This paper proposes an energy-efficient Haar transform architecture using efficient adders circuits. Nine levels of decomposition in a fixed-point format are used in the architectures. The Processing Module (PM) of Haar explores efficient Parallel Prefix Adders (PPA) and adder compressors. Since power-of-two operations approximate one of the inputs of the PM module, efficient adder compressors implement them. It allowed a very high precision adjustment of the transform coefficient. The architectures were described in VHDL and synthesized using the ST 65nm CMOS cell library. The results show that the Haar architecture with 4-2 and 5-2 compressors in the PM module, both with the recombination line with a Sklansky (SK) adder, is more efficient. It has a reduction of 33.6% in the cell area, with a 35.7% reduction in total power in comparison with the literature. Moreover, the Haar architecture with 4-2 and 5-2 adder compressors is more efficient than the one using the tool-selected implementation of the behavioral "+" (sum) in VHDL, with 23% of power reduction.

This work explores the 8-2 adder compressor in the addition tree of the Sum of Squared Differences (SSD) architecture. SSD is a distortion metric of the motion estimation in the High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. Distortion metrics are the most time-consuming operations of the encoder. SSD hardware architecture consists of a sum tree that accumulates the calculation of the partial values. The addition tree in the SSD opens an opportunity of exploring efficient addition schemes such as the combinations of efficient adder compressors. The SSD architectures herein presented are compared regarding power dissipation using real video sequences. Our work overcomes the state-of-the-art related work which they investigated different SSD hardware architectures concluding that employing the synthesis tool arithmetic operators are the best choice to reduce the power dissipation. According to our results, we reveal that the SSD employing the 8-2 hierarchical adder compressor combined with a Brent-Kung adder in the final sum saves on average 29.4 % of total power dissipation, when comparing with SSD implemented using the arithmetic operators automatically selected by the synthesis tool.

Multipliers are present in a large variety of applications. However, it is usually responsible for most of the power dissipation. On the other hand, the squared multiplier is a particular case of the general-purpose multiplier, in which both operands are the same, proportioning many architecture optimizations. This paper introduces the radix-2 m squared array multiplier architecture. Our architecture proposal for the squared multiplier is the first to reduces the partial products by splitting the operands into mbit groups. Our squared multiplier architecture explores different adder schemes in the multipliers adder tree. As a case study, we demonstrate our squared multiplier proposal for m=2 (radix-4). We investigated the Wallace and Dadda addition trees employing as final carry propagating adder (CPA) the Ripple Carry adder (RCA) and with the adder automatically selected by the synthesis tool. Our best radix-4 squared multiplier proposal employs the Dadda technique and the RCA to implement the adder tree, showing significant energy savings of 20.5%, 56.5%, and 47.4%, for 8, 16, and 32 bits, respectively, compared to the squared multiplier automatically selected by the synthesis tool. Furthermore, our best radix-4 squared multiplier proposal outperforms the Vedic squared multiplier with energy savings in about 21.5%, 71.0%, and 9.0%, respectively, for 8, 16, and 32 bits.

When studied at finite temperature, Yang-Mills theories in 3+1 dimensions display the presence of confinement/deconfinement phase transitions, which are known to be of first order—the SU(2) gauge theory being the exception. Theoretical as well as phenomenological considerations indicate that it is essential to establish a precise characterization of these physical systems in proximity of such phase transitions. We present and test a new method to study the critical region of parameter space in non-Abelian quantum field theories on the lattice, based upon the logarithmic linear relaxation (LLR) algorithm. We apply this method to the SU(3) Yang-Mills lattice gauge theory, and perform extensive calculations with one fixed choice of lattice size. We identify the critical temperature, and measure interesting physical quantities near the transition. Among them, we determine the free energy of the model in the critical region, exposing for the first time its multivalued nature with a numerical calculation from first principles, providing this novel evidence in support of a first-order phase transition. This study sets the stage for future high-precision measurements, by demonstrating the potential of the method.

We report the effects of the spacer and the single-charge trap (SCT) on the voltage transfer characteristics of cylindrical-shape gate-all-around (GAA) silicon (Si) nanowire (NW) metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFETs). We explore the impact of low-x spacer, high-x spacer, and dual spacer (DS) on electrical characteristics of the GAA Si NW MOSFET with a gate length of 10 nm. Compared with the nominal device (i.e., the device without spacer), the device with DS possesses 68.8% reduction on the normalized off-current and 29.4% increase on the normalized on-current for n- and p-type devices. Similarly, 21.1% and 3.38% improvements on the normalized high and low noise margins can be achieved for the GAA Si NW complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) circuit. Notably, the voltage transfer characteristics induced by the acceptor- and donor-type SCT for the CMOS circuit with DS possesses 2.64% and 3.82% enhancements for the normalized high and low noise margins compared with the nominal one.

