Maximum likelihood estimation is an essential tool in the procedure to impute missing data in climate/weather applications. By defining a particular statistical model, the maximum likelihood estimation can be used to understand the underlying structure of given geospatial data. The Gaussian random field has been widely used to describe geospatial data, as one of the most popular models under the hood of maximum likelihood estimation. Computation of Gaussian log-likelihood demands operations on a dense symmetric positive definite matrix, often parameterized by the Matérn correlation function. This computation of the log-likelihood requires $\mathcal{O}(n^{2})$ storage and $\mathcal{O}(n^{3})$ operations, which can be a huge task considering that the number of geographical locations, $n$ , now commonly reaches into the millions. However, despite its appealing theoretical properties, the assumptions of Gaussianity may be unrealistic since real data often show signs of skewness or have some extreme values. Herein, we consider the Tukey ${g-}$ and $-h$ (TGH) random field as an example of a non-Gaussian random field that shows more robustness in modeling geospatial data by including two more parameters to incorporate skewness and heavy tail features in the model. This work provides the first HPC implementation of the TGH random field's inference on parallel hardware architectures. Using task-based programming models associated with dynamic runtime systems, our implementation leverages the high concurrency of current parallel systems. This permits to run the exact log-likelihood evaluation of the Tukey g-and-h (TGH) random fields for a decent number of geospatial locations. To tackle large-scale problems, we provide additionally an implementation of the given model using two different low-rank approximations. It is crucial for the community including the government and health workers to collaborate to halt the spread of Covid-19. The idea of developing the mobile application surfaced from the previous findings. Previous researches have implemented and developed different features to better the application. The development of a mobile application to provide a platform that will assist people with information regarding patients that are around the perimeter of users to help notify them. With the help of the notification, users will be able to avoid the chances of them being in contact with the people (ODP), patients that are under surveillance (PDP) confirmed patients. All patients including ODP and PDP are required to have the application therefore, the Minister of Health will be able to track the geolocation of patients. Moreover, people will be able to be aware of patients that are around their perimeter. Therefore, with the help of the application, it will be able to help assist the community for them to be aware of and to be able to avoid being in contact with the infected patients. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Atomic excitation delocalization at the clean to disordered interface in a chirally-coupled atomic array

In one-dimensional quantum emitter systems, the dynamics of atomic excitations are influenced by the collective coupling between emitters through photon-mediated dipole-dipole interactions. By introducing positional disorders in a portion of the atomic array, we investigate the delocalization phenomena at the interface between disordered zone and clean zone. The excitation is initialized as symmetric Dicke states in the disordered zone, and several measures are used to quantify the excitation localization. We first use population imbalance and half-chain entropy to investigate the excitation dynamics under time evolutions, and further investigate the crossover of excitation localization to delocalization via the gap ratio from the eigenspectrum in the reciprocal coupling case. In particular, we study the participation ratio of the whole chain and the photon loss ratio between both ends of the atomic chain, which can be used to quantify the delocalization crossover in the non-reciprocal coupling cases. Furthermore, by increasing the overall size or the ratio of the disordered zone under a fixed number of the whole chain, we observe that excitation localization occurs at a smaller disorder strength in the former case, while in the latter, a facilitation of the delocalization appears when a significant ratio of clean zone to disordered zone is applied. Our results can reveal the competition between the clean zone and the disordered zone sizes on localization phenomenon, give insights to non-equilibrium dynamics in the emitter-waveguide interface, and provide potential applications in quantum information processing. Many industrial and engineering problems are transformed into optimization problems and solved using various numerical based methods. One of the frequently used method is the Steepest descent algorithm which converge to the solution in only one iteration, given the current point and provided the quadratic function is positive definite. However, this method is not suitable for large scale functions because of lack of gradient information and high computational cost. This study aims to suggest a new conjugate gradient algorithm for motion control of robotic manipulators and unconstrained optimization models. The convergence result of the new algorithm would be discussed under some suitable conditions. Computational simulations are carried out on the discrete-time kinematics equation of a two-joint planar robot manipulator to illustrates the efficiency of the algorithm. The algorithm was further extended to unconstrained optimization problems in addition to motion control of robotic manipulators. Preliminary results prove that the new algorithm is efficient compared to the existing CG algorithm. The comparisons are made using the set of 50 standard benchmark functions including number of iterations and CPU time. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Role of simulation models in understanding the generation of behavior in C. elegans

