In parallel programs, the tasks of a given application must cooperate in order to accomplish the required computation. However, the communication time between the tasks may be different depending on which core they are executing and how the memory hierarchy and interconnection are used. The problem is even more important in multi-core machines with NUMA characteristics, since the remote access imposes high overhead, making them more sensitive to thread and data mapping. In this context, process mapping is a technique that provides performance gains by improving the use of resources such as interconnections, main memory and cache memory. The problem of detecting the best mapping is considered NP-Hard. Furthermore, in shared memory environments, there is an additional difficulty of finding the communication pattern, which is implicit and occurs through memory accesses. This work aims to provide a method for static mapping for NUMA architectures which does not require any prior knowledge of the application. Different metrics were adopted and an heuristic method based on the Edmonds matching algorithm was used to obtain the mapping. In order to evaluate our proposal, we use the NAS Parallel Benchmarks (NPB) and two modern multi-core NUMA machines. Results show performance gains of up to 75% compared to the native scheduler and memory allocator of the operating system. © 2011 IEEE.

We present a novel platform for noninvasive transmural cardiac electrophysiological imaging (NTCEI),which combines body-surface electrocardiographic data and image-derived anatomic data to compute subject-specific electrophysiological dynamics and electroanatomic substrates not only on heart surfaces but along the depth of the *** success on real-data experiments include 1) transmural scar quantification for patients withprevious history of myocardial infarction;2) trasnmural EP and scar imaging for patients with ventricular arrhythmia;and 3) transmural EP and scar imaging on porcine hearts with chronic *** experiments demonstrated the potentials in computing transmural EP anomalies using only noninvasive observations and without any conditionspecific knowledge a priori,which could not be achieved with either current EP mapping or structural imaging techniques *** will also briefly discuss development towards hardware realizations and clinical feasibility.

In Java programs, it needs to use the information of the method type to resolve the virtual method dynamically, which restricts the performance greatly. Currently, the solution is mainly the technique of inline caching, which can be divided into two categories: monomorphic inline caching and polymorphic inline caching. Because of the simple implementation of monomorphic inline caching, it is more commonly used, but it cannot resolve the problem of frequently seeing different types of objects at one call site. Although polymorphic inline caching can solve this problem, it is costly. This paper presents the CAM hardware table, proposes a virtual method invoking mechanism based on software and hardware co-design. It solves the problem of frequently seeing different types of objects at one call site, and does not introduce additional overhead. The experimental evaluation shows that it improves the cached hit rate from 13.3% to 76.4% and improves 16.2% performance of the virtual test;it improves the performance of SPECjvm98 by 6.4% on average. © 2011 IEEE.

Cache replacement policy plays an important role in guaranteeing the availability of cache blocks, reducing miss rates, and improving applications' overall performance. However, recent research efforts on improving replacement policies require either significant additional hardware or major modifications to the organization of the existing cache. In this study, we propose the PAC-PLRU cache replacement policy. PAC-PLRU not only utilizes but also judiciously salvages the prediction information discarded from a widely-adopted stride prefetcher. The main idea behind PAC-PLRU is utilizing the prediction results generated by the existing stride prefetcher and preventing these predicted cache blocks from being replaced in the near future. Experimental results show that leveraging the PAC-PLRU with a stride prefetcher reduces the average L2 cache miss rate by 91 over a baseline system with only PLRU policy, and by 22 over a system using PLRU with an unconnected stride prefetcher. Most importantly, PAC-PLRU only requires minor modifications to existing cache architecture to get these benefits. The proposed PAC-PLRU policy is promising in fostering the connection between prefetching and replacement policies, and have a lasting impact on improving the overall cache performance. © 2011 IEEE.

