MicroRNAs, by regulating the expression of hundreds of target genes, play critical roles in developmental biology and the etiology of numerous diseases, including cancer. As vast amounts of microRNA expression profile data are now publicly available, the integration of those data sets with gene expression profiles represents an extremely active area of life science research. However, the ability to conduct genome wide microRNA-mRNA (gene) integration currently requires sophisticated, high-end informatics tools, significant expertise in bioinformatics and computer science to carry out the complex integration analysis. In addition, increased computing infrastructure capabilities are essential in order to accommodate large data sets. In this study, we have extending BioVLAB cloud workbench to develop an environment for the integrated analysis of microRNA and mRNA expression data, named BioVLAB-MMIA. The workbench facilitates computations on the Amazon EC2 and S3 resources orchestrated by XBaya Workflow Suite. The advantages of BioVLAB-MMIA over the web-based MMIA system include: 1) readily expanded as new computational tools become available; 2) easily modifiable by re-configuring graphic icons in the workflow; 3) on-demand cloud computing resources can be used on an as needed basis; 4) distributed orchestration supports complex and long running workflows asynchronously.

The idea of a Kripke semantics endowed with possibility/plausibility information is not new; in fact there are different approaches for that; see: [6], [13], [16], [19]. This paper follows the approach found in [6], but whereas [6] provides a fixed interpretation for connectives into [0,1] here we provide a characterization of a fuzzy semantics for connectives in such a way that the resulting fuzzy frames: K, T and D, are described precisely by the set of statements which also describes, respectively, the usual modal systems K, T and D.

Results are presented from a transfer effects study of a visuohaptic borescope simulator developed for non-destructive aircraft inspection training. The borescope simulator supports multi-point collision detection to effect haptic feedback as the virtual probe slides along and collides with rigid surfaces. Such probe maneuvering is shown to be a significant aspect of the inspection task that benefits from training, regardless of whether a real or virtual probe simulator is used to provide the training.

This paper describes a co-evolutionary algorithm for generating simple spatially oriented tactics and considers whether students can learn better by playing against co-evolved opponents or by playing against an expert system or other similar hard-coded opponent. Although a number of artificially intelligent tutoring and e-learning systems exist, our work looks at using co-evolution to generate competent opponents for human students to learn from. This paper describes and discusses early results on using computationally intelligent opponents for tactical training of human students. Initial results indicate that the learning environment for human players, measured by game difficulty and transfer of training, is comparable across co-evolved and hard-coded computer opponents. © 2010 IEEE.

Power consumption can be significantly reduced in Systems-on-Chip (SoC) by scaling down the voltage levels of the Processing Elements (PEs). The power efficiency of this Voltage Islanding technique comes at the cost of energy and area overhead due to the level shifters between voltage islands. Moreover, from the physical design perspective it is not desirable to have an excessive number of voltage islands on the chip. Considering voltage islanding at an early phase of design as during floorplanning of the PEs can address various of these issues. In this paper, we propose a new cost function for the floorplanning objective different from the traditional floorplanning objective. The new cost function not only includes the overall area requirement, but also incorporates the overall power consumption and the design constraint imposed on the maximum number of voltage islands. We propose a greedy heuristic based on the proposed cost function for the floorplanning of the PEs with several voltage islands. Experimental results using benchmark data study the effect of several parameters on the outcome of the heuristic. It is evident from the results that power consumption can be significantly reduced using our algorithm without significant area overhead. The area obtained from the heuristic is also compared with the optimal, and found to be within 4% of the optimal on average, when area minimization is given the priority.

