The Collaborative Large-scale Engineering Analysis Network for Environmental Research (CLEANER) Project Office has been established with funding from the National science Foundation (NSF) to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a coalition of 11 other institutions. The project office is coordinating the creation of a strategic plan consisting of research, cyberinfrastructure, and education plans that set forth a roadmap for the collaborative engineering analysis network for the study of environmental problems. This report will be completed by July 2007 and requires input from K-12 educators, administrators and other stakeholders in K-12 education. This paper describes the CLEANER project, provides an example of the CLEANER Education Committee's vision for the K-12 area and lists contacts for further information. The intention of this paper is to elicit input from the K-12 engineering education community, including K-12 educators, on how the CLEANER Education Plan could better meet the future needs of K-12 students and educators © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

We present the use of the polysaccharide chitosan for immobilizing biomolecules on microfabricated device surfaces. The main advantages of chitosan are its abundance of primary amine groups and its ability to be electrodeposited. Biomolecules are easily attached to chitosan 's amines by standard glutaraldehyde chemistry. The electrodeposition of chitosan allows accurate spatial and temporal control of biomolecule placement. We have demonstrated this biofunctionalization method for two different bioMEMS devices: a biophotonic sensor and a micromechanical biosensor. We have successfully assembled probe DNA on each of them and detected hybridization with target DNA as a demonstration of sensor operation. Here, we briefly present the fabrication procedure and testing results for both of these bioMEMS sensing devices

This session relates directly to this year's conference theme Sparking Synergies: Bringing Research and Practice Together as it brings together researchers from different disciplines (information science and educational technology) to discuss current issues and trends related to Web usage across student populations. “Complex design problems require more knowledge than any single person possesses” (Arias, Eden, Fischer, Gorman, and Scharff, 2000, p. 84), thus each panelist will contribute highlights of his or her current research regarding the design, information, and pedagogical, needs of specific student populations (K-12 to higher education). After the panelists have presented their findings Diane Nahl will intertwine the threads of the panelists' conversations and, with the audience's assistance, begin to weave a fabric to uncover common usability issues.

AVS is Chinese new audio and video coding standard. A pipeline-based architecture of inverse quantizer for AVS video standard is proposed in this paper. Due to using one-pass processing for Run Length Decoding, Inverse Scan and Inverse Quantization, the architecture can save many buffers, which are used to store intermediate results during multi-pass processing. Furthermore, the processing speed is up to one coefficient per clock cycle. This architecture has been described in Verilog HDL, simulated with VCS digital simulator, and synthesized using 0.18μm CMOS cells library by Synopsys Design Compiler. The circuit totally costs about 13.7k logic gates when running at 200MHz. Simulation results show that the architecture can support real-time inverse quantization for HDTV (1280×720, 60fps) video. This architecture has been implemented in a single chip HDTV decoder for AVS video and audio. © 2005 IEEE.

The TF-IDF scheme is widely used to characterize documents in an information retrieval (IR) system based on the vector space model. However, for documents having a hyperlink structure such as Web pages, the Web page contents can be characterized more accurately by using the contents of hyperlinked neighboring pages. Therefore, in this paper, we propose several techniques for using the contents of hyperlinked neighboring pages to improve the TF-IDF scheme for Web pages and then verity the effectiveness of our techniques. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Image matching is a fundamental task of many computer vision problems. In this paper we present a novel approach for matching two images in the presence of image rotation, scale, and illumination changes. The proposed approach is based on local invariant features. A two-step process detects local invariant regions. Characteristic circles associated with these regions illustrate the position and radius of the regions. Then, the regions are represented by a new image descriptor. To test the new descriptor, we evaluate it in image matching and retrieval experiments. The experimental results show that using our descriptors results in effective and faster matching. © 2005 IEEE.

One-on-one educational computing refers to I student I computing device, which means every student in a group uses a digital learning device. In this paper, we present a model of student question generation called AGQ, which stands for "asking a good question," supported by one-on-one educational computing in the classroom settings. AGQ is designed for engaging students in a challenging learning activity that potentially involves higher-level cognitive processing operations. We shall describe the general design of AGQ, called Product Evolution, and that the current version is a variation of it.

Sign language recognition (SLR) plays an important role in human-computer interaction (HCI), especially for the convenient communication between deaf and hearing society. How to enhance the traditional hidden Markov models (HMM) based SLR is an important issue in the SLR community. And how to refine the boundaries of the classifiers to effectively characterize the property of spread-out of the training samples is another significant issue. In this paper, a new classification framework applying adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) strategy to continuous HMM (CHMM) training procedure at the subwords classification level for SLR is presented. The ensemble of multiple composite CHMMs for each subword trained in boosting iterations tends to concentrate more on the hard-to-classify samples so as to generate more complex decision boundary than that of the single HMM classifier. Experimental results on the vocabulary of frequently used Chinese sign language (CSL) subwords show that the proposed boosted CHMM outperforms the conventional CHMM for SLR. Copyright 2005 ACM.

As one of the important research areas of multimodal interaction, sign language recognition (SLR) has attracted increasing interest. In SLR, especially on medium or large vocabulary, it is usually difficult or impractical to collect enough training data. Thus, how to improve the recognition on the limited training samples is a significant issue. In this paper, a simple but effective hierarchical voting classification (HVC) scheme for improving visual SLR, which makes efficient use of limited training data, is proposed. The key idea of HVC scheme is similar to but not the same as Bagging technique. Firstly, it constructs several training sets from the original training set in a combinatorial fashion to generate the corresponding continuous hidden Markov models (CHMM) ensemble. Then, it determines the ensemble output by appropriate local voting strategy. Finally, it obtains the final recognition result by the global voting. Experimental results show that the HVC scheme outperforms the conventional single CHMM approach in terms of recognition accuracy on the limited training data. Copyright © 2005 ACM.

The multimodal and time-varying aspects of blind equalization problems in communication systems are treated here by means of an immune-inspired strategy capable of estimating the coefficients of the FIR equalization filter in an unsupervised manner. The associated optimization problem is solved by means of a population-based search technique characterized by a dynamic control of the population size and diversity maintenance. Static and time-varying channels have been proposed in simulated scenarios, aiming at indicating the tracking capability derived from the adaptive adjustment of the coefficients of the blind equalizer. © 2005 IEEE.
