Emotionally annotated databases are repositories of multimedia documents with annotated affective content that elicit emotional responses in exposed human subjects. They are primarily used in research of human emotions, attention and development of stress-related mental disorders. This can be successfully exploited in larger processes like selection, evaluation and training of personnel for occupations involving high stress levels. Emotionally annotated databases are also used in multimodal affective user interfaces to facilitate richer and more intuitive human-computer interaction. Multimedia documents in emotionally annotated databases must have maximum personal ego relevance to be the most effective in all these applications. For this reason flexible construction of subject-specific of emotionally annotated databases is imperative. But current construction process is lengthy and labor intensive because it inherently includes an elaborate tagging experiment involving a team of human experts. This is unacceptable since the creation of new databases or modification of the existing ones becomes slow and difficult. We identify a positive correlation between the affect and semantics in the existing emotionally annotated databases and propose to exploit this feature with an interactive relevance feedback for a more efficient construction of emotionally annotated databases. Automatic estimation of affective annotations from existing semantics enhanced with information refinement processes may lead to an efficient construction of high-quality emotionally annotated databases. © 2012 MIPRO.

We created an online development environment, specifically for educational robotics applications, in which it is possible to register programming languages associated with different robotic platforms, so that the user program a robot using the registered language or the language R-Educ, developed for teaching programming. To validate the platform, we conducted a series of tests divided into six steps to verify that the complete cycle was satisfied - registering a language, program in R-Educ, compile to the registered language, compile to machine code and send the code for the robot.

Electrochemical dual layer capacitors, also known by their market names Supercapacitors and Ultracapacitors are perspective technology for many uses, for instance in power saving circuits for electric propulsion systems, short-term energy storage systems, systems for extending battery lifetime and other similar uses. Although they can be used connected directly to a power converter DC link, in most cases they are connected to the DC link through a separate power converter. In use, such an EDLC and power converter assembly, due to EDLC specifics, must reliably operate in numerous operating points, unlike a typical power electronic converter. Such a power converter operation entails many control issues. Some of them are considered in this paper. © 2012 MIPRO.

This paper presents a general approach to the optimized design of a series of interior permanent magnet motors with the same lamination cross section. A concept of a referent and particular design has been introduced and analytical expressions which relate the principal machine parameters for the referent and particular machine have been derived. The referent design can be optimized according to a certain criterion which automatically yields the optimal design of the entire series. The particular designs are then obtained from the referent design by varying the stack length, the number of turns per coil and the number of parallel circuits. In order to demonstrate the correctness of the derived design principles the optimized design of a referent machine with IEC frame size 160 has been made by combining the finite-element method and Differential Evolution optimization algorithm from which five particular designs with power ratings ranging from 15 kW to 110 kW have been derived. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper investigates the processing of surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals collected from the forearm of a human subject and, based on which, a control strategy is developed for an exoskeleton arm. In this study, we map the motion of elbow and wrist to the corresponding joints of an exoskeleton arm. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) based classifiers are introduced as the indicator of the motion type of the joints, and then with the force of corresponding agonist muscles the control signal is produced. In the strategy, which is different from the conventional method, we assign one classifier for each joint, decomposing the motion of the two joints into independent parts, making the recognition of the forearm motion a combination of the results of different joints. In addition, training time is reduced and recognition of motion is simplified. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Radial Basis Function (RBF) has been used in surface reconstruction methods to interpolate or approximate scattered data points, which involves solving a large linear system. The linear systems for determining coefficients of RBF may be ill-conditioned when processing a large point set, which leads to unstable numerical results. We introduce a quasi-interpolation framework based on compactly supported RBF to solve this problem. In this framework, implicit surfaces can be reconstructed without solving a large linear system. With the help of an adaptive space partitioning technique, our approach is robust and can successfully reconstruct surfaces on non-uniform and noisy point sets. Moreover, as the computation of quasi-interpolation is localized, it can be easily parallelized on multi-core CPUs. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Adaptive control of a robot manipulator with a passive joint (which has neither an actuator nor a holding brake) is investigated. With the aim to shape the controlled manipulator dynamics to be of minimized motion tracking errors and joint accelerations, we employ a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) optimization technique to obtain an optimal reference model. Adaptive neural network (NN) control has been developed to ensure the reference model can be matched in finite time, in the presence of various uncertainties. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Swarm robotic concept has become a topic of extensive research in hazardous environments where fault tolerant, robust and energy-efficient approach is needed. In this paper we present behavioural based algorithm for outdoor environment exploration. This work is inspired by ant colony behaviour models. Our goal is to control agent's motion using simple rules and not to rely on wireless communication. Agents perform random walk combined with simple heuristic pheromone based rules which prevent frequent visits of previously visited locations. To determine heuristic parameters which maximize area coverage, we optimize parameters by simulating swarm behaviour in Matlab. Furthermore, we take into account the agent limitations, such as battery lifetime, and we model a probability success of a mission with respect to that parameter.

Underlying link-layer protocols of wireless networks use the conventional "store and forward" design paradigm cannot provide highly sustainable reliability and stability in wireless communication, which introduce significant barriers and setbacks in scalability and deployments of wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a Code Embedded Distributed Adaptive and Reliable (CEDAR) link-layer framework that targets low latency and high throughput. CEDAR is the first comprehensive theoretical framework for analyzing and designing distributed and adaptive error recovery for wireless networks. It employs a theoretically-sound framework for embedding channel codes in each packet and performs the error correcting process in selected intermediate nodes in packet's route. To identify the intermediate nodes for the en/decoding for minimizing average packet latency, we mathematically analyze the average packet delay, using Finite State Markovian Channel model and priority queuing model, and then formalize the problem as a non-linear integer programming problem. Also, we propose a scalable and distributed scheme to solve this problem. The results from real-world testbed "NESTbed" and simulation with Matlab prove that CEDAR is superior to the schemes using hop-by-hop decoding and destination-decoding not only in packet delay but also in throughput. In addition, the simulation results show that CEDAR can achieve the optimal performance in most cases.
