Emerging 64 bitOSpsilas supply a huge amount of memory address space that is essential for new applications using very large data. It is expected that the memory in connected nodes can be used to store swapped pages efficiently, especially in a dedicated cluster which has a high-speed network such as 10 GbE and Infiniband. In this paper, we propose the distributed large memory system (DLM), which provides very large virtual memory by using remote memory distributed over the nodes in a cluster. The performance of DLM programs using remote memory is compared to ordinary programs using local memory. The results of STREAM, NPB and Himeno benchmarks show that the DLM achieves better performance than other remote paging schemes using a block swap device to access remote memory. In addition to performance, DLM offers the advantages of easy availability and high portability, because it is a user-level software without the need for special hardware. To obtain high performance, the DLM can tune its parameters independently from kernel swap parameters. We also found that DLMpsilas independence of kernel swapping provides more stable behavior.

Face representation is important for face recognition system. Though most popular face representations are based on uniform grid sampling, some recent face recognition systems adopt weighted sampling on the different regions of a face. Psychological analysis of visual attention or human eye fixations on human face images may suggest some cues for face representation. human visual system (HVS) gives different weight to different region of human face via space-variant sampling on fovea and non-uniform distribution of fixations. This paper focuses on the problem of simulation of the foveated imaging phenomenon in HVS, and introduction of foveated imaging method into reconstruction of face in region of interest (ROI) using different fixation sources. We compare the effectiveness of actual fixation on reconstruction of face in ROI with uniform, random distribution fixation as well as fixation generated by artificial model. The experimental results on 100 face images from FRGC [7] data set show that actual fixation positions and model-generated fixation positions reconstruct the face in ROI with considerably better quality. A further analysis on the statistics of fixation positions also shows that the distribution of the fixation points is consistent with the weights of different regions on face images used in some other face recognition systems.

In this paper, we present a parallelization of a filtering algorithm related to non-linear anisotropic diffusion, used to enhance the performance of an application in a parallel distributed system. The anisotropic diffusion is a well-established technique for image enhancement by means of diffusivity functions, which act as border attenuators. However, it requires a high computational cost when a large amount of data is used. The proposed implementation was parallelized considering both point-to-point and collective communications, adopting the MPI paradigm. Results from both approaches indicate that the proposed algorithm has reached interesting levels of performance (81% and 93% of efficiency, respectively) when compared to the execution of one process in a single computer node. In addition, our results indicate an enhancement of around 21% utilizing the collective communication strategy when compared to point-to-point communication.

The clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders during neonatal periods are often not apparent. If not treated earlier, irreversible damages such as mental retardation or even death may occur. Therefore, practicing the newborn screening is essential to prevent newborns from these damages. In the paper, we propose a newborn screening system using Support Vector Machines (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate, interpret, and determine whether a newborn has metabolic disorder diseases. The raw data, i.e., substances concentrations, were collected from the Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS). In addition, based on the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we design the system under Web Services .NET environment. The system provides features including heterogeneous platforms, protocols, as well as applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information Systems later.

In this paper, we presented a method to improve structural modeling based on conserved domain clusters and structure-anchored alignments. We first constructed a template library of structural clusters for all conserved sequence domains. Then, for each cluster, we built the profile using the structure and sequence information. Finally we use the profile and structural alignments as anchors to increase the alignment accuracy between a query and its templates. Our preliminary results show that this method can be used for the partial prediction for a majority of known protein sequences with better qualities. Copyright 2007 ACM.

A central question in game theory and artificial intelligence is how a rational agent should behave in a complex environment, given that it cannot perform unbounded computations. We study strategic aspects of this question by formulating a simple model of a game with additional costs (computational or otherwise) for each strategy. First we connect this to zero-sum games, proving a counter-intuitive generalization of the classic min-max theorem to zero-sum games with the addition of strategy costs. We then show that potential games with strategy costs remain potential games. Both zero-sum and potential games with strategy costs maintain a very appealing property: simple learning dynamics converge to equilibrium.

Data hiding in a kind of PDF texts for secret communication

In this paper, we present a novel steganographic technique for hiding data in a kind of PDF texts. We first point out the secret channels in a kind of PDF English texts, which are generated from documents that make the texts justified to occupy the full line width and position each character individually. In succession, we describe our steganographic system PDFStego in which several strategies are applied to improve security, such as making use of redundancy to complement security;constituting two chaotic maps to meet the Kerckhoffs principle and to prevent statistical attacks, and applying the secure hash algorithm to enable integrity service and blindly extracting service. Moreover, we define the embedding capacity of our system. PDFStego can be used to exchange sensitive data securely or to add copyright information to the PDF files.
