Today's pluralistic and globalized society requires a global perspective in how we think, view ourselves, and relate to others to collaborate successfully with people with different cultural backgrounds. To support the development of a global perspective, universities cultivate international co-operations to enable international mobility for students, faculty, and staff. However, in-person mobility can be inhibited due to various reasons. To support a wider pool of students gaining international experience, modern digital mediated course formats can be used to offer virtual instead of in-person mobility. This contribution evaluates a digital mediated course for mechanical engineering students (Global engineering, GE) held in co-operation between an US and a Portuguese university, where internationally mixed student groups working on design projects in an Hyflex setting. Asides a literature driven discussion about the need for Global Engineers and a detailed description of the GE course, a longitudinal analysis was performed to assess the impact of the GE course on the students' development of a global perspective. The longitudinal analysis showed strong statistical support that the digitally mediated GE course improved the participating students' global perspective, assessed with the Global Perspective Inventory (GPI), tremendously. The observed improvements were in three of the six GPI dimensions comparable to an in-person semester abroad. Limitations of the study and future investigations are discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

Hypertension is a noncommunicable disease (NCD) that causes global concern, high costs and a high number of deaths. Internet of Things, Ubiquitous computing, and Cloud computing enable the development of systems for remote and real-time monitoring of patients affected with NCDs like hypertension. This paper reports on a system for monitoring hypertension patients that was built by employing these techniques. This system allows the vital signs of a patient (blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature) to be captured via sensors built in a wearable device similar to a wristwatch. These signals are transmitted to the patient's mobile device for processing, and the generated clinical data are sent to the cloud to be properly presented and analysed by the health professionals responsible for the patient. To deal with semantic interoperability issues that arise when multiple different devices and system components must interoperate, a semantic model was conceived for this system in terms of ontologies for diseases and devices. This paper also presents the semantic module that we developed and implemented in the cloud to perform reasoning based on this model, demonstrating the potential benefits of incorporating semantic technologies in our system. Internet of Things (IoT) industrial applications have increased in internet-connected devices. As a result, accessibility, scalability, connectivity, and adaptability have become major challenges. It is possible to create connections between loT devices over the wireless medium, but efficiently utilizing scarce spectrum is the biggest concern. The paper proposes a novel method for selecting sensing nodes with the goal of reducing energy usage and increasing sensing efficiency. In order to ensure that node trust values conform to each other without any ambiguity, cryptography encrypts all information that relates to a node in a central node (CN). Nodes participating in CSS are selected based on their performance. Based on a comparison of various algorithms using varying numbers of nodes, the proposed algorithm achieves a 10% sensing efficiency. © 2024 IEEE.

Nowadays, one of the challenges of communications systems is to enhance spectrum utilization and data rate without robustness loses. This situation is more perceptive in digital television applications, since there is a constant need of providing better experiences to the users with the transmission of higher resolution videos. In this context, novel approaches for the physical layer of such systems are subject of intense research, including investigation on the effect of replacing the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique currently used by other modulation schemes such as Filter Bank Multi Carrier (FBMC). This article presents a novel FBMC based frame implementation for the Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting Terrestrial Version B (ISDB-TB), developed as a software defined radio (SDR). The results show the robustness and rate gains of FBMC and prove that ISDB-TB frame can be modified to enhance the performance in Digital TV applications. © 2021 IEEE.

programming can help K-12 students to develop their 21st-century core skills. Despite the benefits, programming is not common to be delivered in Indonesian K-12 education. There is a need to understand potential challenges in introducing programming to K-12 students. We developed a questionnaire survey covering four identified dimensions of challenges: administrative, facilities, teachers, and students. We also asked about common programming assessments and their preferred software features for teaching programming. Forty K-12 teachers were invited to complete the survey. The responses were analyzed with thematic analysis using a bigram-based Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic modeling and descriptive statistics. Our study shows that the challenges include limited learning modules, an insufficient number of computers, limited programming skills, and limited computational thinking skills. Scratch was the most common programming language used and many programming assessments were about debugging a program or writing a small program. Visualization and animation can be helpful in teaching programming. © 2023 IEEE.

