The Superconducting Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center, a DOE National Quantum Information science Research Center, has conducted a comprehensive and coordinated study using superconducting transmon qubit chips with known performance metrics to identify the underlying materials-level sources of device-to-device performance variation. Following qubit coherence measurements, these qubits of varying base superconducting metals and substrates have been examined with various nondestructive and invasive material characterization techniques at Northwestern University, Ames National Laboratory, and Fermilab as part of a blind study. We find trends in variations of the depth of the etched substrate trench, the thickness of the surface oxide, and the geometry of the sidewall, which when combined, lead to correlations with the T1 lifetime across different devices. In addition, we provide a list of features that varied from device to device, for which the impact on performance requires further studies. Finally, we identify two low-temperature characterization techniques that may potentially serve as proxy tools for qubit measurements. These insights provide materials-oriented solutions to not only reduce performance variations across neighboring devices, but also to engineer and fabricate devices with optimal geometries to achieve performance metrics beyond the state-of-the-art values. © 2025, CC BY.

Lead telluride is an important thermoelectric material due to its large Seebeck coefficient combined with its unusually low thermal conductivity that is related to the strong anharmonicity of phonons in this material. Here, we have studied the resonant and nonperturbative coupling of transverse optical phonons in lead telluride with cavity photons inside small-mode-volume metallic metasurface cavities that have photonic modes with terahertz frequencies. We observed a giant vacuum Rabi splitting on the order of the bare phonon and cavity frequencies. Through terahertz time-domain spectroscopy experiments, we systematically studied the vacuum Rabi splitting as a function of sample thickness, temperature, and cavity length. Under the strongest light–matter coupling conditions, the strength of coupling exceeded the bare phonon and cavity frequencies, putting the system into the deep-strong coupling regime. These results demonstrate that this uniquely tunable platform is promising for realizing and understanding predicted cavity-vacuum-induced ferroelectric instabilities and exploring applications of light–matter coupling in the ultrastrong and deep-strong coupling regimes in quantum technology. Human interaction is one of the most important characteristics of group social dynamics in meetings. In this paper, we propose an approach for capture, recognition, and visualization of human interactions. Unlike physical interactions (e.g., turn-taking and addressing), the human interactions considered here are incorporated with semantics, i.e., user intention or attitude toward a topic. We adopt a collaborative approach for capturing interactions by employing multiple sensors, such as video cameras, microphones, and motion sensors. A multimodal method is proposed for interaction recognition based on a variety of contexts, including head gestures, attention from others, speech tone, speaking time, interaction occasion (spontaneous or reactive), and information about the previous interaction. A support vector machines (SVM) classifier is used to classify human interaction based on these features. A graphical user interface called MMBrowser is presented for interaction visualization. Experimental results have shown the effectiveness of our approach. ©2009 IEEE.

To meet the increasing needs of home-based healthcare, we propose a novel networked low-cost and wearable healthcare monitoring system, namely TCM-PCA, for pulse analysis in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM). The unique innovations of the system are as follows: (1) We propose a novel adaptive features extraction algorithm for pulse waveform to improve physiological feature extraction accuracy of sensed pulse waveform data. (2) We propose a light-weight information fusion framework for human symptom identification according to our previous work. (3) We present a robust external pressure control algorithm for pulse measure to obtain stable pulse waveform data on the pulse-sensor nodes. In this demo, we will demonstrate the working procedure of the system and prove the innovations summarized above. ©2010 IEEE.

Microprocessors have turned to multicore, i.e. multiple processor cores, along with some levels of on-chip caches and interconnection networks, integrated on a singe chip. However, it brings challenges on how to program these processors effectively and efficiently, which is known as the "programming Wall". This paper proposes a systematic approach to attack the problem. We describe an extension of Java programming language with dataflow paradigm and transactional memory. Our approach alleviates the difficulties of parallel programming by providing a higher level of abstraction and relieving programmers of low-level threading and locking details. We also describe the design of a runtime system to support and optimize for the extension. We have implemented a prototype based on Apache Harmony DRL Virtual Machine. Preliminary experimental results on a 16-core SMP machine show that our approach achieves reasonable scalability and can adapt to the variance of available hardware resources. © 2008 IEEE.