Tongue diagnosis is a unique and important diagnostic method in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is used to observe abnormal changes in the tongue color for identifying syndrome patterns. However, due to its qualitative, subjective and experience-based nature, it is hard to represent and visualize tongue color in computerized tongue diagnosis. This will undoubtedly limit the application of tongue color analysis in clinical practice. In this paper, we proposed a visualization system for local pixel separation to recognize this intrinsic pathological trait: tongue color. This system captures a digital image, extracts a contour of the tongue and constructs a lookup table. Finally, this lookup table is employed to construct some figures of different classes for the representation and visualization tongue color. The experimental results can draw a conclusion: Tongue color is a kind of pixel distribution. © 2011 IEEE.

Along with the rapid growth of medical data, image retrieval, a kind of technology for browsing, searching and retrieving similar images of the given image, has become increasingly important from a large database of digital images. Tongue coating is the most important characteristic to reveal the pathological changes of the tongues for identifying diseases. In this paper, an efficient and effective technique is proposed to retrieve coating images. We obtain the pixel template value of pixels by applying thresholding segmentation based relative entropy. Then we use a Reduced K Nearest Neighbor algorithm to extract 20-dimension feature vector based on a prior layout distribution. Finally, a distance based the cumulative ratio is proposed for tongue coating image matching. The experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme eliminates the imprecision and uncertainty associated with medical tongue coating analysis. © 2011 IEEE.

Examination of the tongue condition is a standard diagnostic method in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and takes account of a wide variety of features including shape, texture, and color. The terms "warm", "neutral", and "cool" are used to refer to a kind of chromatics characteristic of the tongue color and are associated with various health states. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised (cluster and label) scheme for tongue color analysis on "warm or cool". In the training part, the proposed scheme makes use of a classical clustering algorithm, Expectation Maximization, to divide all pixels in tongue gamut into 150 clusters. Then we construct two auxiliary images for each cluster and manual labeling endows these clusters with category labels of "warm or cool". Finally, each trained category on "warm or cool" is set up by sum some clusters approximately. In the testing part, we use a lookup table to divide all pixels in an input image into three distinct categories of "warm or cool". In experiments conducted on a total of 392 tongue samples, our system achieved an accuracy of 91.1%. © 2011 IEEE.

The need for procedures and methodologies used in clinical information standardization is continuous, requiring the current telemedicine networks to evolve and adapt by using mature standards and guidelines as the basis for clinical documents transmitted through the network. In this work, we present a different approach for large-scale use of DICOM SR in telemedicine networks using structured vocabularies as its foundation, resulting in a reliable, efficient and data mining ready application applied in a real world telemedicine network. This approach is applied in a large-scale network where 60 physicians report daily an average of 400 reports; resulting in more than 80,000 reports written and stored in the last nine months. We conclude that the use of this approach can reduce eventual syntax or conceptual mistakes by using proper structured vocabularies in addition to DICOM SR.

Data Locality is one of the critical factors to affect performance. This paper proposes a next-k-node scheduling (NKS) method to improve the data locality of map tasks. The method first calculates the probabilities of each map task, and then preferentially schedules the one with the highest probability. It generates low probabilities for the tasks which satisfy node locality with the nodes to issue requests, so it can reserve these tasks to these nodes. We have implemented the NKS method in hadoop-0.20.2. The experiment results have shown that the NKS method reduced 78% of the map tasks processed without node locality, reduced 77% of the network load caused by the tasks, and improved the performance of Hadoop MapReduce when comparing with the default task scheduling method in Hadoop. Obviously, the NKS method is very suitable for the homogeneous environment with network overload. © 2011 IEEE.

An off-line based QoS routing scheme for LEO satellite networks

With the development of the space technology, the low performance of the on-board computing becomes a bottleneck of the satellite networks. To solve this problem, we proposed a new off-line QoS routing scheme for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks based on ground station in this paper. This routing scheme is off-line and based on prediction. The most computing task of the routing scheme will be implemented on the ground station with algebraic methods and on-board computing complexity will be reduced to polynomial. Simulation results show this new routing scheme can provide more QoS guarantees and higher performance. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.
