a systematic literature review (SLR) from 2018 up to 2023 to investigate the critical factors of immersive Learning in Higher Education. From the 728 papers initially retrieved, 274 were considered potential candidates, and ultimately, 86 articles were selected based on their relevance to the research question. The results reveal that the critical factors include learning design, technology, immersion, engagement, interactivity, and usability. Academic interests will benefit from this SLR's consequences as institutions create models for designing suitable immersive learning, especially within the context of higher education.

Forged content shared widely on social media platforms is a major social problem that requires increased regulation and poses new challenges to the research community. The recent proliferation of hyper-realistic deepfake videos has drawn attention to the threat of audio and visual forgeries. Most previous work on detecting AI-generated fake videos only utilizes visual modality or audio modality. While there are some methods in the literature that exploit audio and visual modalities to detect forged videos, they have not been comprehensively evaluated on multi-modal datasets of deepfake videos involving acoustic and visual manipulations. Moreover, these existing methods are mostly based on CNN and suffer from low detection accuracy. Inspired by the recent success of Transformer in various fields, to address the challenges posed by deepfake technology, in this paper, we propose an Audio-Visual Transformer-based Ensemble Network (AVTENet) framework that considers both acoustic manipulation and visual manipulation to achieve effective video forgery detection. Specifically, the proposed model integrates several purely transformer-based variants that capture video, audio, and audio-visual salient cues to reach a consensus in prediction. For evaluation, we use the recently released benchmark multi-modal audio-video FakeAVCeleb dataset. For a detailed analysis, we evaluate AVTENet, its variants, and several existing methods on multiple test sets of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. Experimental results show that our best model outperforms all existing methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance on Testset-I and Testset-II of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. © 2023, CC BY.

We investigate the use of animal videos (observations) to improve Reinforcement Learning (RL) efficiency and performance in navigation tasks with sparse rewards. Motivated by theoretical considerations, we make use of weighted policy optimization for off-policy RL and describe the main challenges when learning from animal videos. We propose solutions and test our ideas on a series of 2D navigation tasks. We show how our methods can leverage animal videos to improve performance over RL algorithms that do not leverage such observations. © 2022, CC BY.

Using domain compilation, we present a narrative planning system that is capable of creating narrative plans that use both character intention and character beliefs. We introduce a model capable of representing character beliefs in PDDL domains. This model allows characters to fail at actions when their beliefs about the world differ from the actual world state. Domains of this type can be compiled into purely intentional domains, and fed as input to intentional planners. The resulting stories feature characters that pursue their own intentions based on their own knowledge of the world, learn from mistakes to update their beliefs, and communicate information to each other. Laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) with Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) powder is a promising method for fabricating medical implants owing to its ability to fabricate precise structures and the biocompatibility of the fabricated material. The use of a pulsed laser source in a PBF-LB/M system has been proposed for stable irradiation with an appropriate amount of energy. In this study, the pulse width modulation (PWM) method was adapted into a PBF-LB/M machine with a laser that operates in both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed wave modes. The effects of CW and PWM lasers on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the fabricated material based on the volumetric energy density (VED) calculated using the average power were compared. Results revealed that the uniform distribution of energy irradiation across the entire region ensured the similarity in the porosities and Vickers hardness tendencies conferred by CW and PWM lasers in the specimens according to the VED. In contrast, the spatially nonuniform distribution of the laser irradiation resulted in a significantly higher porosity in the specimen fabricated using the PWM laser than that produced using the CW laser at the same VED, resulting in reduced compressive yield strength. Additionally, the electron backscattered diffraction analysis of the grain structures in the fabricated specimens revealed that there were no significant differences in the average grain size, phase distribution, and misorientation angle of the samples produced using CW and PWM lasers at the same VED. However, sharper grains with a grain shape aspect ratio of less than 0.3 were 7% higher in specimens produced using the PWM laser. This study highlights the possibility of fabricating medical implants with desired patient bone-specific microstructure and mechanical properties. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Maximum likelihood estimation is an essential tool in the procedure to impute missing data in climate/weather applications. By defining a particular statistical model, the maximum likelihood estimation can be used to understand the underlying structure of given geospatial data. The Gaussian random field has been widely used to describe geospatial data, as one of the most popular models under the hood of maximum likelihood estimation. Computation of Gaussian log-likelihood demands operations on a dense symmetric positive definite matrix, often parameterized by the Matérn correlation function. This computation of the log-likelihood requires $\mathcal{O}(n^{2})$ storage and $\mathcal{O}(n^{3})$ operations, which can be a huge task considering that the number of geographical locations, $n$ , now commonly reaches into the millions. However, despite its appealing theoretical properties, the assumptions of Gaussianity may be unrealistic since real data often show signs of skewness or have some extreme values. Herein, we consider the Tukey ${g-}$ and $-h$ (TGH) random field as an example of a non-Gaussian random field that shows more robustness in modeling geospatial data by including two more parameters to incorporate skewness and heavy tail features in the model. This work provides the first HPC implementation of the TGH random field's inference on parallel hardware architectures. Using task-based programming models associated with dynamic runtime systems, our implementation leverages the high concurrency of current parallel systems. This permits to run the exact log-likelihood evaluation of the Tukey g-and-h (TGH) random fields for a decent number of geospatial locations. To tackle large-scale problems, we provide additionally an implementation of the given model using two different low-rank approximations. We compress the aforementioned positive-definite symmetric matrix for computing the log-likelihood and rely on the Tile Low-Rank (TLR) and the Hierarchical Off-Diagon