There has been a proliferation of studies using simulation models to achieve a system-level understanding of behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans. Here I discuss the different aims of these modeling approaches and review examples of each in the context of locomotion and spatial navigation in the worm. I argue that as the focus shifts from understanding sensorimotor transformations to understanding neuromechanical instantiations for how behaviors are generated, simulation models will become a more integral part of the experiment–theory cycle. I discuss the insights that simulation modeling provides that complement information obtained from experimental discovery methods. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most common injuries associated with sports. Knee osseous morphology can play a role in increased knee instability. Our hypothesis is that the morphological features of the knee, as seen in knee osseous morphology, can contribute to increased knee instability and, thus, increase the likelihood of ACL tear. To test this relationship, it is necessary to segment the femur and tibia bones and extract relevant imaging features. However, manual annotation of 3D medical images, such as on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, can be a time-consuming and challenging task. In this work, we propose an automated pipeline for creating pseudo-masks of the femur and tibia bones in knee MRI. Our approach involves unsupervised segmentation and deep learning models to classify ACL integrity (intact or torn). Our results demonstrate a high agreement between the automated pseudo-masks and a radiologist's manual segmentation, which also leads to comparable AUC values for the ACL integrity classification. © 2023 SPIE.

A nanophotonic waveguide coupled with an atomic array forms one of the strongly-coupled quantum interfaces to showcase many fascinating collective features of quantum dynamics. In particular for a dissimilar array of two different interparticle spacings with competing photon-mediated dipole-dipole interactions and directionality of couplings, we study the steady-state phases of atomic excitations under a weakly-driven condition of laser field. We identify a partial set of steady-state phases of the driven system composed of combinations of steady-state solutions in a homogeneous array. We also reveal an intricate role of the atom at the interface of the dissimilar array in determining the steady-state phases and find an alteration in the dichotomy of the phases strongly associated with steady-state distributions with crystalline orders. We further investigate in detail the interaction-induced depletion in half of the dissimilar array. This blockaded region results from two contrasting interparticle spacings near the reciprocal coupling regime, which is evidenced from the analytical solutions under the reciprocal coupling. Our results can provide insights in the driven-dissipative quantum phases of atomic excitations with nonreciprocal couplings and pave the avenues toward quantum simulations of exotic many-body states essential for quantum information applications. Using computational design tools to create meaningful digital representations of architectural heritage delivers both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, digital tools aid the fast and detailed three-dimensional modeling of architectural elements. On the other hand, these models do not sufficiently document the materials and techniques of making. This research proposes a workflow to use computational design tools to analyze historic Anatolian brick elements while integrating their geometry, construction, and part-whole relations in parametric modeling and robotic fabrication processes. Our approach demonstrates a correlation between the design of the surface pattern and material application in historical bricklaying. The proposed workflow can be applied to formalize implicit design knowledge, integrating it into the digital environment and numeric control production codes. This holistic approach to heritage prioritizes both the tangible aspects, such as form and material, and intangible aspects such as the knowledge base of applied techniques. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

A linguistic approach to short sentences keywords identification for a question answering system

One of the aims of question answering systems is to identify which words are more relevant to understand the users' needs. Known approaches involve the identification of the users' intentions through a set of previously built related sentences. Some limitations of these approaches are the lack of flexibility and limited selection options. In this paper, we present an approach based on computational linguistics to identify the keywords in short sentences for question answering systems. The main contribution of our approach is related to the new way we use the information generated by the natural language processing tools to identify the keywords of the sentences, by profoundly exploring the linguistic information to select the keywords of the questions. Besides, we emphasise the generalisation and the simplicity of our algorithm. The efficiency of our method was proved by the performance of 0.9776 in precision, recall value of 0.9962, resulting in an F1 score of 0.9868 reached in the validation experiment using QALD-7 as a gold standard. The global requirement for sustainable energy supply to enhance industrial productivity and reduce production costs has focused researchers’ attention to renewable energy in recent years. Solar energy mitigates the dangers connected with the use of fossil fuels in electricity generation. This work is set to evaluate the heat transmission capacities of Williamson hybrid nanofluid flow across a flat plate with viscous dissipation and heat source. The mathematical model explaining the flow interaction of Williamson hybrid nanofluid, combining viscous dissipation, heat source, and temperature-variation thermal conductivity and viscosity, is created using conservation laws. The specified system of non-linear coupled partial differential equations undergoes non-similarity transformation. The resulting non-dimensional model is solved using the bivariate spectral weighted residual method. The accuracy of the method is proven by comparing obtained results with those in the literature, and a good agreement is observed. Graphs are utilized to explain the thermophysical properties that are being considered. The results show that the fluid temperature rises when there is a source of heating and viscous dissipation. The velocity and the fluid parameter (We) have an inverse connection, whereas the temperature of the fluid has the opposite impact. Moreover, when nanoparticles are present, the thermal boundary layer rises along with the nanoparticles, thickening the velocity boundary layer and decreasing fluid velocity. Findings also show that for the Vd∈[0.1,0.5], the skin drag force and Nusselt number retard by 0.64%,14.06% for the shrinking sheet and 0.21%,6.57% for the stretching sheet respectively. In the same vein, an 100% surge in the porosity parameter escalate the skin friction coefficient by 19.13% and 26.91% and the Nusselt number by 4.92% and 2.06% respectively for both the contracting and elastic sheet.