Real-time social interactions and multi-streaming are two critical features of live streaming services. In this paper, we formulate a new fundamental service query, Social-aware Diverse and Preferred Organization Query (SDSQ), that jointly selects a set of diverse and preferred live streaming channels and a group of socially tight viewers for organization of a live multi-streaming soiree. We prove that SDSQ is NP-hard and inapproximable within any factor, and design SDSSel, a 2-approximation algorithm with a guaranteed error bound. Moreover, we study SDSQ-T, a special case of SDSQ, where the social graph is a threshold graph, and propose TDSSel, a 2-approximation algorithm without any error to SDSQ-T. We propose two pruning strategies, PCP and CDP to boost SDSSel and TDSSel. We further propose a more challenging but practical service query, Generalized Social-aware Maximum Preferred and Diverse Query (GSPQ), a generalization of SDSQ. We design GPDSel, a 4-approximation algorithm for GSPQ with a guaranteed error bound. We propose a strategy to improve the approximation ratios of the proposed algorithms. A user study on Twitch validates SDSQ, and the large-scale experiments on real datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithms over several baselines for live-streaming services. © 2008-2012 IEEE.

Multipliers are essential for emerging technologies, as they are vital arithmetic circuits in many energy-efficient applications, such as digital signal processing and machine learning applications. Approximate multipliers (AxM) became an optimal option for applications in ASIC systems with error tolerance. This paper proposes to develop a run-time reconfigurable AxM with four approximation levels in a single circuit, evaluating accuracy and circuit metrics (e.g., circuit area, timing, and power consumption) based on the leading one-bit-based approximate (LoBA) multiplier. The results achieve a circuit area reduction of 52% less area and up to 27% less power consumption when compared with equivalent architecture based on LoBA state-of-art. Applying the proposed RLoBA to a normalized least mean square (NLMS) adaptive filter case study, we obtain 22.95% less power consumption using dynamic approximate level selection than the precise multiplier while maintaining the same accuracy level.

Approximate computing attempts to maximize area and energy savings for a trade-off between quality and efficiency. This paper investigates the approximate squarer and divider units in the calibration procedure for radio astronomy called StEFCal (Statistically Efficient and Fast Calibration). The StEFCal circuit uses two squarer units from the literature, i.e., radix-4 (AxRSU) and SquASH, and iterative-based Newton-Raphson (NR) and Goldschmid (GLD) dividers. We demonstrate the efficiency of StEFCal using the approximate arithmetic operators from the Pareto-optimal that show the area- and power-quality trade-off. The results show that using the AxRSU combined with the NR divider improves the Mean Square Error (MSE) by 4.24%, with 58x more energy saving than the state-of-the-art.

This paper presents MULTISTYLE, a multi-agent centralized heuristic search planner that incorporates distinct agent playstyles to generate solution plans where characters express individual preferences while cooperating to reach a goal. We include algorithmic details, an example domain, and multiple different solution plans generated with unique agent playstyle sets. We discuss our intent to incorporate this planner in a tool for game level designers to help them anticipate and understand how teams of players with distinct playstyles may play through their levels. Ultimately, MULTISTYLE generates solution plans with a novel and increased expressive range by attempting to satisfy sets of action and proposition preferences for each agent. Copy-move forgeries often exploit homogeneous regions in images with large-scale attacks to either highlight or conceal target objects. These manipulations are simple to execute but challenging to notice. Forgery detection techniques like Copy-Move Forgery Detection (CMFD) cannot detect these forged documents because they are unable to identify a sufficient number of effective keypoints in homogeneous areas, leading to inaccurate and inefficient results. SURF stands for Speeded-Up Robust Features and is used in this paper along with A-KAZE and Scale-Invariant Feature Transforms. According to our experiment, A-KAZE offers superior detection performance under diverse attacks, especially when it comes to large-scale attacks targeting homogeneous regions. A-KAZE is found to be more accurate than SIFT, SURF, and A-KAZE when applied to the NB-CASIA dataset, achieving detection accuracies of 89.2%, 93.9% and 98.98%.) © 2024 IEEE.
