In this work we introduces the concept of interdimensional virtual environments and proposes to it creation an architecture based on the client-server model. Our architecture allows the users with different resources sharing the same environment in a transparent way, same that users are connected by a different graphical interfaces. This interdimensionality provides by the system is possible thanks to the use of a component in the serving side that if put in charge to carry through, when necessary, the transformation of the messages of a dimension for another one, removing or adding indispensable information to the different customers of the system

In this paper we present a Web Services-based approach to provide connections between optical domains. The architecture we describe here consists of a virtual topology service, an end-to-end connection service and an end-to-end interdomain negotiation service. All of them were implemented using the Web services technology. In this work we shortly introduce the architecture and focus mainly on the performance analysis. In order to validate our approach, a prototype that implements the services mentioned above has been developed and evaluated in terms of time, scalability and bandwidth consumption to establish end-to-end interdomain optical connections.

We propose a multimedia framework built on a flexible architecture designed for collaborative interaction of people and robots through the Web. Users can communicate to each other exchanging text, audio and video messages. Besides, it provides a flexible interface for people to interact with robots, for robots with people, and among robots themselves, for example, allowing a robot to communicate to another one. One or several users can communicate with one or more robots and also receive information from them. Robots can be remotely controlled through the use of keyboard, joysticks, data glove, and voice commands. Once the design of artificial neural networks (ANN) may require the optimization of numerical and structural parameters, bio-inspired algorithms have been successfully applied to accomplish this task, since they are population-based search strategies capable of dealing successfully with complex and large search spaces, avoiding local minima. In this paper, we propose the use of an artificial immune system for learning feedforward ANN's topologies. Besides the number of neurons in the hidden layer, the algorithm also optimizes the type of activation function for each node. The use of a Bayesian framework to infer the weights and weight decay terms as well as to perform model selection allows us to find neural models with high generalization capability and low complexity, once the Occam's razor principle is incorporated into the framework. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposal on seven classification problems and promising results were obtained.

In this paper, a new algorithm for function approximation is proposed to obtain better generalization performance and faster convergent rate. The new algorithm incorporates the architectural constraints from a priori information of the function approximation problem into Extreme Learning Machine. On one hand, according to Taylor theorem, the activation functions of the hidden neurons in this algorithm are polynomial functions. On the other hand, Extreme Learning Machine is adopted which analytically determines the output weights of single-hidden layer FNN. In theory, the new algorithm tends to provide the best generalization at extremely fast learning speed. Finally, several experimental results are given to verify the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed learning algorithm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

In this paper, an online signature verification scheme based on spectrum analysis and Mahalanobis decision is proposed. We firstly divided signatures to a number of frames with variable widths according to the characteristics of the time sequences, and then employed the fast Fourier transformation (FFT) to extract the spectrum of signatures. The distance between the Fourier coefficient within the corresponding frames is computed, and the Mahalanobis decision making is employed. Experimentation demonstrates that spectrum analysis based on windows with variable widths is effective for online signature signals

This paper proposes a supervised version of a learning algorithm for a constructive neuro-immune network. The proposed methodology is developed by taking ideas from the immune system and learning vector quantization. The resulting classification algorithm is characterized by high-performance, similar to the ones produced by alternative methods in the literature, and parsimonious solutions, with a much smaller set of prototypes per class when compared with the other approaches. The number of prototypes is automatically defined by the convergence criterion. The algorithm requires a single user-defined parameter for training, associated with the convergence criterion, and the computational cost is sufficiently reduced to support applications involving large data sets.

A cellular neural/nonlinear network (CNN) is any spatial arrangement of mainly locally coupled cells, where each cell is a dynamical system which has an input, an output and a state that evolves according to some prescribed dynamical laws. The goal of this tutorial is to provide participants with a snapshot of the current state of the art and research trends. Induction motors are nowadays used more frequently than any other electric motor in various kinds of electric drives. Incipient fault diagnosis is very important because if the fault is undetected, small motor failure can lead to serious motor failure. Although several sophisticated fault detection methods can be found in literature and practice, the focus of this paper are two methods that could be used "on-line" in real-life situations, and can be performed in a short time. The experiments have been performed by analyzing the voltage in an external search coil, and the shaft voltage. In the case of the search coil voltage analysis, the tests were performed for six different search coil positions. The search coil voltage spectral analysis has also been performed. All tests were performed on 22 kW, 380 V, 1470 r/min induction motor, for the case of a healthy rotor and for the case of a rotor with different deliberately damaged rotor. ©2005 IEEE.

The control of dynamical systems with inherent non-linear characteristics has motivated research in non-linear control theory. Two main approaches to dealing with uncertainties in control systems design are adaptive and robust control. In this paper, discrete direct adaptive control of unknown non-linear SISO systems is considered. The controller is implemented using a fuzzy neural network. The control concept is tested on a laboratory pilot plant and compared to a standard discrete FED Takahashi controller. © 2005 IEEE.
