Do Leadership Styles Influence Employee Information Systems Security Intention? A Study of the Banking Industry

The banking industry is highly prone to Information Systems (IS) security breaches from outside organizations and inside organizations. There are processes to monitor, detect, measure, and prevent IS security threats from an outside organization. However, inside organization threats to IS security are very challenging to monitor and detect, especially employee-related. The paper aims to understand how leadership plays a vital role in employee information systems security intention in the banking industry. Therefore, research applied full-range leadership style theory (FRLT) to assess the role of leadership style on employees’ information systems security intention. The study collects 517 responses from non-managerial bank employees from Brazilian banks using questionnaires and tested the theoretical relationship using partial least square structural equation modeling. The findings reveal that transformational leadership has a positive impact on the development of employee information systems security intention, whereas passive leadership harms employee intention toward information systems security. In addition to that results also show that age, education level, and work experience have moderating effects on employee intention toward information systems security. The research will help the banking industry to influence employee IS security intention through proactive and transformational leadership. In addition, it will also help leaders to understand employee intention toward information systems security aspects. This paper introduces an approach for designing gain-scheduled dynamic output feedback controllers for continuous-time Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) systems. The aim is to improve transient response by incorporating both D-stability and H∞ criteria into the synthesis conditions. We achieve this by employing changes of variables and congruence transformations, which lead to new synthesis conditions expressed as linear matrix inequalities. Additional fine-tuned scalar parameters can be used to enhance further the controller performance in terms of less conservative H∞ guaranteed costs. To assess the effectiveness of our proposed synthesis procedure, we conduct computational experiments in the context of a microinverter-based distributed power generation system. These experiments take into account real-world operational characteristics, providing a comprehensive evaluation of our approach. The results demonstrate that the designed controller effectively ensures the desired closed-loop system behavior, even when dealing with state noise and discretization errors originating from digital implementation. © 2024 The Franklin Institute

Atomic excitation delocalization at the clean to disordered interface in a chirally-coupled atomic array

In one-dimensional quantum emitter systems, the dynamics of atomic excitations are influenced by the collective coupling between emitters through photon-mediated dipole-dipole interactions. By introducing positional disorders in a portion of the atomic array, we investigate the delocalization phenomena at the interface between the disordered and clean zones. The excitation is initialized as symmetric Dicke states in the disordered zone, and several measures are used to quantify the excitation localization. We first use population imbalance and half-chain entropy to investigate the excitation dynamics under time evolutions, and further investigate the crossover of excitation localization to delocalization via the gap ratio from the eigenspectrum in the reciprocal coupling case. In particular, we study the participation ratio of the whole chain and the photon loss ratio between both ends of the atomic chain, which can be used to quantify the delocalization crossover in the nonreciprocal coupling cases. Furthermore, by increasing the overall size or the ratio of the disordered zone under a fixed number of the whole chain, we observe that excitation localization occurs at a smaller disorder strength in the former case, while in the latter, facilitation of the delocalization appears when a significant ratio of the clean zone to disordered zone is applied. Our results can reveal the competition between the clean zone and the disordered zone sizes on localization phenomenon, give insights to nonequilibrium dynamics in the emitter-waveguide interface, and provide potential applications in quantum information processing.

Statistical physics of deep neural networks: Initialization toward optimal channels

In deep learning, neural networks serve as noisy channels between input data and its latent representation. This perspective naturally relates deep learning with the pursuit of constructing channels with optimal performance in information transmission and representation. While considerable efforts are concentrated on realizing optimal channel properties during network optimization, we study a frequently overlooked possibility that neural networks can be initialized toward optimal channels. Our theory, consistent with experimental validation, identifies primary mechanics underlying this unknown possibility and suggests intrinsic connections between statistical physics and deep learning. Unlike the conventional theories that characterize neural networks applying the classic mean-field approximation, we offer analytic proof that this extensively applied simplification scheme is not appropriate in studying neural networks as information channels. To fill this gap, we develop a restricted mean-field framework applicable for characterizing the limiting behaviors of information propagation in neural networks without strong assumptions on inputs. Based on it, we propose an analytic theory to prove that mutual information maximization is realized between inputs and propagated signals when neural networks are initialized at dynamic isometry, a case where information transmits via norm-preserving mappings. These theoretical predictions are validated by experiments on real neural networks, suggesting the robustness of our theory against finite-size effects. Finally, we analyze our findings with information bottleneck theory to confirm the precise relations among dynamic isometry, mutual information maximization, and optimal channel properties in deep learning. Our work may lay a cornerstone for promoting deep learning in terms of network initialization and suggest general statistical physics mechanisms underlying diverse deep learning techniques.

The Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard incorporates a number of new tools to significantly improve the coding efficiency over its predecessor, the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), at the cost of increased complexity. Hence, to meet real-time and energy efficiency requirements, portable devices must adopt techniques to effectively reduce the VVC complexity, including customized hardware accelerators. This work presents a low-energy hardware architecture design for the Fractional Motion Estimation (FME), which is amongst the most critical VVC and HEVC encoder steps. The proposed architecture reduces the FME complexity by operating over a subset of candidates selected to reduce the energy and area demands without compromising too much the coding efficiency. At the average BD-Rate of only 0.34% and 0.28% for the Low Delay with P slices only (LD-P) and Random Access (RA) configurations, respectively, the proposed architecture achieves a 75.5% energy consumption reduction when compared to a baseline FME architecture while occupying only 36.6 % of the area.

Ultra-Reliable Device-Centric Uplink Communications in Airborne Networks: A Spatiotemporal Analysis

This paper proposes an ultra-reliable device-centric uplink (URDC-UL) communication scheme for airborne networks. In particular, base stations (BSs) are mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that travel to schedule UL transmissions and collect data from devices. To attain an ultra-reliable unified device-centric performance, the UL connection is established when the UAV-BS is hovering at the nearest possible distance from the scheduled device. The performance of the proposed URDC-UL scheme is benchmarked against a stationary UAV-centric uplink (SUC-UL) scheme where the devices are scheduled to communicate to UAV-BSs that are continuously hovering at static locations. Utilizing stochastic geometry and queueing theory, novel spatiotemporal mathematical models are developed, which account for the UAV-BS spatial densities, mobility, altitude, antenna directivity, ground-to-air channel, and temporal traffic, among other factors. The results demonstrate the sensitivity of the URDC-UL scheme to the ratio between hovering and traveling time. In particular, the hovering to traveling time ratio should be carefully adjusted to maximize the harvested performance gains for the URDC-UL scheme in terms of link reliability, transmission rate, energy efficiency, and delay. Exploiting the URDC-UL scheme allows IoT devices to minimize transmission power while maintaining unified reliable transmission. Membrane technology holds significant potential for water treatment and air dehumidification. However, current membranes are constrained by limitations in water flux and pollutant rejection. This study introduces a novel approach to enhance the performance of microfiltration membranes by incorporating Ti3C2Tx MXene nanomaterials into polyethersulfone to fabricate a series of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Comprehensive characterization through SEM, TEM, XRD, and AFM reveals enhanced morphology, hydrophilicity and mechanical robustness. These improvements directly contribute to performance metrics that surpass the control PES membrane reach pure water of 2280 LMH/bar and an oil rejection of 98%. The fortified mechanical properties further enable the membranes to operate effectively under elevated pressures, reducing both flux degradation and operational failures. Significantly, the study marks the first application of MXene-based membranes in air dehumidification, with the MMM membranes exhibiting a water vapor permeance (WVP) of 18,100 GPU, compared to 15,900 GPU for the control PES membranes. These advancements affirm PES-MXene MMMs as scalable, high-performance solutions with new avenues for application in water treatment and air dehumidification. © 2023, The Authors. Molecular dynamics simulations offer detailed insights into atomic motions but face timescale limitations. Enhanced sampling methods have addressed these challenges but even with machine learning, they often rely on pre-selected expert-based features. In this work, we present the Graph Neural Network-State Predictive Information Bottleneck (GNN-SPIB) framework, which combines graph neural networks and the State Predictive Information Bottleneck to automatically learn low-dimensional representations directly from atomic coordinates. Tested on three benchmark systems, our approach predicts essential structural, thermodynamic and kinetic information for slow processes, demonstrating robustness across diverse systems. The method shows promise for complex systems, enabling effective enhanced sampling without requiring pre-defined reaction coordinates or input features. © 2024, CC BY.

Photo-identification (photo-id) is one of the main non-invasive capture-recapture methods utilised by marine researchers for monitoring cetacean (dolphin, whale, and porpoise) populations. This method has historically been performed manually resulting in high workload and cost due to the vast number of images collected. Recently automated aids have been developed to help speed-up photo-id, although they are often disjoint in their processing and do not utilise all available identifying information. Work presented in this paper aims to create a fully automatic photo-id aid capable of providing most likely matches based on all available information without the need for data pre-processing such as cropping. This is achieved through a pipeline of computer vision models and post-processing techniques aimed at detecting cetaceans in unedited field imagery before passing them downstream for individual level catalogue matching. The system is capable of handling previously uncatalogued individuals and flagging these for investigation thanks to catalogue similarity comparison. We evaluate the system against multiple real-life photo-id catalogues, achieving mAP@IOU[0.5] = 0.91, 0.96 for the task of dorsal fin detection on catalogues from Tanzania and the UK respectively and 83.1, 97.5% top-10 accuracy for the task of individual classification on catalogues from the UK and USA. © 2022 IEEE.