The increasing complexity of cyber attacks, including 0-day vulnerabilities and APTs, has rendered traditional defenses like firewalls and IDS/IPS insufficient. Honeypots have been proposed as a solution to detect and analyze new attack types by simulating vulnerable systems and capturing malicious activities. However, the deployment of honeypots introduces unique risks, necessitating a comprehensive threat modeling approach to mitigate potential drawbacks. This paper explores the intersection of threat modeling and honeypot deployment, identifying threats, and proposing effective mitigation strategies. We applied a threat model adapted from a simplified PASTA framework based on risk-centric and proposed mitigation plans such as network segmentation, outbound traffic filtering, resource monitoring, and regular updates. Additionally, we discussed alternative honeypot deployments outside the organization's internal network to avoid arising risks. We found that deploying high-interaction honeypots carries high risks due to a broader attack flow. The novelty of this study lies in adapting the attack-flow approach for honeypot threat modeling, providing a structured method to analyze and mitigate honeypot-specific threats. Future research directions include conducting long-term studies and detailed case studies to further optimize the interaction between honeypot deployments and threat modeling for enhanced security outcomes. © 2024 IEEE.

Existing clustering methods have so far not separated paralogs from orthologs effectively. Since proteins evolve with their structural and functional domains as independent units, to achieve a higher level of sensitivity and specificity in assessing the similarity, it is necessary to add the domain information. We presented a method to improve the clustering results of the orthologs and paralogs from multiple species by adding the domain information. First, we do the all-against-all blast between the protein sequences. At the same time, we make the blast between the sequences and Pfam-A database to find which of the sequences share the same domain. Then we use this information as an additional criterion for filtering false relationships in all-against-all BLASTP results, and generate a similarity matrix. Final, the MCL algorithm is applied to group orthologs from multiple species. Our preliminary results show that our method can improve strikingly the precision of sequence clustering.

Electronic government, or e-Government, is the use of information and communication technology by the public sector (ICT). Additionally, it can be viewed as a paradigm shift in terms of how governments operate. The government protects public values, while citizens act as problem solvers, co-creators, and active participants in value creation. On the other hand, decentralized systems have grown in popularity over the last few years. Data has become a significant issue in decentralized E-Government;each local entity has their own data, which is private. A suitable data governance tool is required to ensure that data governance is properly implemented and to prevent the organizational entity from leaking information. The amount of die area consumed by scan chains and scan control circuit can range from 15%∼30%, and scan chain failures account for almost 50% of chip failures. As the conventional diagnosis process usually runs on the faulty free scan chain, scan chain faults may disable the diagnostic process, leaving large failure area to time-consuming failure analysis. In this paper, a design-for-diagnosis (DFD) technique is proposed to diagnose faulty scan chains precisely and efficiently, moreover, with the assistant of the proposed technique, the conventional logic diagnostic process can be carried on with faulty scan chains. The proposed approach is entirely compatible with conventional scan-based design. Previously proposed software-based diagnostic methods for conventional scan designs can still be applied to our design. Experiments on ISCAS'89 benchmark circuits are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed DFD technique. ©2008 IEEE.

Reference genomes of root microbes are essential for metagenomic analyses and mechanistic studies of crop root microbiomes. By combining high-throughput bacterial cultivation with metagenomic sequencing, we constructed comprehensive bacterial and viral genome collections from the roots of wheat, rice, maize, and Medicago. The crop root bacterial genome collection (CRBC) significantly expands the quantity and phylogenetic diversity of publicly available crop root bacterial genomes, with 6,699 bacterial genomes (68.9% from isolates) and 1,817 undefined species, expanding crop root bacterial diversity by 290.6%. The crop root viral genome collection (CRVC) contains 9,736 non-redundant viral genomes, with 1,572 previously unreported genus-level clusters in crop root microbiomes. From these, we identified conserved bacterial functions enriched in root microbiomes across soils and host species and uncovered previously unexplored bacteria-virus connections in crop root ecosystems. Together, the CRBC and CRVC serve as valuable resources for investigating microbial mechanisms and applications, supporting sustainable agriculture. © 2025 The Authors
