To explore the association relations among disease, pathogenesis, physician, symptoms and drug, we adapt a variational Apriori algorithm for discovering association rules on a dataset of the Qing Court Medical Records. There are five types of semantic associations we intend to discover, including Disease-Pathogenesis-Drug set(DPaD), Disease-Symptoms-Drug set (DSyD), Disease-Drug set (DD), Disease-Physician-Drug set (DPhD) and Disease-Drug Category Set (DDC). To solve the synonymity problem and the data sparseness problem, we give a mapping strategy which maps pathogenesis to standardized forms and maps drugs to drug categories. With the mapping strategy the number of frequent drug sets rises from 287 to 1184. The experimental results indicate that our method with the mapping strategy is an effective way to acquire valuable semantic association rules. © 2012 IEEE.

When user uploads a video clip to the video sharing websites, a video thumbnail needs to be generated as the cover to represent the video content. In this paper, a novel video thumbnail generation framework is presented. For generating a good thumbnail, three criteria are considered: (1) the thumbnail should be distinct, in order to make user feel more pleasant;(2) the thumbnail should be easily accessed by human vision, especially for the small-scale thumbnails in the web, in order to make user understand the content of the whole video at a glance;(3) the thumbnail should reflect the main content of the video. In this paper, firstly the source video is segmented into shots. Secondly, a high quality key-frame is extracted from each shot based on image quality assessment. Thirdly, visual saliency analysis is adopted to get the accessibility value of each key frame and the visual similarity analysis is employed to obtain the representativeness value of the key-frames. Finally, a linear fusing scheme is explored to fuse these two values and find the best key-frame as the video thumbnail. By using the proposed framework, we attempt to generate accessible thumbnail which may improve the viewing experience of visitors and enhance their desire to watch the video. Experiments are conducted on the videos selected from the websites and the results show that the proposed method is effective. © 2012 IEEE.

Tumor-associated macrophages （TAMs） play a critical role in melanoma growth and metastasis. Infiltration of TAMs correlates with the poor prognosis of melanoma. TAMs are differentiated from monocytes in response to the tumor microenvironment cue. However, the mechanism how TAMs adapt to the tumor microenvironment after differentiation from monocytes is not fully understood. In addition, specific identification of TAMs in melanoma is difficult because the expression of the most commonly used macrophage marker, CD68, is also expressed in melanoma cells. In an earlier study, we found by gene microarray analysis that seven members of the metallothionein （MTs） family were upregulated in melanoma-conditioned medium induced macrophages （MCIM-MO）. MTs have been implicated in zinc metabolism and inflammation. In the present study, we confirmed that expression of metallothionein is induced in M-CSF differentiated macrophages （M-CSF/M~） and MCIM-M~ at both the mRNA and protein levels using real-time PCR, immunofluorescence, and western blot analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrated the presence of metallothionein in melanoma tissues in vivo and that metallothionein was co-localized with TAMs markers, CD68 and CD163. Finally, we demonstrated the induction of the zinc importer gene Zip8 both in M-CSF/MO and MCIM-MO. Our study identifies metallothionein as a novel marker for TAMs and suggests that metaliothionein might play important roles in macrophage adaptation and function in the tumor microenvironment.

Accordingly with the World Health Organization, heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases, cancer and diabetes are the most common chronic diseases and one of the leading causes of the mortality in the world. In such cases we need more than patient engagement to help to control of the disease, community and health organizations support is also desirable. These roles must support the patients' self-management activities, making them feel confident and motivated. This support can be accomplished by ubiquitous computing. The ubiquitous computing gives conditions to help chronic diseases patients in the management of their activities, offering support to them anytime, anywhere. In this context, this article presents U'Ductor, a model for supporting ubiquitous chronic care management, whose goal is to help the integration between patient and community resources. The U'Ductor gives a step forward in relation to the studied related works by integrating patients, community resources and community members. Those features were not completely explored in the studied works in the way we employ in U'Ductor. An implementation of the model was evaluated by a chronic patient, which gave a positive feedback about it.

