Phenomena investigated by scientists changed in quality, structure, and complexity since the dawn of XX century, moving from problems of simplicity into the organized-complexity domain. These phenomena contain almost always a living entity as one of its interacting parts. In the same historical period, scientific knowledge accumulated rapidly, and the education of scientific researchers embraced an ever-greater specialization, driven by the volume of accumulated knowledge, the proliferation of fields of interest and the "optimization" of training with respect to quantity and regularity. Consequently, scientific fields became more and more isolated, generating jargons and specificities in reasoning and application of the scientific method. This deeply contrasts with the present necessities of Humanity where the challenges, stemming from complex phenomena spreading over great spatial extensions, can only be mastered from a multi-disciplinary perspective. This work addresses the problem of how to turn a scattered scientific community into a meaningful mosaic of immense intellectual power. Difficulties and necessities in the communication between people educated in different disciplines are exposed using cybernetic, system, and communication concepts. It throws initial light in the possibilities and efficacy of multi-disciplinary scientific endeavors. It starts looking backwards into how communication among scientists and between scientists and non-scientists possibly occurred since the scientific revolution. It settles a framework to discuss problems related to trans-disciplinary communication in general, focusing on multi-disciplinary scientific research. The framework is constructed by pinning-down terminology and clarifying, polishing, and adapting a few intellectual tools from system and communication sciences, exemplifying how they may be employed. © 2023 Proceedings of World Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics, WMSCI. Rapid development of internet and technologies has contributed much to the quality of human's daily life. One of the breakthrough innovations is the implementation of the video streaming platform distributed over internet. With the resurgence of online video streaming platform, sharing video has never been easier. Therefore, users can easily share, comment, and like other video that different users uploaded. Brand awareness and customer trust could be significantly enhanced by means of short form videos as elements of online user experiences. Nowadays, there are many short form video streaming platforms on the internet like Instagram Reels and TikTok. This paper discusses the importance of user experience on Instagram Reels and TikTok. Every application needs to have some uniqueness so they can stand out and keep retention of their users. The User Experience Honeycomb was utilized in the form of quantitative research as a factor the user experience influencing on the user satisfaction. The major factors effecting user satisfaction were identified to help Instagram Reels and TikTok improve their user experience.

Exchange-correlation potential built on the derivative discontinuity of electron density

Electronic structures are fully determined by the exchange-correlation (XC) potential. In this work, we develop a new method to construct reliable XC potentials by properly mixing the exact exchange and the local density approximation potentials in real space. The spatially dependent mixing parameter is derived based on the derivative discontinuity of electron density and is first-principle. We derived the equations for solving the mixing parameter and proposed an approximation to simplify these equations. Based on this approximation, this new method gives reasonable predictions for the ionization energies, fundamental gaps, and singlet-triplet energy differences for various molecular systems. The impact of the approximation on the constructed XC potentials is examined, and it is found that the quality of the XC potentials can be further improved by removing the approximation. This work demonstrates that the derivative discontinuity of electron density is a promising constraint for constructing high-quality XC potentials. © 2024, CC BY.

Language differences are one of the obstacles to communication. Especially if you use certain regional languages such as Banjar Language. Banjar Language is the mother tongue used by the Banjar tribe in South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. South Kalimantan is known as an area that has promising tourism potential and is the main gateway of the new nation's capital city. This causes many tourists to visit (overtourism). Tourists will face obstacles when communicating with local residents of Banjar. The purpose of this research is to produce a prototype of a tool in the form of a wearable technology-based translator application, using speech recognition with Python programming, then investigate the usability and sustainability opportunities of the prototype that has been made. A total of 200 respondents have been involved consisting of domestic tourists and local residents of Banjar, these respondents were involved in exploring needs and when evaluating usability. The results show that the prototype that has been made provides usability and is feasible to proceed to the implementation stage, as a means to help tourists from the archipelago and local residents of Banjar to communicate and also transact. © 2022 IEEE.