Energy efficient mapping and voltage islanding for regular NoC under design constraints

Computational energy consumption of the processing elements (PEs) of a NoC can be significantly reduced by scaling down their voltage levels. This creates clusters of adjacent PEs operating at the same voltage level, known as voltage islands. Excessive number of voltage islands is undesirable from the physical design perspective and due to the overhead of level shifter energy consumption between adjacent voltage islands. Considering these issues during mapping of the PEs to the NoC routers, can potentially lead to acceptable solutions with reduced overall energy consumption. In this paper, we formulate the mapping problem as an optimisation problem. We present both optimal solution, obtained by solving a mixed integer linear program (MILP), and heuristic solution based on random greedy selection. Experimental results using benchmark and real applications show that the heuristic finds near-optimal solution in almost all cases in a very small fraction of the time required to achieve the optimal solution. Collaborating across disciplines can be a difficult task for a variety of reasons. One of which is the lack of common methodologies and tools for visualization and analysis. Tools developed in one group can rarely be applied directly to data from another group, due to differences in data formats, analysis methodologies, and learning curves associated with the advanced visualization systems necessary for modern scientific data. Despite these difficulties, multi-physics collaboration is key to developing and understanding the next generation of computational models, which couple the dynamic processes and scales of multiple disciplines. As a step towards integrative models, we propose a visualization and analysis system to serve as a common interconnect between chemical and nuclear engineering. This choice allows multiple organizations to fruitfully exchange data and example visualizations in a reproducible manner, providing a foundation for productive discussion. In this work, we demonstrate the utility of a visualization system as it applies to bridging simulation domains and providing for multidisciplinary research in nuclear and chemical engineering.

Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) and larger Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) constitute a powerful tool for the modern warfighter and first responder. However, every developing technology must first be tested before being exported to the battlefield or hot spot to assure predictable behaviors. In today's digital age, computers give designers and testers unprecedented ability to quickly and easily test virtual models before physical prototypes are created and field tested. We have utilized emerging Free Open Source Software (FOSS) simulators and workbenches (e.g. FlightGear and AUV Workbench) to improve mission-driven MAV/UAV video and imagery capture and analysis capabilities. In this project, use of FlightGear to analyze flight trajectories and video capture capabilities of different UAVs is presented. FlightGear allows the free implementation of changeable flight dynamic models, weather, autopilot, GPS, and multiplayer to be included in the analysis of simulated flights. Another attractive aspect of FlightGear is its extensible and easy-to-modify implementation. Modifications are accomplished by changing or adding human readable XML files in the FlightGear subdirectories. In this effort, existing aerial vehicle models are incorporated into FlightGear to create flight trajectories and analyze video capture capabilities to determine the necessary toolset for analyzing imagery data to meet the mission needs. The limitations of the existing camera systems as well as effects of various flight parameters on mosaicking and georegistration are presented here. Sample analysis of the effect of aerial vehicle speed on the overlap of frames captured at the typical 30 frames/second frame rate, which provides a base for comparison of flight attributes, are demonstrated together with other parameters that affect mission performance. © 2010 ASCE.

The transport of electrons in a semiconductor superlattice miniband under the influence of electrical and magnetic fields, which are applied in different directions on the superlattice, is investigated. The time series diagrams and the Lyapunov exponent are computed using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The numerical computations show that for particular values of the parameters, which depend on the superlattice characteristics and the fields applied on them, electrons show chaotic behaviors. In addition, for some other parameter values these behaviors become regular and non-chaotic. The presence of a magnetic field, perpendicular to the electrical field, is shown to reduce the chaotic areas in the motion of the electron. An alteration in electron average energy and velocity is attributed to application of the external fields, carrier scattering from other carriers, and the phonons’ and lattices’ faults. The study has important applications in computational physics and semiconductor chaotic simulations. © 2010 ***. All rights reserved.

The authors have implemented a nonlinear constitutive modeling for ionomer membranes with application in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. The constitutive model features multiplicative decomposition of visco-elastic and plastic deformation gradient tensors, micro-mechanism inspired viscous flow rule, nonlinear visco-elastic Bergström-Boyce model, and hydration and temperature dependent elastic modulus of ionomer membrane. In this work, the authors attempted to experimentally validate the constitutive model. Experimental results obtained from uniaxial tension tests of perfluorosulfonic acid membrane (e.g Nafion® from DuPont.) under well-controlled environments were used to fit the model parameters, which are subsequently used in a finite element (FEM) code to predict stress and deformation of ionomers in complex loading cases. The proposed model after validation showed fairly good predictive capabilities for the large deformation behavior of Nafion membrane subjected to the creep and relaxation at different strain rates in a wide range of relative humidity. © 2010 Society for Experimental Mechanics Inc.
