This work presents an automatic classification system for power quality disturbances based on specialized neural networks. The proposed system is capable to classify multiple disturbances, which is very important in some power systems scenarios. A system was designed and tested with synthetic signals generated by software and the global efficiency achieved was 98.9%. The system was also evaluated with real data achieving good results.

This application paper presents an intelligent system for alarm processing and fault location in power substations. A hybrid model is constructed using rule-based systems and an artificial neural network. Incoming alarms are initially handled by an input expert module, responsible for presenting selected input information to an artificial neural network. This network processes the alarm information and provides classifications that will be further processed by an output expert module, which is responsible for obtaining final diagnoses that will be presented to the substation operator. The concept of typical substation is presented and discussed. The alarm processing automation obtained with the proposed model enhances the reliability and quickness of power system operators' decision making. Simulation results using data from a real substation show that the proposed model presents excellent performance under many different situations.

Counting all common subsequences (ACS) was proposed as a similarity measurement, which is conceptually different from the sequence kernel (SK) in that ACS only considers the occurrence of subsequences while SK uses the frequency of occurrences of subsequences. This difference evidently results in significant performance variety. ACS has been very competitive in the kNN classifier, however, its performance with kernel machine has been rarely investigated. This is due to the fact that whether ACS is suitable for a kernel classifier is not clear. To this end, this paper firstly proves that ACS is a valid kernel, with a delicate analysis. Then, ACS is further proved to be a good kernel with a comparison with SK in the support vector machine.

A semi-reference image quality assessment metric based on similarity measurement for synthesized virtual viewpoint image (VVI) in free-viewpoint television system (FFV) is proposed in this paper. The key point of the proposed metric is taking resemblant information between VVI and its neighbor view images for quality assessment to make our metric to be extended to multi-semi-reference image quality assessment easily. The proposed metric first extracts impact factors from image features, then combines an image synthesis technique and similarity functions, in which, disparity information are taken into account for registering the resemblant regions. Experiments are divided into three phases. Phase I is to verify the validation of the proposed metric by taking impaired images and original reference into account. The experimental results show the agreement between evaluation scores and bio-characteristic of human visual system. Phase II shows the accordance with Phase I by taking neighbor view as reference. The proposed metric can be taken as a full reference one to evaluate the image quality even though the original reference is absent. Phase III is then performed to evaluate the quality of WI. Evaluation scores in the experimental results are able to evaluate the quality of VVI.

In this paper the inclusion of some classical measures for disturbance rejection [4] in a general procedure for tuning multivariable model predictive controllers (MPC) with constraints is presented. These measures are stated as l 1 norms of the system transfer functions, providing a framework for different sets of disturbances. The case of asymmetrical bounded signals (disturbances, inputs) is also studied and included in the procedure. The methodology has been applied to tune an MPC for the activated sludge process in a simulated wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The problem is stated as a non linear programming problem with constraints over the system norms. The mathematical optimization for tuning all controller parameters is tackled in two iterative steps due to the existence of integer and real numbers (horizons and weights).
