Lung cancer remains a significant global public health concern, being the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Despite recent medical advancements, the disease still has a high mortality rate, making early detection and treatment critical for improving patient outcomes. Accurate prediction of nodule growth is key to early lung cancer treatment, but current assessments offer unclear indications of future growth, leading physicians to recommend costly and anxiety-provoking follow-up appointments every 3 to 12 months. To address this need, this study develops an ensemble deep learning approach that combines demographic data with existing CT images to predict whether lung nodules will grow, potentially reducing unnecessary examinations and easing the burden on patients. Our study, conducted on 862 patients with 1004 nodules, produced promising preliminary results with Accuracy, Sensitivity, Precision, F1 Score, and AUC of 0.66, 0.66, 0.67, 0.66, and 0.71, respectively. The proposed method provides a promising support system to empower patients to make informed decisions about seeking medical attention and helps physicians facilitate early treatment regimens, leading to improved patient outcomes and potentially saving lives. © 2023 ACM.

Future wireless communication systems will evolve toward multi-functional integrated systems to improve spectrum utilization and reduce equipment sizes. A joint radar and communication (JRC) system, which can support simultaneous information transmission and target detection, has been regarded as a promising solution for emerging applications such as autonomous vehicles. In JRC, data security and privacy protection are critical issues. Thus, we first apply covert communication into JRC and propose a joint radar and covert communication (JRCC) system to achieve high spectrum utilization and secure data transmission simultaneously. In the JRCC system, an existence of sensitive data transmission is hidden from a maliciously observant warden. However, the performance of JRCC is restricted by severe signal propagation environment and hardware devices. Fortunately, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can change the signal propagation smartly to improve the networks performance with low cost. We first overview fundamental concepts of JRCC and RIS and then propose the RIS-aided JRCC system design. Furthermore, both covert communication and radar performance metrics are investigated and a game theory-based covert rate optimization scheme is designed to achieve secure communication. Dual-encoder structure successfully utilizes two language-specific encoders (LSEs) for code-switching speech recognition. Because LSEs are initialized by two pre-trained language-specific models (LSMs), the dual-encoder structure can exploit sufficient monolingual data and capture the individual language attributes. However, most existing methods have no language constraints on LSEs and underutilize language-specific knowledge of LSMs. In this paper, we propose a language-specific characteristic assistance (LSCA) method to mitigate the above problems. Specifically, during training, we introduce two language-specific losses as language constraints and generate corresponding language-specific targets for them. During decoding, we take the decoding abilities of LSMs into account by combining the output probabilities of two LSMs and the mixture model to obtain the final predictions. Experiments show that either the training or decoding method of LSCA can improve the model's performance. Furthermore, the best result can obtain up to 15.4% relative error reduction on the code-switching test set by combining the training and decoding methods of LSCA. Moreover, the system can process code-switching speech recognition tasks well without extra shared parameters or even retraining based on two pre-trained LSMs by using our method. We propose an on-chip fiber-based quantum transducer to convert microwave photons into optical-telecommunication-band photons. The device consists of a coplanar-waveguide microwave resonator and a pair of coupled optical cavities integrated into a rare-earth-doped fiber. The microwave resonator is formed by two aluminum strips deposited onto the cladding of the fiber, whose diameter has been etched down to approximately 8μm. We study the conversion process using the cavity electro-optic formalism for a system operating at liquid-helium temperature (around 4 K), as well as using a three-wave mixing approach for operation at millikelvin temperatures achievable in a dilution refrigerator. Both methods predict that unity conversion efficiency could be achievable with realistically achievable experimental parameters. The proposed device acts as a quantum transducer for coherent microwave-to-optical conversion, which has great promise for application in all-fiber integrated quantum devices for quantum information processing.

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly utilized in healthcare applications. However, their deployment in clinical practice raises significant safety concerns, including the potential spread of harmful information. This study systematically assesses the vulnerabilities of seven LLMs to three advanced black-box jailbreaking techniques within medical contexts. To quantify the effectiveness of these techniques, we propose an automated and domain-adapted agentic evaluation pipeline. Experiment results indicate that leading commercial and open-source LLMs are highly vulnerable to medical jailbreaking attacks. To bolster model safety and reliability, we further investigate the effectiveness of Continual Fine-Tuning (CFT) in defending against medical adversarial attacks. Our findings underscore the necessity for evolving attack methods evaluation, domain-specific safety alignment, and LLM safety-utility balancing. This research offers actionable insights for advancing the safety and reliability of AI clinicians, contributing to ethical and effective AI deployment in healthcare. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

Exponential Asymptotics using Numerical Rational Approximation in Linear Differential Equations

MSC Codes 30E15, 34E15, 34M30, 41A20Singularly-perturbed ordinary differential equations often exhibit Stokes’ phenomenon, which describes the appearance and disappearance of oscillating exponentially small terms across curves in the complex plane known as Stokes curves. These curves originate at singular points in the leading-order solution to the differential equation. In many important problems, it is impossible to obtain a closed-form expression for these leading-order solutions, and it is therefore challenging to locate these singular points. We present evidence that the analytic leading-order solution of a linear differential equation can be replaced with a rational approximation based on a numerical leading-order solution using the adaptive Antoulas-Anderson (AAA) method. We show that the subsequent exponential asymptotic analysis accurately predicts the exponentially small behaviour present in the solution. We explore the limitations of this approach, and show that for sufficiently small values of the asymptotic parameter, this approach breaks down;however, the range of validity may be extended by increasing the number of poles in the rational approximation. We finish by presenting a related nonlinear problem and discussing the challenges that arise when attempting to apply this method to nonlinear problems. © 2023, CC BY.

Background Rare diseases can be difficult to diagnose due to limited patient data and broad genetic diversity. Despite the advances in variant prioritization tools, many rare disease cases remain undiagnosed. While large language models (LLMs) have performed well in medical exams, their accuracy in diagnosing rare genetic diseases has not yet been evaluated. Methods To identify causal genes for genetic diseases, we benchmarked various LLMs for gene prioritization. We employed multi-agent and Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) classification approaches to identify patient case groups based on phenotypes categorizing them into different levels of solvability. To address LLM limitations in ranking large gene sets, we used a divide-and-conquer strategy to break down the ranking task into smaller subsets. Mini-batching inputs and limiting the number of generated tokens improved efficiency. Results In its vanilla form, GPT-4 consistently outperformed the other LLMs with an accuracy around 30%. Multi-agent and HPO classification approaches aided us in distinguishing between confidently-solved and challenging cases. In addition, we observed bias towards well-studied genes and input order sensitivity which are drawbacks of LLMs in disease-causal gene prioritization. Our divide-and-conquer strategy enhanced accuracy by overcoming positional and gene frequency biases in literature. This framework, based on benchmarking insights and novel techniques, significantly optimizes the overall process when identifying disease-causal genes for genetic diseases when compared to our baseline evaluation, and thereby better enables the development of targeted diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