Many industrial and engineering problems are transformed into optimization problems and solved using various numerical based methods. One of the frequently used method is the Steepest descent algorithm which converge to the solution in only one iteration, given the current point and provided the quadratic function is positive definite. However, this method is not suitable for large scale functions because of lack of gradient information and high computational cost. This study aims to suggest a new conjugate gradient algorithm for motion control of robotic manipulators and unconstrained optimization models. The convergence result of the new algorithm would be discussed under some suitable conditions. Computational simulations are carried out on the discrete-time kinematics equation of a two-joint planar robot manipulator to illustrates the efficiency of the algorithm. The algorithm was further extended to unconstrained optimization problems in addition to motion control of robotic manipulators. Preliminary results prove that the new algorithm is efficient compared to the existing CG algorithm. The comparisons are made using the set of 50 standard benchmark functions including number of iterations and CPU time. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Role of simulation models in understanding the generation of behavior in C. elegans

There has been a proliferation of studies using simulation models to achieve a system-level understanding of behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans. Here I discuss the different aims of these modeling approaches and review examples of each in the context of locomotion and spatial navigation in the worm. I argue that as the focus shifts from understanding sensorimotor transformations to understanding neuromechanical instantiations for how behaviors are generated, simulation models will become a more integral part of the experiment–theory cycle. I discuss the insights that simulation modeling provides that complement information obtained from experimental discovery methods. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most common injuries associated with sports. Knee osseous morphology can play a role in increased knee instability. Our hypothesis is that the morphological features of the knee, as seen in knee osseous morphology, can contribute to increased knee instability and, thus, increase the likelihood of ACL tear. To test this relationship, it is necessary to segment the femur and tibia bones and extract relevant imaging features. However, manual annotation of 3D medical images, such as on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, can be a time-consuming and challenging task. In this work, we propose an automated pipeline for creating pseudo-masks of the femur and tibia bones in knee MRI. Our approach involves unsupervised segmentation and deep learning models to classify ACL integrity (intact or torn). Our results demonstrate a high agreement between the automated pseudo-masks and a radiologist's manual segmentation, which also leads to comparable AUC values for the ACL integrity classification. © 2023 SPIE.

Quantifying gender imbalance in East Asian academia: Research career and citation practice

Gender imbalance in academia has been confirmed in terms of a variety of indicators, and its magnitude often varies from country to country. Europe and North America, which cover a large fraction of research workforce in the world, have been the main geographical regions for research on gender imbalance in academia. However, the academia in East Asia, which accounts for a substantial fraction of research, may be exposed to strong gender imbalance because Asia has been facing persistent and stronger gender imbalance in society at large than Europe and North America. Here we use publication data between 1950 and 2020 to analyze gender imbalance in academia in China, Japan, and South Korea in terms of the number of researchers, their career, and citation practice. We found that, compared to the average of the other countries, gender imbalance is larger in these three East Asian countries in terms of the number of researchers and their citation practice and additionally in Japan in terms of research career. Moreover, we found that Japan has been exposed to the larger gender imbalance than China and South Korea in terms of research career and citation practice. Copyright © 2023, The Authors.
