This paper presents an improved neural architecture for gaze movement control in target searching. Compared with the four-layer neural structure proposed in [14], a new movement coding neuron layer is inserted between the third layer and the fourth layer in previous structure for finer gaze motion estimation and control. The disadvantage of the previous structure is that all the large responding neurons in the third layer were involved in gaze motion synthesis by transmitting weighted responses to the movement control neurons in the fourth layer. However, these large responding neurons may produce different groups of movement estimation. To discriminate and group these neurons' movement estimation in terms of grouped connection weights form them to the movement control neurons in the fourth layer is necessary. Adding a new neuron layer between the third layer and the fourth lay is the measure that we solve this problem. Comparing experiments on target locating showed that the new architecture made the significant improvement.

Currently, with the evolution of virtualization technology, cloud computing mode has become more and more popular. However, people still concern the issues of the runtime integrity and data security of cloud computing platform, as well as the service efficiency on such computing platform. At the same time, according to our knowledge, the design theory of the trusted virtual computing environment and its core system software for such network-based computing platform is at the exploratory stage. In this paper, we believe that efficiency and isolation are the two key proprieties of the trusted virtual computing environment. To guarantee these two proprieties, based on the design principle of splitting, customizing, reconstructing, and isolation-based enhancing to the platform, we introduce TRainbow, a novel trusted virtual computing platform developing by our research *** the two creative mechanisms, that is, capacity flowing amongst VMs and VM-based kernel reconstructing, TRainbow provides great improvements (up to 42%) in service performance and isolated reliable computing environment for Internet-oriented, large-scale, concurrent services.

MicroRNAs, by regulating the expression of hundreds of target genes, play critical roles in developmental biology and the etiology of numerous diseases, including cancer. As vast amounts of microRNA expression profile data are now publicly available, the integration of those data sets with gene expression profiles represents an extremely active area of life science research. However, the ability to conduct genome wide microRNA-mRNA (gene) integration currently requires sophisticated, high-end informatics tools, significant expertise in bioinformatics and computer science to carry out the complex integration analysis. In addition, increased computing infrastructure capabilities are essential in order to accommodate large data sets. In this study, we have extending BioVLAB cloud workbench to develop an environment for the integrated analysis of microRNA and mRNA expression data, named BioVLAB-MMIA. The workbench facilitates computations on the Amazon EC2 and S3 resources orchestrated by XBaya Workflow Suite. The advantages of BioVLAB-MMIA over the web-based MMIA system include: 1) readily expanded as new computational tools become available; 2) easily modifiable by re-configuring graphic icons in the workflow; 3) on-demand cloud computing resources can be used on an as needed basis; 4) distributed orchestration supports complex and long running workflows asynchronously.

Node failures in Wireless Sensor Networks composed by static sensor nodes are common due to the nature of the sensor devices and the usually harsh environments in which they are deployed. Node failures can diminish the performance of the network as a whole, thus affecting its functionality in delivering the desired services. For instance, significant regions can become uncovered due to failure of several nearby nodes. This paper reports a study about the use of mobile sensor nodes acting in cooperation with static ones in order to fill gaps created by faulty static nodes. The proposed fault handling mechanism presents alternative policies with pros and cons, depending on the user priorities imposed to the system and the occurrence of failures. A discussion about this topic is presented based on results obtained by simulation of the proposed mechanisms.

Collective Intelligence has received much attention in recent years, as organizations and businesses discover the power of crowds. With new technologies, such as blogs, twitter, wikis, photo sharing, collaborative tagging and social networking sites, people may create and disseminate content as never before. Many organizations are looking for ways to harness this power, which is being called collective intelligence. Additionally, many open-source initiatives have shown that it is possible to obtain high quality results from collectively produced work. In this paper, we consider the domain of emergency response. We have been working in this domain for a few years now, mostly focusing on small disaster relief groups and field command. One of the command problems is lack of information about the location where the disaster occurred. We believe some of this information could be crowdsourced, changing current practices and enabling more effective response to the situation. In this paper, we discuss the possibilities for crowdsourcing and present an initial proposal for harnessing collective intelligence for the fire department. © 2010 IEEE.

Human interaction is one of the most important characteristics of group social dynamics in meetings. In this paper, we propose an approach for capture, recognition, and visualization of human interactions. Unlike physical interactions (e.g., turn-taking and addressing), the human interactions considered here are incorporated with semantics, i.e., user intention or attitude toward a topic. We adopt a collaborative approach for capturing interactions by employing multiple sensors, such as video cameras, microphones, and motion sensors. A multimodal method is proposed for interaction recognition based on a variety of contexts, including head gestures, attention from others, speech tone, speaking time, interaction occasion (spontaneous or reactive), and information about the previous interaction. A support vector machines (SVM) classifier is used to classify human interaction based on these features. A graphical user interface called MMBrowser is presented for interaction visualization. Experimental results have shown the effectiveness of our approach. ©2009 IEEE.

To meet the increasing needs of home-based healthcare, we propose a novel networked low-cost and wearable healthcare monitoring system, namely TCM-PCA, for pulse analysis in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM). The unique innovations of the system are as follows: (1) We propose a novel adaptive features extraction algorithm for pulse waveform to improve physiological feature extraction accuracy of sensed pulse waveform data. (2) We propose a light-weight information fusion framework for human symptom identification according to our previous work. (3) We present a robust external pressure control algorithm for pulse measure to obtain stable pulse waveform data on the pulse-sensor nodes. In this demo, we will demonstrate the working procedure of the system and prove the innovations summarized above. ©2010 IEEE.

In cluster file systems, the metadata management is critical to the whole system. Past researches mainly focus on journaling which alone is not enough to provide high-available metadata service. Some others try to use replication, but the extra latency accompanied is a main problem. To guarantee both availability and efficiency, we propose a mechanism for building highly available metadata servers based on replication, which integrates Paxos algorithm effectively into metadata service. The Packed Multi-Paxos is proposed to reduce the latency brought by replication, which is self-adaptive and can make the replication to achieve high throughput under heavy client load and low latency under light client load. By designing efficient architecture and coordination mechanism, all replica server nodes simultaneously provide metadata read-access service. This high-available mechanism could decrease the impact of server failures and there is no interruption of service. The performance results show that the latency caused by replication and redundancy is well under control, and the performance of metadata read operation gains improvement. © 2010 IEEE.

Style and variation are two vital components of human motion: style differentiates between examples of the same behavior (slow walk vs. fast walk) while variation differentiates between examples of the same style (vigorous vs. lackadaisical arm swing). This paper presents a novel method to simultaneously model style and variation of motion data captured from different subjects performing the same behavior. An articulated skeleton is separated into several joint groups, and latent variation parameters are introduced to parameterize the variation of each partial motion. The relationships between user-defined style parameters and latent variation parameters are represented by a Bayesian network that is automatically learned from example motions. The geostatistical model, named universal Kriging, is extended to be a style-and-variation interpolation to generate partial motions for all joint groups. Experiments with sideways stepping, walking and running behaviors have demonstrated that the motion sequences synthesized by our method are smooth and natural, while their variations can be easily noticed even when their input style parameters are the same. © The Eurographics Association 2010.

We research the multimedia information hiding (MIH) which is a technology to overlay digital information on multimedia contents such as picture, sound, document, etc. As application to disaster management of MIH, we have developed a new technology called "PAIH" (Public Address Information Hiding) which is a technology to overlay information such as position or destination on siren sound of urgent vehicles. Siren sound is allowed to degrade of sound quality, but PAIH is required to decode correct information from siren sound with pitch shift (Doppler effect) or under noisy environment.
