Learner attention affects learning efficiency. However, in many classes, teachers cannot assess the degree of attention of every student. When a teacher is capable of addressing inattentive students immediately, he can avoid situations in which students are inattentive. Many studies have analyzed student attentiveness by the applying of image detection technologies. If this mechanism can be applied to in-class learning, it will help teachers keep students attentive, and reduce teacher load during class. This study mainly applies fuzzy logic analysis of student facial images when participating in class. Applying fuzzy logic can prevent erroneous judgments associated with a single term, and help teachers deal with student attentiveness.

Spam fighting is a classic puzzle in network security. In the past decades, many filtering spam solutions have been proposed. However, currently the conventional techniques still suffer from high false positives and false negatives, especially the former which usually cannot be accepted by the end users. This paper proposes a novel online URL-based spam filter (UBSF) on the basis of analyses over the conventional especially the URL-based anti-spam techniques. UBSF identifies spam by comparing the similarity of the extracted URLs (universal resource locator) from them with the URLs from our user-oriented standard URL Library (SUL). Experimental evaluations both from the contrast experiment and the prototype based on UBSF demonstrate it can significantly raise the filtering accuracy, effectively reduce false positives and can be applied to online process and heavy traffic environment by reducing the computational cost than the state-of-the-art techniques.

Conventional random access scan (RAS) designs, although economic in test power dissipation, test application time and test data volume, are expensive in area and routing overhead. In this paper, we present a localized RAS architecture (LRAS) to address this issue. A novel scan cell structure, which has fewer transistors than the multiplexer-type scan cell, is proposed to eliminate the global test enable signal and to localize the row enable and the column enable signals. Experimental results on ISCAS'89 and ITC'99 benchmark circuits demonstrate that LRAS has 54% less area overhead than multiplexer-type scan chain based designs, while significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art RAS scheme in routing overhead.

We have developed a new strategy and espouse a novel paradigm for large-scale computing and real-time interactive visualization. This philosophy calls for intense interactive sessions for a couple of hours at a time at the expense of storing data on many disk drives during regular or heroic runs on massively parallel systems. We have already carried out successfully real-time volume-rendering visualization by employing hundreds of processors for a grid with over 25 million unknowns. Both Cartesian and spherical 3D mantle convection are visualized. The volume-rendered images are viewed on a large display device, with many panels holding around 13 million pixels. We will employ a software strategy involving an hierarchical rendering service, which will have as software an Ajax interface for interactive visualization of large data sets on many different platforms from desktop PC's to hand-held devices, such as the OQO and the Nokia N-800. An option for stereo viewing is also implemented. We have installed a user interface as web application, using Java and Ajax framework in order to achieve over the Internet reasonable accessibility to our ongoing runs. Our goal is to expand the array of interactive devices, which will make it feasible to carry out ubiquitous visualization and monitoring of large-scale simulations or onsite events and to allow for collaborations across oceans. © Springer-Verlag 2008.

Multiplication operations are the normal operations in operating systems or scientific calculations. Multipliers embedded in processors, DSP or SoC are well optimized for best performance, and they are sensitive to test overhead. Instruction level test is a popular functional test approach for microprocessors test, and it can get satisfactory test results. But for the multipliers, one important part of microprocessors, there is no detail on how to testing them. This paper presents an instruction level test approach for the multiplier test. The proposed approach does not modify the multipliers and does not need any extra logic just using instructions of the processors to test processors' multipliers. Sequentially it does not have any test cost on area or timing. Moreover the instruction-level test is suited for at-speed test in nature. Experimental results on the real processor's circuits show that the instruction level test approach has good effect on parallel multipliers © 2008 IEEE.

3D surface matching is fundamental for shape analysis. As a powerful method in geometric analysis, Ricci flow can flexibly design metrics by prescribed target curvature. In this paper we describe a novel approach for matching surfaces with complicated topologies based on hyperbolic Ricci flow. For surfaces with negative Euler characteristics, such as a human face with holes (eye contours), the canonical hyperbolic metric is conformal to the original and can be efficiently computed. Then the surface can be canonically decomposed to hyperbolic hexagons. By matching the corresponding hyperbolic hexagons, the matching between surfaces can be easily established. Compared to existing methods, hyperbolic Ricci flow induces diffeomorphisms between surfaces with complicated topologies with negative Euler characteristics, while avoiding singularities. Furthermore, all the boundaries are intrinsically mapped to hyperbolic lines as alignment constraints. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of this intrinsic shape representation for 3D face matching and registration.

Enhancing Training Set for Face Detection Based on SVM

According to support vector machines (SVMs), for those geometric approach based classification methods, examples close to the class boundary usually are more informative than others. Taking face detection as an example, this paper addresses the problem of enhancing given training set and presents a nonlinear method to tackle the problem effectively. Based on SVM and improved reduced set algorithm (IRS), the method generates new examples lying close to the face/non-face class boundary to enlarge the original dataset and hence improve its sample distribution. The new IRS algorithm has greatly improved the approximation performance of the original reduced set (RS) method by embedding a new distance metric called image Euclidean distance (IMED) into the kernel function. To verify the generalization capability of the proposed method, the enhanced dataset is used to train an AdaBoost-based face detector and test it on the MIT+CMU frontal face test set. The experimental results show that the original collected database can be enhanced effectively by the proposed method to learn a face detector with improved generalization performance.

Recently, combining a video recording of a presentation along with the digital slides used in it has become popular in e-learning and presentation of archives. For users of the archives, it is useful to preview a digest of such content to grasp the atmosphere and/or an outline of the presentation. This paper proposes a method of automatic digest generation by extracting important scenes from the presentation content. The extracted scenes are chosen based on several factors such as frequency and specificity of words, scene duration and order. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed methods are evaluated by comparing with testers' answer sets for actual lectures.