This research aims to help the user monitor their heart’s condition and notify other people in case of an emergency due to an abnormal heartbeat (normal heartbeat around 60-100 beats per minute). From the heart rate graph, the user could do a consultation with an expert in the nearest hospital using a map feature that will show the nearest hospital with a 1 KM radius from the user’s current location. The heart is undeniably an essential part of the human body system. The heart's missions are to pump blood to the lungs to expel the waste carbon dioxide that resulted from the respiration and pump blood that will deliver oxygen throughout the human body's circulation system. While the blood that carries oxygen being pumped throughout the human body, the heart will provide the oxygen to all cells. Body cells need to use oxygen to get the energy from food through a process called cellular respiration. Monitoring our heartbeat and pulse rate can increase people’s awareness about their heart’s health, motivating, and encouraging people to maintain a healthy eating plan and exercise. This research will be implemented ECG Sensor. The sensor will then send the data to the android application via HC-06 Bluetooth module. Monitoring the heart rate and analyzing the user’s heartbeat will be done in the android with a microcontroller device's help.

While several content management systems (CMS) and audience analytics tools are available for digital signage in the market, they are often sold separately and can be expensive. Therefore, this project aims to design a cost-effective and unified web-based solution for digital signage that combines content management and audience analytics functions, reducing the need for multiple purchases. This can be achieved by utilizing Raspberry Pi technology, known for its cost-effectiveness and versatility in integrations, along with a face recognition camera and machine learning methods. This proof of concept demonstrates the integration of these components to create a dynamic digital signage system. Overall, this project has the potential to offer an affordable solution for companies aiming to efficiently manage and optimize their digital marketing strategies, especially in the Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) Advertising space.

Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are gold-standard techniques for breast cancer detection. The newly contrast-enhanced digital mammography (CEDM) integrates the complementary strengths of FFDM and MRI, and is being incorporated into the practice of leading institutions. The current clinical practice using CEDM is sub-optimal because it is primarily based on clinicians' trained eyes. Automated diagnostic systems under the conventional machine learning paradigm suffer from drawbacks, such as the requirement for precise segmentation, extraction of shallow features that do not suffice for diagnostic images, and adoption of a sequential design without a global objective. We propose a deep learning (DL)-empowered diagnostic system using CEDM, the core of which is a novel dual-mode deep transfer learning (D2TL) model. The proposed system is innovative in several aspects, including (1) a dual-mode deep architecture design;(2) use of transfer learning to facilitate robust model estimation under small sample-size;(3) development of visualization techniques to help interpret the model results and facilitate inter- and intra-tumor malignancy quantification;and (4) minimization of human bias. We apply D2TL to classify benign vs. malignant tumors using the CEDM data collected from the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. D2TL outperforms competing models and approaches. © 2019, © 2019 “IISE”.

Trained and optimized for typical and fluent speech, speech AI works poorly for people with speech diversities, often interrupting them and misinterpreting their speech. The increasing deployment of speech AI in automated phone menus, AI-conducted job interviews, and everyday devices poses tangible risks to people with speech diversities. To mitigate these risks, this workshop aims to build a multidisciplinary coalition and set the research agenda for fair and accessible speech AI. Bringing together a broad group of academics and practitioners with diverse perspectives, including HCI, AI, and other relevant fields such as disability studies, speech language pathology, and law, this workshop will establish a shared understanding of the technical challenges for fair and accessible speech AI, as well as its ramifications in design, user experience, policy, and society. In addition, the workshop will invite and highlight first-person accounts from people with speech diversities, facilitating direct dialogues and collaboration between speech AI developers and the impacted communities. The key outcomes of this workshop include a summary paper that synthesizes our learnings and outlines the roadmap for improving speech AI for people with speech diversities, as well as a community of scholars, practitioners, activists, and policy makers interested in driving progress in this domain. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In high-sensitivity bolometers and calorimeters, the photon absorption often occurs at a finite distance from the temperature sensor to accommodate antennas or avoid the degradation of superconducting circuitry exposed to radiation. As a result, thermal propagation from the input to the temperature readout can critically affect detector performance. In this report we model the performance of a graphene bolometer, accounting for electronic thermal diffusion and dissipation via electron-phonon coupling at low temperatures in three regimes: clean, supercollision, and resonant scattering. Our results affirm the feasibility of a superconducting readout without Cooper-pair breaking by mid- and near-infrared photons, and provide a recipe for designing graphene absorbers for calorimetric single-photon detectors. We investigate the tradeoff between the input-readout distance and detector efficiency, and predict an intrinsic timing jitter of ∼2.7 ps.
