We propose a novel and fast interactive segmentation methodology for computer vision applications. Basically, the proposed system performs the tracking of seeds so that multiple seeds can be acquired over time, substantially improving the segmentation results. Moreover, instead of image coordinates, the user indicates points in the real-world that become seeds in the image. These seeds can be indicated, for example using a laser pointer or a smart-phone. The seeds can then be tracked and used by a segmentation algorithm. Experiments using the Lucas-Kanade Optical Flow and the Fast Multi-Object Fuzzy Segmentation (Fast-MOFS) algorithm demonstrate that the proposed technique successfully segments images in real-time and improves the user ability to directly segment an object in the real world. The proposed system has a high performance, allowing it to be used with high frame rates in devices with low processing capability and/or with restricted power requirements.

The model of rotational mechanical system is laboratory model intended to emulate a flexible joint on a robot or spacecraft and is also useful in the study of vibration analysis and resonance. This system is similar in nature to the control problems encountered in large geared robot joints where flexibility is exhibited in the gearbox. The aim of this paper is to design such mechatronic system with considerable elasticity, for educational purposes, using computer aided design (CAD). Emotionally annotated databases are repositories of multimedia documents with annotated affective content that elicit emotional responses in exposed human subjects. They are primarily used in research of human emotions, attention and development of stress-related mental disorders. This can be successfully exploited in larger processes like selection, evaluation and training of personnel for occupations involving high stress levels. Emotionally annotated databases are also used in multimodal affective user interfaces to facilitate richer and more intuitive human-computer interaction. Multimedia documents in emotionally annotated databases must have maximum personal ego relevance to be the most effective in all these applications. For this reason flexible construction of subject-specific of emotionally annotated databases is imperative. But current construction process is lengthy and labor intensive because it inherently includes an elaborate tagging experiment involving a team of human experts. This is unacceptable since the creation of new databases or modification of the existing ones becomes slow and difficult. We identify a positive correlation between the affect and semantics in the existing emotionally annotated databases and propose to exploit this feature with an interactive relevance feedback for a more efficient construction of emotionally annotated databases. Automatic estimation of affective annotations from existing semantics enhanced with information refinement processes may lead to an efficient construction of high-quality emotionally annotated databases.

The availability of a hydropower plant is very important. During the last few decades intermittent operation has increased, and power plants designed for base electrical energy production became the ones that cover peak power needs. This lead to greater strains on the stator package. Power generators are often very robust and can endure these new operating conditions but sometimes with reduced lifetime of stator package. Often, the main problem is a generator's cooling system. Older synchronous generators often have cooling system control with very rough steps. This paper describes such a generator, its problems and presents a possible solution for cooling system control.

This paper presents a general approach to the optimized design of a series of interior permanent magnet motors with the same lamination cross section. A concept of a referent and particular design has been introduced and analytical expressions which relate the principal machine parameters for the referent and particular machine have been derived. The referent design can be optimized according to a certain criterion which automatically yields the optimal design of the entire series. The particular designs are then obtained from the referent design by varying the stack length, the number of turns per coil and the number of parallel circuits. In order to demonstrate the correctness of the derived design principles the optimized design of a referent machine with IEC frame size 160 has been made by combining the finite-element method and Differential Evolution optimization algorithm from which five particular designs with power ratings ranging from 15 kW to 110 kW have been derived.

This study aimed to test a protocol of measurements based on Biophotogrammetry to Analysis of Respiratory Mechanics (BARM) in healthy children. Seventeen normal spirometric children (six male and 11 female) were tested. Their performed maneuvers of forced inspiratory vital capacity were recorded in the supine position. The images were acquired by a digital camera, laterally placed to the trunk. Surface markers allowed that the files, exported to CorelDraw (R) software, were processed by irregular trapezoids paths. Compartments were defined in the thoracic (TX), abdominal (AB) and the chest wall (CW). They were defined at the end of an inspiration and expiration, both maximum, controlled by a digital spirometer. The result showed that the measured areas at the inspiratory and expiratory periods were statistically different (p<0.05). It reflects the mobility of CW and compartments. In conclusion, the proposed method can identify the breathing pattern of the measured subject using images in two dimensions (2D).

In this paper, a neural network PCA method that integrates neural networks (NN) and principal component analysis (PCA) is used to detect faults in a wastewater treatment plant. The neural networks are used to calculate a non-linear and dynamic model of the process in normal operating conditions. PCA is used to generate monitoring charts based on the residuals calculated as the difference between the process measurements and the output of the networks. It can evaluate the current performance of the process and detects the faults. This technique has been applied to the simulation of a benchmark of a biological wastewater treatment process, a highly non-linear process. The simulation results clearly show the advantages of using this NNPCA monitoring in comparison with classical PCA monitoring.

The lower Sg. Piah hydro-electric station is a river run-off hydro scheme with generators capable of generating 55MW of electricity. It is located 30km away from Sg. Siput, a small town in the state of Perak, Malaysia. The station has two turbines (Pelton) to harness energy from water that flow through a 7km tunnel from a small intake dam. The trait of a run-off river hydro station is small-reservoir that cannot store water for a long duration; therefore potential energy carried by the spillage will be wasted if the dam level is not appropriately regulated. To improve the station annual energy output, a new controller based on the computed river flow has been installed. The controller regulates the dam level with an algorithm based on the river flow derived indirectly from the intake-dam water level and other plant parameters. The controller has been able to maintain the dam at optimum water level and regulate the turbines to maximize the total generation output.
