Video coding requires a massive computational effort leading to large power dissipation and energy consumption. Thus, energy efficiency becomes a significant concern especially under limited energy resources such as in mobile devices. Approximate computing is a promising technique to improve energy efficiency. Therefore, this work presents a new approximate subtractor operator to be used in video coding hardware accelerators. The proposed subtractor reduces power of a Sum of Absolute Differences (SAD) hardware accelerator on approximately 10.39% (on average of different videos) when compared to the use of the subtractor from the synthesis tool. It also presents a power reduction of 18.13% when compared to state-of-the-art approximate adder.

Medical image analysis places a significant focus on breast cancer, which poses a significant threat to women's health and contributes to many fatalities. An early and precise diagnosis of breast cancer through digital mammograms can significantly improve the accuracy of disease detection. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems must analyze the medical imagery and perform detection, segmentation, and classification processes to assist radiologists with accurately detecting breast lesions. However, early-stage mammography cancer detection is certainly difficult. The deep convolutional neural network has demonstrated exceptional results and is considered a highly effective tool in the field. This study proposes a computational framework for diagnosing breast cancer using a ResNet-50 convolutional neural network to classify mammogram images. To train and classify the INbreast dataset into benign or malignant categories, the framework utilizes transfer learning from the pretrained ResNet-50 CNN on ImageNet. The results revealed that the proposed framework achieved an outstanding classification accuracy of 93%, surpassing other models trained on the same dataset. This novel approach facilitates early diagnosis and classification of malignant and benign breast cancer, potentially saving lives and resources. These outcomes highlight that deep convolutional neural network algorithms can be trained to achieve highly accurate results in various mammograms, along with the capacity to enhance medical tools by reducing the error rate in screening mammograms.

Magnetic semimetals have increasingly emerged as lucrative platforms hosting spin-based topological phenomena in real and momentum spaces. Cr1+δTe2 is a self-intercalated magnetic transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), which exhibits topological magnetism and tunable electron filling. While recent studies have explored real-space Berry curvature effects, similar considerations of momentum-space Berry curvature are lacking. Here, the electronic structure and transport properties of epitaxial Cr1+δTe2 thin films are systematically investigated over a range of doping, δ (0.33 – 0.71). Spectroscopic experiments reveal the presence of a characteristic semi-metallic band region, which shows a rigid like energy shift with δ. Transport experiments show that the intrinsic component of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is sizable and undergoes a sign flip across δ. Finally, density functional theory calculations establish a link between the doping evolution of the band structure and AHE: the AHE sign flip is shown to emerge from the sign change of the Berry curvature, as the semi-metallic band region crosses the Fermi energy. These findings underscore the increasing relevance of momentum-space Berry curvature in magnetic TMDs and provide a unique platform for intertwining topological physics in real and momentum spaces. © 2023 The Authors. Recently, Vehicular Cloud Communication (VCC) has been gaining momentum targeting intelligent and efficient data transmission. VCC is a type of mobile ad-hoc network comprising heterogeneous vehicles sharing their resources to perform collaborative activities. In this paper, we propose a new semi-infrastructure file-browsing in order to provide Network as a service (NaaS) enabling internet-independent browsing. In our scenario, a central management platform plays the role of controlling and managing the selection of relaying vehicles supporting the source to destination file transmission procedure. Nagel-Schreckenberg rules for traffic cellular automata (CA) are used as the basis for our scenario simulation. Nagel-Schreckenberg rules simulate the behavior of a group of hypothetical vehicles moving across a highway. We study the reliability and efficiency of file transfer in such settings. Simulation results show that the number of selected relays required to establish the network highly impacts the probability of successfully sending the requested files. In addition, the distances between the selected relays influence the network throughput and the probability of network failure. Moreover, the density of relays strongly affects the overall delay that occurs due to the continuous re-transmission of the selected files among different hops. © 2019, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

Machine learning methods have been widely employed in robotics over the years, and recent developments in machine learning have completely re-shaped problem-solving in the area. Indeed, if we consider multi-objective planning, these models' optimization and learning capabilities can derive more robust strategies. Inspired by the species natural selection mechanism, Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) are among the best known computational approaches available for this purpose. In this scenario, this work proposed an EA model developed to find the best travel trajectory for a quadcopter in the “Desafio Petrobras” challenge. In the challenge, a set of landing platforms that the robot has to visit are displaced in the 3D-space. To find the best trajectory possible, we optimize an EA over a low-level control that can take the quadcopter from point A to B. We vary our fitness function to support more complex decisions. The software-in-the-loop technique was applied for a simulated quadrotor in the Coppelia simulated environment. The proposed approach has shown the capability to generate short trajectories while considering variables like UAV dynamics and energy consumption.