We introduce a novel approach for automatically generating a virtual instructor from textual input only. Our fully implemented system first analyzes the rhetorical structure of the input text and then creates various question-answer pairs using patterns. These patterns have been derived from correlations found between rhetorical structure of monologue texts and question-answer pairs in the corresponding dialogues. A selection of the candidate pairs is verbalized into a diverse collection of question-answer pairs. Finally the system compiles the collection of question-answer pairs into scripts for a virtual instructor. Our end-to-end system presents questions in pre-fixed order and the agent answers them. Our system was evaluated with a group of twenty-four subjects. The evaluation was conducted using three informed consent documents of clinical trials from the domain of colon cancer. Each of the documents was explained by a virtual instructor using 1) text, 2) text and agent monologue, and 3) text and agent performing question-answering. Results show that an agent explaining an informed consent document did not provide significantly better comprehension scores, but did score higher on satisfaction, compared to two control conditions. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Method for improving MapReduce performance by prefetching before scheduling

In this paper, a prefetching technique is proposed to solve the performance problem caused by remote data access delay. In the technique, the map tasks which will cause the delay are predicted first and then the input data of these tasks will be preloaded before the tasks are scheduled. During the execution, the input data can be read from local nodes. Therefore, the delay can be hidden. The technique has been implemented in Hadoop-0. 20.1. The experiment results have shown that the technique reduces map tasks causing delay, and improves the performance of Hadoop MapRe- duce by 20%.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) based content distribution systems have emerged as the main form for content distribution on the Internet,which can greatly reduce the distribution cost of content providers and improve the overall system ***,the mismatch between the overlay and underlay networks causes large volume of redundant traffic,which intensifies the tension between P2P content providers and ***,how to efficiently use network resources to reduce the traffic burden on the ISPs is crucial for the sustainable development of P2P *** paper surveys the state-of-art P2P traffic optimization technologies from three perspectives:P2P cache,locality-awareness and data *** details,comparison between these technologies and their applicabilities are presented,followed by a discussion of the issues that remain to be addressed and the direction of future content distribution research.

The continuous shrinking of devices has introduced new challenges to integrated circuit design, mainly to deal with the parametric variations in process parameters. This paper presents an evaluation of the process variability on the current Ids of nanotechnologies devices, individually and simultaneously, taking into account the correlation among them. The results show that the deviation from mean value is quite significant ≈ 16% for high performance models. The variation of L has the dominant effect on the overall variation of the device in high performance models while the dominant effect on the overall variation of the device in low power models still being due to Vth variations. Lastly, the effect of process parameter variations deteriorates with technology scaling, with a considerable increase in the deviation from the 22nm to 16nm technology.

In recent years, such SNS services as Facebook, Google+, and Twitter have become very popular. In such services, many sources of information are posted and shared, although user rankings are hardly considered. In this paper, we consider for web pages an evaluation technique, such as HITS and PageRank, for SNS user evaluation applications and propose an algorithm using a user's real distance. We consider various parameters, including user distance, favorites, and the numbers of friends in SNSs in our evaluation technique. We propose a new reputation network to measure the reliability of SNS information.

Regular expression (RegEx) matching has been widely used in various networking and security applications. Despite much effort on this important problem, it remains a fundamentally difficult problem. DFA-based solutions can achieve high throughput, but require too much memory to be executed in high speed SRAM. NFA-based solutions require small memory, but are too slow. In this paper, we propose RegexFilter, a prefiltering approach. The basic idea is to generate the RegEx print of RegEx set and use it to prefilter out most unmatched items. There are two key technical challenges: the generation of RegEx print and the matching process of RegEx print. The generation of RegEx is tricky as we need to tradeoff between two conflicting goals: filtering effectiveness, which means that we want the RegEx print to filter out as many unmatched items as possible, and matching speed, which means that we want the matching speed of the RegEx print as high as possible. To address the first challenge, we propose some measurement tools for RegEx complexity and filtering effectiveness, and use it to guide the generation of RegEx print. To address the second challenge, we propose a fast RegEx print matching solution using Ternary Content Addressable Memory. We implemented our approach and conducted experiments on real world data sets. Our experimental results show that RegexFilter can speedup the potential throughput of RegEx matching by 21.5 times and 20.3 times for RegEx sets of Snort and L7-Filter systems, at the cost of less than 0.2 Mb TCAM chip. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