Compounding is a common type of word formation extensively studied in linguistics and cognitive psychology. A growing line of research suggests that the lexicon supports efficient communication by balancing informativeness and simplicity. We propose that the formation of novel compounds reflects a similar tradeoff between informativeness and word length. We formalize this hypothesis in information-theoretic terms and develop a computational procedure to evaluate our hypothesis on English noun compounds that emerged over the past century. We find that attested compounds achieve more efficient tradeoffs between informativeness and word length than do alternative word forms. Our work demonstrates how word formation and compositionality can be connected with information-theoretic approaches to the design of the lexicon. © 2022 The Author(s). Today, streaming, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are being some of the main drivers to accelerate process automation in various companies. These technologies are often connected to critical tasks, requiring reliable and scalable environments. Although Fog computing has been on the rise as an alternative to address those challenges, we perceive a gap in the literature related to adaptability on the number of resources on both cloud and fog layers. Multiple studies suggest different Cloud-Fog architectures for IoT implementations, but not thoroughly addressing elasticity control mechanisms. In this context, this article presents ProFog as a proactive elasticity model for IoT-based Cloud-Fog architectures. ProFog uses the ARIMA prediction model to anticipate load behaviors, so triggering scaling actions as close to when they are required as possible. This strategy allows the delivery of new resources before reaching an overloaded or underloaded state, benefiting performance, and energy saving. We developed a ProFog prototype that showed an improvement of 11.21% in energy consumption in favor of ProFog. © 2021 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda. All rights reserved.

A NEW HOPE: Contextual Privacy Policies for Mobile Applications and An Approach Toward Automated Generation

Privacy policies have emerged as the predominant approach to conveying privacy notices to mobile application users. In an effort to enhance both readability and user engagement, the concept of contextual privacy policies (CPPs) has been proposed by researchers. The aim of CPPs is to fragment privacy policies into concise snippets, displaying them only within the corresponding contexts within the application’s graphical user interfaces (GUIs). In this paper, we first formulate CPP in mobile application scenario, and then present a novel multimodal framework, named SEEPRIVACY, specifically designed to automatically generate CPPs for mobile applications. This method uniquely integrates vision-based GUI understanding with privacy policy analysis, achieving 0.88 precision and 0.90 recall to detect contexts, as well as 0.98 precision and 0.96 recall in extracting corresponding policy segments. A human evaluation shows that 77% of the extracted privacy policy segments were perceived as well-aligned with the detected contexts. These findings suggest that SEEPRIVACY could serve as a significant tool for bolstering user interaction with, and understanding of, privacy policies. Furthermore, our solution has the potential to make privacy notices more accessible and inclusive, thus appealing to a broader demographic. State-of-the-art sign language generation frameworks lack expressivity and naturalness which is the result of only focusing on manual signs, neglecting the affective, grammatical, and semantic functions of facial expressions. The purpose of this work is to augment semantic representation of sign language through grounding facial expressions. We study the effect of modeling the relationship between text, gloss, and facial expressions on the performance of the sign generation systems. In particular, we propose a Dual Encoder Transformer able to generate manual signs as well as facial expressions by capturing the similarities and differences found in the text and sign gloss annotation. We take into consideration the role of facial muscle activity to express intensities of manual signs by being the first to employ facial action units in sign language generation. We perform a series of experiments showing that our proposed model improves the quality of automatically generated sign language. © 2023 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Students’ interactions while solving problems in learning environments (i.e. log data) are often used to support students’ learning. For example, researchers use log data to develop systems that can provide students with personalized problem recommendations based on their knowledge level. However, anomalies in the students’ log data, such as cheating to solve programming problems, could introduce a hidden bias in the log data. As a result, these systems may provide inaccurate problem recommendations, and therefore, defeat their purpose. Classical cheating detection methods, such as MOSS, can be used to detect code plagiarism. However, these methods cannot detect other abnormal events such as a student gaming a system with multiple attempts of similar solutions to a particular programming problem. This paper presents a preliminary study to analyze log data with anomalies. The goal of our work is to overcome the abnormal instances when modeling personalizable recommendations in programming learning environments. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Serverless computing, also known as Function as a Service, is a new paradigm that aims to separate the user of the platform from details about any infrastructure deployment. The problem lies in the fact that all the current Serverless platforms require the user to specify at least the needed memory usage for their Serverless offerings. Here we have a paradox since the users must be involved in technical issues to run their applications efficiently, both in terms of execution time and financial costs. To the best of our knowledge, the state-of-the-art lacks on providing studies regarding the best memory size for a particular application setting. In this context, this work presents Memoryless, a computational methodology that is in charge of removing the completion of memory limits by the user when launching Serverless demands. To accomplish this, we introduce in the literature a twopass algorithm composed of a microbenchmark where users inform simple application parameters (first pass) and receive from the hypervisor the memory required to run their demands. In addition to user abstraction, financial cost also drives our research, since commonly this metric is directly proportional to the selected memory size. We implemented Memoryless using NodeJS, Kubeless, and Kubernetes. The result confirms that the proposed methodology is capable of lowering the memory needs to run an application while maintaining expected execution times. This benefits both cloud administrators (who can run more Serverless demands for different users in parallel) and cloud users, who will pay less on using the cloud, so exploring better the pay-as-you-go policy. © 2021 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.
