The amount of data generated in different knowledge areas has made it necessary the use of data mining tools capable of automatically analyzing and extracting knowledge from datasets. Clustering is one of the most important tasks in data mining and can be defined as the process of partitioning objects into groups or clusters, such that objects in the same group are more similar to one another than to objects belonging to other groups. In this context, this paper aims to propose an adaptation of a bee-inspired optimization algorithm so that it is able to solve data clustering problems. The algorithm was run for different datasets and the results obtained showed high quality clusters and diversity of solutions, whilst a suitable number of clusters was automatically determined.

Complex flows involving waves and free-surfaces occur in several problems in hydrodynamics, such as fuel or water sloshing in tanks, waves breaking in ships, offshore platforms motions, wave action on harbors and coastal areas. The computation of such highly nonlinear flows is challenging since waves and free-surfaces commonly present merging, fragmentation and cusps, leading to the use of interface capturing Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approaches. In such methods the interface between the two fluids is captured by the use of a marking function that is transported in a flow field. In this work we simulate these problems with a 3D incompressible SUPG/PSPG parallel edge-based finite element flow solver associated to the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method. The hyperbolic equation for the transport of the marking function is also solved by a fully implicit parallel edge-based SUPG finite element formulation. Global mass conservation is enforced adding or removing mass proportionally to the absolute value of the normal velocity at the interface. All those techniques were successfully implemented in a computational code, which has been suitably used to carry out several studies. The performance and accuracy of the proposed solution method is tested in the simulation waves and in the interaction between waves and a semisubmersible structure. Results count on the establishment of a relaxation zone close to the domain outflow, which partially absorbs incoming waves, avoiding their reflection. Copyright © 2013 by ASME.

We created an online development environment, specifically for educational robotics applications, in which it is possible to register programming languages associated with different robotic platforms, so that the user program a robot using the registered language or the language R-Educ, developed for teaching programming. To validate the platform, we conducted a series of tests divided into six steps to verify that the complete cycle was satisfied - registering a language, program in R-Educ, compile to the registered language, compile to machine code and send the code for the robot.

The objective of this study was to compare and correlate the Portable Ultra Sound (US) measuring technique to the skinfold measuring technique (SF) to estimate body fat percentage (%F) in young adults. Sixty military were evaluated, all males, divided in two groups: Group 1 (normal) composed by 30 military with Body Mass Index (BMI) until 24.99 kg/m(2) and Group 2 (overweight) composed by 30 military with BMI > 25 kg/m(2). Weight, height, skinfolds and ultrasound were measured in 9 points (triceps, subscapular, biceps, chest, medium axillary, abdominal, suprailiac, thigh and calf). Body fat average values obtained by skinfold thickness and ultrasound measurements were 13.25 +/- 6.32 % and 12.73 +/- 5.95 % respectively. Despite significant differences in measurements of each anatomical site, it was possible to verify that the total final body fat percentage calculated by both techniques did not present significant differences and that overweight group presented greater similarity between the values obtained using caliper and ultrasound equipment.

The current state of the world economy has made Software-As-A-Service (SaaS) an appealing concept for organizations with a small budget for IT infrastructure investment. In a SaaS setup, companies subscribe software applications on a pay-per-use system from external service providers over the internet. However, these companies are looking for a decision framework that can be used to prioritize business software applications for SaaS migration. This paper attempts to fill in this gap by proposing a hybrid methodology which is composed of a total system life cycle (SLC) cost analysis for cost estimation and the analytic network process (ANP) for prioritization. Real test case data is used to validate the decision making capability of the framework. Sensitivity analysis was done to determine the robustness of the recommendations using Monte Carlo simulation. Results show that the proposed methodology could aid managers prioritizes software application projects for SaaS migration. © 2012 Newswood Limited. All rights reserved.

This study aimed to test a protocol of measurements based on Biophotogrammetry to Analysis of Respiratory Mechanics (BARM) in healthy children. Seventeen normal spirometric children (six male and 11 female) were tested. Their performed maneuvers of forced inspiratory vital capacity were recorded in the supine position. The images were acquired by a digital camera, laterally placed to the trunk. Surface markers allowed that the files, exported to CorelDraw (R) software, were processed by irregular trapezoids paths. Compartments were defined in the thoracic (TX), abdominal (AB) and the chest wall (CW). They were defined at the end of an inspiration and expiration, both maximum, controlled by a digital spirometer. The result showed that the measured areas at the inspiratory and expiratory periods were statistically different (p<0.05). It reflects the mobility of CW and compartments. In conclusion, the proposed method can identify the breathing pattern of the measured subject using images in two dimensions (2D).

This work addresses the development of a hybrid CPU-GPU local search heuristic for the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem. In this scheduling problem setup times are sequence-dependent and also machine-dependent. The objective is to minimize the maximum completion time of the schedule, known as make span. Since the problem belongs to the NP-hard class there is no known polynomial time algorithm to solve it, so metaheuristics and local search heuristics are usually developed to find good near optimal solutions. In general, the local search is the most expensive part of the heuristic method, so our algorithm harnesses the tremendous computing power of the GPU to decrease the local search computational time. We use the local search based on swapping jobs in different machines, since it is able find good near optimal solutions as we report from previous results in literature. We show that the hybrid CPU-GPU local search achieves average speedups from 10 to 27 times in relation to the pure CPU local search. © 2012 IEEE.

The creation of tools, techniques and methodologies to support the manipulation of large data sets has been receiving special attention of both scientific and industrial communities, in order to discover new ways of dealing with the underlying information, including learning purposes, identification of patterns, decision making support, amongst others. However, making use of computing resources to enhance awareness and understanding of software information and the software itself is still a challenge in software/systems engineering, since it involves the identification of suitable mechanisms, adequate abstractions, and studies on stimulation of the human perceptive and cognitive abilities. This paper presents some of the challenges in this context, based on current trends of software development lifecycle, program comprehension, and software engineering education. At the end, a special focus is given on ongoing research on using and improving current mechanisms for supporting software reuse practices and software comprehension in general. © 2012 IEEE.