This paper proposes the use of approximate adder compressors for a low-power 8-point Modified Rounded Discrete Cosine Transform (MRDCT_(10)) implementation. The algebraic approximation of the MRDCT was previously introduced in the literature, whose resultant matrix is only composed of 0, 1 and -1 values. Therefore, the MRDCT can be efficiently implemented using only adders and subtractors. We present an environment for the synthesis of the MRDCT in Cadence Encounter RTL Compiler tool. The synthesis reports are based on a set of real images as input vectors to obtain valid power results. Our results show that the use of approximate adder/subtractor compressors in hardwired state-of-the-art 8-point approximate MRDCT_(10) achieves savings ranging from 26% to 52.54% when compared with the macro function (+) from the tool.

The Kalman filter is a signal processing algorithm that plays an essential role in real-time mobile applications as nano drones navigation, spacecraft orbit control, GPS positioning, image recognition, and sensor data fusion for wearable health monitoring. However, the Kalman filter is a compute-intensive kernel since it implements a high amount of complex matrix operations like multiplications and inversions. The most timing-consuming tasks of the Kalman filter is the Kalman gain. Therefore, this work presents four architectural solutions to explore real-time and energy-efficient Kalman gain processing.

Accurately predicting the non-equilibrium mechanical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials is essential for understanding their deformation, thermo-mechanical properties, and failure mechanisms. In this study, we parameterize and evaluate two machine learning (ML) interatomic potentials, SNAP and Allegro, for modeling the non-equilibrium behavior of monolayer MoSe2. Using a density functional theory (DFT) derived dataset, we systematically compare their accuracy and transferability against the physics-based Tersoff force field. Our results show that SNAP and Allegro significantly outperform Tersoff, achieving near-DFT accuracy while maintaining computational efficiency. Allegro surpasses SNAP in both accuracy and efficiency due to its advanced neural network architecture. Both ML potentials demonstrate strong transferability, accurately predicting out-of-sample properties such as surface stability, inversion domain formation, and fracture toughness. Unlike Tersoff, SNAP and Allegro reliably model temperature-dependent edge stabilities and phase transformation pathways, aligning closely with DFT benchmarks. Notably, their fracture toughness predictions closely match experimental measurements, reinforcing their suitability for large-scale simulations of mechanical failure in 2D materials. This study establishes ML-based force fields as a powerful alternative to traditional potentials for modeling non-equilibrium mechanical properties in 2D materials. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. A controlled fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicle is modeled based on a simplified low dimensional nonlinear dynamical system with additive disturbances. The guidance strategy proposed on a previous work is extended for the accomplishment of more complex flight missions. The trajectory is composed by subsequent targets or the concatenation of arcs of circumferences that compose the goal mission. The strategy seems to be robust to additive perturbations representing norm bounded uncertainties on the execution of the compound mission by the UAV. Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) is an FDA approved treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infections, and is being explored for other clinical applications, from alleviating digestive and neurological disorders, to priming the microbiome for cancer treatment, and restoring microbiomes impacted by cancer treatment. Quantifying the extent of engraftment following an FMT is important in determining if a recipient didn’t respond because the engrafted microbiome didn’t produce the desired outcomes (a successful FMT, but negative treatment outcome), or the microbiome didn’t engraft (an unsuccessful FMT and negative treatment outcome). The lack of a consistent methodology for quantifying FMT engraftment extent hinders the assessment of FMT success and its relation to clinical outcomes, and presents challenges for comparing FMT results and protocols across studies. Here we review 46 studies of FMT in humans and model organisms and group their approaches for assessing the extent to which an FMT engrafts into three criteria: 1) Chimeric Asymmetric Community Coalescence investigates microbiome shifts following FMT engraftment using methods such as alpha diversity comparisons, beta diversity comparisons, and microbiome source tracking. 2) Donated Microbiome Indicator Features tracks donated microbiome features (e.g., amplicon sequence variants or species of interest) as a signal of engraftment with methods such as differential abundance testing based on the current sample collection, or tracking changes in feature abundances that have been previously identified (e.g., from FMT or disease-relevant literature). 3) Temporal Stability examines how resistant post-FMT recipient’s microbiomes are to reverting back to their baseline microbiome. Individually, these criteria each highlight a critical aspect of microbiome engraftment;investigated together, however, they provide a clearer assessment of microbiome engraftment.
