Ultrasound is garnering significant interest as an imaging modality for surgical guidance, due to its affordability, real-time temporal resolution and ease of integration into the operating room. Minimally-invasive intracardiac surgery performed on the beating-heart prevents direct vision of the surgical target, and procedures such as mitral valve replacement and atrial septal defect closure would benefit from intraoperative ultrasound imaging. We propose that placing 4D ultrasound within an augmented reality environment, along with a patient-specific cardiac model and virtual representations of tracked surgical tools, will create a visually intuitive platform with sufficient image information to safely and accurately repair tissue within the beating heart. However, the quality of the imaging parameters, spatial calibration, temporal calibration and ECG-gating must be well characterized before any 4D ultrasound system can be used clinically to guide the treatment of moving structures. In this paper, we describe a comprehensive accuracy assessment framework that can be used to evaluate the performance of 4D ultrasound systems while imaging moving targets. We image a dynamic phantom that is comprised of a simple robot and a tracked phantom to which point-source, distance and spherical objects of known construction can be attached. We also follow our protocol to evaluate 4D ultrasound images generated in real-time by reconstructing ECG-gated 2D ultrasound images acquired from a tracked multiplanar transesophageal probe. Likewise, our evaluation framework allows any type of 4D ultrasound to be quantitatively assessed. © 2009 SPIE.

Results are presented from empirical evaluation of a borescope simulator developed for non-destructive inspection training. Two experiments were conducted, manipulating camera rotation constraint and provision of haptic feedback. Performance of experienced borescope inspectors is measured in terms of speed and accuracy, with accuracy clearly shown to improve by placing constraints on the simulator's camera tip rotation and by providing haptic response. This is important as damage avoidance of a real borescope is a critical criterion of borescope inspection training. These are likely to be the first such experiments to have been conducted with aircraft engine inspectors evaluating the potential of haptics in borescope simulation.

During its first year of data taking, the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has collected a large sample of high-energy cosmic-ray electrons and positrons (CREs). We present the results of a directional analysis of the CRE events, in which we searched for a flux excess correlated with the direction of the Sun. Two different and complementary analysis approaches were implemented, and neither yielded evidence of a significant CRE flux excess from the Sun. We derive upper limits on the CRE flux from the Sun’s direction, and use these bounds to constrain two classes of dark matter models which predict a solar CRE flux: (1) models in which dark matter annihilates to CREs via a light intermediate state, and (2) inelastic dark matter models in which dark matter annihilates to CREs.

The first-year engineering courses at Clemson University involve various out-of-class requirements, such as departmental tours, exams, team projects, and presentations. Enrollment in the first semester course typically exceeds 850 students, and the number of students who can attend any single out-of-class event has physical and logistical limitations. Additionally, because these students are unfamiliar with course guidelines, procedures, and each other, straightforward communication tools are vital to their success. A web-based system, GEO (General engineering Online), was developed using PHP1 (a programming language used to dynamically generate web pages) and MySQL (a relational database management system). The system allows pre-registration for required out-of-class activities (department tours, advisor appointments, and team project work sessions). It also provides a portal for communication between students, instructors and advisors (peer evaluations, surveys, email confirmations of appointments, and student/team management). This study examines the capabilities of the GEO system from the viewpoint of students and faculty, as well as its pedagogical implications. The program and data structure are described, along with sample statistics generated by the system. Future directions include the development of GEOPort, an individual and team work documentation tool. This will transform GEO from a registration and communication tool into an education research tool. Team members will be able to post text, pictures, or video in response to instructor-posted materials, and to document their progress on projects and assignments. Rubrics can be developed to grade online submissions, and to track student approaches to design, problem-solving, and team dynamics. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Teaching engineering and technology subjects involves conveying understanding of abstract information structures and processes such as complex telecommunications protocols, complex mathematical concepts, and data structures. These are multidimensional and can be difficult to grasp quickly. Supported by a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Technology for Teaching grant, the School of engineering and Technology at National University has embarked on a project to enable students to grasp these complex concepts more quickly and easily, using continuous dialog among students and instructors as the structures are first introduced and then examined from multiple perspectives through real-time interaction among students, small groups, and instructors. HP Wireless Tablet PCs are used to discuss and experiment with diagrams and processes in realtime. This allows combining lectures and problem-solving sessions into a single class session. Our hypothesis is that: 1) an in-depth learning of theory is accomplished, and 2) student engagement is enhanced. Presentation of theory by the instructor is integrated with application while the theory is still in the student's short-term memory. Students no longer have to wait for a separate session such as a recitation session to apply the concepts. This approach often takes less time. In addition to accelerating the learning process, expert instructors find this approach more rewarding as students grasp new concepts more quickly. Analysis of data captured from both students and instructors are presented to support our hypotheses, and our results are compared with similar research carried out by other universities. In addition, the level of interaction enabled by the use of HP Tablets in on-line classes is discussed. The best teaching tools available in existing on-line teaching platforms are compared with the additional tools available in on-site courses when every student has a wireless Tablet PC and specific recommendations are made to on-line teachi

This paper examines the formation of self-organizing feature maps (SOFM) by the direct optimization of a cost function through a genetic algorithm (GA). The resulting SOFM is expected to produce simultaneously a topologically correct mapping between input and output spaces and a low quantization error. The proposed approach adopts a cost (fitness) function which is a weighted combination of indices that measure these two aspects of the map quality, specifically, the quantization error and the Pearson correlation coefficient between the corresponding distances in input and output spaces. The resulting maps are compared with those generated by the Kohonen's self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm in terms of the Quantization Error (QE), the Weighted Topological Error (WTE) and the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) indices. The experiments show the proposed approach produces better values of the quality indices as well as is more robust to outliers. © 2008 IEEE.

The primary objectives of this engineering project are (1) to examine how to develop students' problem solving and computational skills early in their program of study and (2) to further enhance these skills by building upon critical computing concepts semester after semester. The project is a component of NC State University's quality enhancement plan, which focuses on the use of technology in enhancing student learning. The project stems from new introductory computer-based modeling courses that were created in two engineering departments, and has expanded to include other departments. We give an overview of the project, provide an example of how a problem is modeled and broken apart, present some assessment results, and discuss the emerging lessons being learned. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

We show that edge stresses introduce intrinsic ripples in freestanding graphene sheets even in the absence of any thermal effects. Compressive edge stresses along zigzag and armchair edges of the sheet cause out-of-plane warping to attain several degenerate mode shapes. Based on elastic plate theory, we identify scaling laws for the amplitude and penetration depth of edge ripples as a function of wavelength. We also demonstrate that edge stresses can lead to twisting and scrolling of nanoribbons as seen in experiments. Our results underscore the importance of accounting for edge stresses in thermal theories and electronic structure calculations for freestanding graphene sheets.
