In this work we have composed an innovative environment for the development of interactive TV applications. This has been evaluated in the context of laboratory exercises by students. We present the environment as well as the results gained when the students changed their role from passive TV viewers to application developers. © 2012 IEEE.

When packets are transmitted over braided-paths in visual sensor networks some intermediate nodes may relay most part of the traffic, turning part or the entire network inactive when they run out of energy. Due to the nature of visual monitoring, source nodes may have different relevancies for the application, according to the desired monitoring tasks and the current sensors' poses and fields of view. Based on such relevancies, packets transmitted from different source nodes will have different relaying priorities, which are associated with energy thresholds. We propose an energy-efficient relay scheme where packets are forwarded to the next hop toward the sink only if the associated energy threshold is below the current energy level of the relaying node. Doing so, energy saving is achieved potentially prolonging the network lifetime, but with reduced impact to the overall monitoring quality of the application. © 2012 IEEE.

Camera-enabled sensor nodes deployed for visual monitoring can considerably enlarge the applicability of wireless sensor networks. Due to the stringent requirements of visual data transmission and processing, when compared with scalar wireless sensor networks, quality assessment becomes a relevant issue. Although academic investigation has been focused on QoS parameters such as end-to-end delay, throughput and packet error rate, what is being seen by source nodes may be more important for the application than the quality of received data. In such way, we propose the novel concept of Quality of Viewing (QoV) to be employed as an important QoS parameter when assessing the monitoring quality in visual sensor networks. Some issues for the establishment of the QoV of monitoring applications will be presented, as well as practical exploitation of this parameter for dynamic verification, control and management of wireless sensor networks composed of camera-enabled source nodes. © 2012 IEEE.

Wireless sensor networks composed of camera-enabled source nodes can provide visual information of an area of interest, potentially enriching monitoring applications. While few bytes can represent scalar data, even low-resolution still images may require thousand of bytes, turning data fragmentation into a relevant design issue. Different optimization approaches have been proposed in recent years to achieve energy saving in wireless image sensor networks. However, the impact of image fragmentation upon the adopted MAC technology has been neglected in most cases. In this work we investigate the effect of frame size on image transmissions over wireless sensor networks, linking the maximum frame size, the useful payload and the frame error rate effects. Additionally, we discuss different approaches for transmissions of DWT-based encoded images and the impact of inserting application-specific information into the frame header. We believe that our discussions can contribute to the advance of the design of wireless image sensor networks. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper addresses some of the problems related to direct surface temperature measurement of a salient pole synchronous generator excitation winding in rotation. Excitation winding temperature is used for determining the dynamic limit in a PQ diagram. The paper also addresses procedures of improving the accuracy of surface temperature measurement using the contact DS 18B20 digital temperature probes. The paper also provides experimental results of direct temperature measurement of the excitation winding surface conducted in the salient pole synchronous generator in the rotation.

This paper investigates the problem of stability for a class of linear uncertain Markovian jump systems over networks via the delta operator approach. The sensor-to-controller random network-induced delay and arbitrary packet losses are considered for mode-dependent time delays. That is, a Markov process is used to model the time-varying delays which are dependent on the system mode. Based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional in the delta domain, a new sufficient condition for the solvability of the stability problem is presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the techniques developed. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011.

Whenever reliable transmissions are assured by retransmission mechanisms, higher packet error incur in additional energy consumption due to packet retransmissions, even though many monitoring applications can tolerate some loss in the quality of the received images. In fact, visual information retrieved from source nodes may have different relevancies for the applications, according to the desired monitoring tasks and the current sensors' poses and fields of view. We propose a semi-reliable energy-efficient hop-by-hop retransmission mechanism, where the reliability level of each packet is function of the relevance of the source nodes associated with DWT subbands. Doing so, some of the corrupted packets will not be retransmitted, saving energy of intermediate nodes with low impact to the visual monitoring quality. © 2012 IEEE.

The techniques of multi-agent system bring intelligence and flexibility to embedded agent/multi-agent embedded system connected to internet presents a great advantage. Advantage of such multi-agent systems improves the use of expanded infrastructure. Installing simplified agents in embedded systems was shown necessary due to increasing use of embedded devices. Multi-agent power management system is based on battery control and anticipation of replacement. Wireless transmission of ECG (electrocardiogram) signal via ZigBee (XBee modules) brings some problem into focus. This paper presents concept realized and tested on real equipment. Using smart mobile phone (today a widely used device) interaction/actoric between end user embedded agent and embedded master agent can give feedback about end users health in real-time. Similar, off-line monitoring device exists, but not connected to the network (Holter). Monitoring of patients in real-time can be enabled by such device that exhibits wireless communication and allows transmission of real-time source signal. The agent on which this paper refers to is program/firmware function in program code in small embedded system for monitoring ECG signal. Simplified agent activates the watchdog for battery alert. Main focus is to control the power consumption of WSN (Wireless Sensor Node). Power management has the intelligence middleware and allows timely to respond and inform the end users. Artificial intelligence is integrated in master agent that is element of embedded system cloud and a primal high level layer. Secondary layer is integrated in dedicated servers which respond to device clouds. LabVIEW application for signal processing provides robust and efficient environment for resolving ECG signal processing problem. These tool/application can be also used in other biomedical signal processing applications such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Electroencephalography (EEG). © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The main idea behind this project is to provide a unified platform which will cover a complete process for embedded systems learning. A modular approach is considered for skills practice through supporting individualization in learning. This platform shall facilitate a novel development of universal approach in creative learning environment and knowledge management that encourage use of ICT. New learning model is challenging the education of engineers in embedded systems design through real-time experiments that stimulate curiosity with ultimate goal to support students to understand and construct their personal conceptual knowledge based on experiments. In addition to the technological approach, the use of cognitive theories on how people learn will help students to achieve a stronger and smarter adaptation of the subject. Applied methodology will be evaluated from the scientific point of view in parallel with the implementation in order to feedback results to the R&D.

A wide range of the database systems in use today are based on the relational model. As a consequence, more information used by those systems has been stored in multi relational object types. However, most of the traditional machine learning algorithms have not been originally proposed to handle this type of data. Aiming to propose better ways of handling the relational particularities of the data, this paper proposes a new relational clustering method based on relationship and attribute information. In our method, attributes have weights associated with their importance between the object types. An empirical analysis is performed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, comparing with two traditional methods for relational clustering. Three relational databases were used in the experiments. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
