For maximization of efficiency of interior permanent magnet generators (IPMSG) and optimization of machine control correct parameters of the machine are needed. Parameters used in advanced control of the machine are stator resistance, magnetic flux linkage and inductances of d and q axes. Alongside them ohmic resistance that represents core losses can be employed to further increase efficiency of control. This work will focus on implementation of MRAS estimator that has adaptive models with and without taking into account core losses. Using Matlab Simulink simulations were conducted and comparison of estimators was made under change of current in d and q axis and different values of resistance that represents core losses. Results show that value of resistance that represents core losses influences estimated values of parameters and that it is beneficial to take into account core losses for efficient control of the machine.

The K-SVD algorithm is a powerful tool in finding an adaptive dictionary for a set of signals via using the sparse representation optimization and constrained singular value decomposition. In this paper, we first review the original K-SVD algorithm as well as some sparse representation algorithms including OMP, Lasso and recently proposed IITH. Secondly, we embed the Lasso and IITH sparse representation algorithms into the K-SVD process and establish two new different K-SVD algorithms. Finally, we have done extensive experiments to evaluate the performances of these derived K-SVD algorithms with different pursuit methods and these experiments show that the K-SVD with IITH has distinctive advantages in computational cost and signal recovery performance while the K-SVD with Lasso is not sensitive to initial conditions.

Distributed Energy Resources (DER) are the basic units for storage and distribution in Microgrids. A DER unit can be of a hybrid type including a primary energy source (distributed generation - DG) and storage (distributed storage - DS). A hybrid type unit is proposed in this paper. The unit consists of a dc-dc buck-boost converter that tracks the maximum power supplied by a photovoltaic panel, a dc-dc boost converter that regulates the voltage of the microgrid dc bus and a bidirectional dc-dc buck-boost converter that controls the power flow in the unit, charging or discharging a battery bank. The control of these converters must consider the battery protection against voltage surges and transients, so as the protection of the loads connected to the dc bus, when the battery supplies the energy stored. The One-Cycle Control (OCC) technique has been used jointly the switching converters to allow fast response to transients, no overshoots and zero steady state error. The objective of this work is to use OCC technique in the controller of these converters in order to quickly track down the maximum power point, charge the battery bank when they are discharged, and to supply the battery energy to the loads when necessary, ensuring protection to the battery and to the loads connected to the microgrid.

In steerable filters, a filter of arbitrary orientation can be generated by a linear combination of a set of "basis filters." Steerable properties dominate the design of the traditional filters, e.g., Gabor filters and endow features the capability of handling spatial transformations. However, such properties have not yet been well explored in the deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs). In this paper, we develop a new deep model, namely, Gabor convolutional networks (GCNs or Gabor CNNs), with Gabor filters incorporated into DCNNs such that the robustness of learned features against the orientation and scale changes can be reinforced. By manipulating the basic element of DCNNs, i.e., the convolution operator, based on Gabor filters, GCNs can be easily implemented and are readily compatible with any popular deep learning architecture. We carry out extensive experiments to demonstrate the promising performance of our GCNs framework, and the results show its superiority in recognizing objects, especially when the scale and rotation changes take place frequently. Moreover, the proposed GCNs have much fewer network parameters to be learned and can effectively reduce the training complexity of the network, leading to a more compact deep learning model while still maintaining a high feature representation capacity. This paper presents a new time-effective GPS acquisition algorithm that improves the Time to First Fix (TTFF) of hardware GPS receivers under power consumption or hardware constraints. Based on a modified Serial Search Acquisition Algorithm (SA), this enhanced alternative, called Reduced Two Steps Acquisition (RTSA), provides an average gain of 64.18% in number of SA calculations. In terms of speedup RTSA was in average 3x faster than SA without needing additional hardware resources

This paper presents a non-uniform sampling analog-to-digital converter (ADC) architecture using an adaptive level-crossing technique. The architecture can be dynamically configured through three parameters that allow the user to match the ADC to the signal to be acquired or to application constraints. When applied to sparse signals, this architecture outperforms uniform sampling architectures. In the case of an Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, our architecture showed gains of up to 10 dB of signal to noise ratio (SNR) when considering the same number of samples of uniform sampling. When the same SNR is considered, our architecture allows reductions in excess of 50%. The architecture was implemented with FPGA and general purpose components, and showed a response time of about 200 μs, which could be further reduced in an integrated implementation.

The classification of heartbeats using electrocardiogram (ECG) aiming arrhythmia detection is a well researched subject and still there are room for improvements concerning the recommended databases. In this sense, aiming to classify heartbeats for arrhythmia detection, we extend a previous ours proposal that uses vectorcardiogram, a bi-dimensional representation of two ECG leads, by incorporating the time component producing a three-dimensional representation, the temporal vectorcardiogram. Along with the new representation, also we apply complex networks to extract features from the temporal VCG. The new proposed features feed then a Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier. The temporal VCG have increased in the global accuracy, and have better results classifying the N and S classes, when it is compared with the best result to our previous work with VCG. We conclude that new techniques to extract 3D features from the Temporal VCG could be an interesting research direction.

The decoy state protocol has been considered to be one of the most important methods to protect the security of quantum key distribution (QKD) with a weak coherent source. Here we test two experimental approaches to generating the decoy states with different intensities: modulation of the pump current of a semiconductor laser diode, and external modulation by an optical intensity modulator. The former approach shows a side-channel in the time domain that allows an attacker to distinguish s signal state from a decoy state, breaking a basic assumption in the protocol. We model a photon-number-splitting attack based on our experimental data, and show that it compromises the system's security. Then, based on the work of K. Tamaki et al. [New J. Phys. 18, 065008 (2016)], we obtain two analytical formulas to estimate the yield and error rate of single-photon pulses when the signal and decoy states are distinguishable. The distinguishability reduces the secure key rate below that of a perfect decoy-state protocol. To mitigate this reduction, we propose to calibrate the transmittance of the receiver (Bob's) unit. This paper presents a control method for constrained control of a permanent magnet synchronous machine. The control system utilizes field oriented PI current control tuned using linear control theory to obtain good steady-state performance and a fast transient response. However, the linear control theory does not consider constraints, violation of which may lead to performance deterioration and even instability. In order to ensure constraint satisfaction an additional device called a reference governor is added to the existing control loop. The main advantage of such add-on device is in its simplicity and its low computational burden which enables real time implementation. The real time feasibility of the proposed method is shown using a processor-in-the loop simulation implemented on Texas Instruments F28335 150 MHz microcontroller.

Mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs), a special class of WSN in which one or more elements of the network is mobile, has been extensively studied over the past 15 years. In MWSNs, mobility plays an important role in improving the performance of the network in terms of connectivity, lifetime, and data collection. We exploit controlled mobility to develop a smart data collection scheme in MWSNs. We consider a sensor network where static nodes are deployed and organized into clusters on the basis of distance from each other. These nodes sense their environment and transmit data to their corresponding cluster heads, which in turn send it to a mobile data collector (MDC) when it is in communication range. In this paper, we first show the factors affecting the data collection process of MDC in such an environment. We then present an adaptive algorithm and control parameters that the MDC uses for autonomously controlling its motion. These parameters allow the speed of the MDC to be adjusted at run time in order to adaptively improve the data collection process. Built-in intelligence helps our system adapting to the changing requirements of data collection. Our scheme shows significant advantages for sparsely deployed, large scale sensor networks and heterogeneous networks (where sensors have variable sampling rates). The simulation results show a significant increase in data collection rate and reduction in the overall time and number of laps that the MDC spends for data gathering.
