This work explores a set of approximate adders (COPY adder, error-tolerant adder - ETA, lower-part OR adder - LOA, truncation - Trunc, and approximate parallel prefix adder - AxPPA) to enhance a VLSI design for ECG signal preprocessing based on Pan-Tompkins algorithm (AxPTA) to improve energy efficiency and QRS complex detection. Validation with the MIT-BIH database confirms that the AxPTA design maintains excellent sensitivity and positive predictivity with reduced energy consumption and circuit area. The AxPTA with AxPPA achieves a 10.22% reduction in circuit size and saves 85.06% energy, with an acceptable 1.32% precision deviation. These results suggest that the AxPPA significantly boosts energy efficiency in the AxPTA design for ECG analysis, supporting the development of portable devices for continuous heart monitoring and cardiovascular disease prevention.

This work introduces a combined version of approximate adders (AxAs), joining approximate parallel prefix adders (AxPPA) with other AxAs from the literature (COPY, Truncation - TRUNC, and lower-part OR adder - LOA). We call this approach M-AxPPA (modified approximate parallel prefix adder) and investigate three specific versions: M-AxPPA-COPY, M-AxPPA-TRUNC, and M-AxPPA-LOA. We evaluate 315 different configurations, comparing our novel M-AxPPA to other AxAs proposed in the literature. We present pseudocode examples and investigate the accuracy quality, incorporating metrics like SSIM, NCC, MAE, MRE, and MRED. Additionally, we perform a trade-off analysis between accuracy quality and logic synthesis outcomes, underscoring the advantages of our M-AxPPA, notably the outstanding accuracy achieved by M-AxPPA-LOA (approaching 100%), with a substantial energy-saving.

In recent years, 3D point cloud content has gained attention thanks to applications such as virtual, augmented or mixed reality, real-time immersive communications, and autonomous driving systems. However, raw point clouds comprise large amount of data, and compression is mandatory to allow efficient transmission and storage. The MPEG group proposed the standard called Geometry-based Point Cloud Compression (G-PCC) implemented in the Test Condition Category 1 and 3 (TMC13) software. TMC13 can significantly reduce the amount of data in static point clouds, but requires a high computational cost making real-time compression unfeasible, especially for devices with limited computational power and energy resources. This paper presents a computational cost and coding efficiency evaluation of the G-PCC coding tools. Two main contributions are presented: first, a coding efficiency analysis of different G-PCC tools; second, a complexity profiling of the G-PCC coding steps aimed at understanding the computational effort distribution. This work provides the first complexity assessment of G-PCC. The presented results can help in the proposal of complexity reduction approaches for the development of more efficient versions of G-PCC for real-time purposes.

Studies have been indicating the use of digital resources for interventions with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), especially when it comes to supporting communication and social interaction. However, there is research that suggests the use of digital environments not only in these aspects but also to assist them in their academic knowledge, such as in their mathematical skills, specifically related to geometric thinking. From this context, Active Methodologies point to various ways of rethinking traditional teaching, one of them being gamification, which can be understood as the use of game elements in non-game situations. Gamification has shown significant benefits for this audience, proving to be an effective tool to aid in the development and learning of these individuals. Therefore, this article in its complete form presents an excerpt from a doctoral thesis that seeks to understand the geometric thinking of nine autistic participants through gamified activities in their real mode. The research is divided into two stages: the first stage involves a preliminary survey with five teachers through structured interviews, aiming to investigate the demand for gamified activities for students with ASD, as well as indicating possibilities for such activities. From the Discursive Textual Analysis (DTA) of these interviews, three categories emerged: opportunities, skills, and limitations. As for the second stage, conducted with nine participants, who are students with ASD, interventions were carried out with these activities in their real mode, which will be implemented digitally later. Through the researcher's observation analysis, based on recorded videos of the interventions, three subcategories related to the initial categories can be identified: potential interactions (opportunities);strategies for geometric thinking (skills);and gamification in the real mode (limitations). 3D point clouds are increasingly used in applications, such as 3D remapping, cultural heritage preservation, and virtual/augmented reality. Given their large data volume, efficient compression is crucial. The MPEG group has introduced two standards: Geometry-based Point Cloud Compression (G-PCC), for static and dynamic-acquired point clouds, and Video-based Point Cloud Compression (V-PCC), specifically for dynamic point clouds. Although both approaches achieve effective data reduction, their high computational complexity limits real-time use, especially on resource-constrained devices. This paper analyzes the computational cost and coding efficiency of G-PCC and V-PCC, identifying the most time-consuming steps. In G-PCC, the Octree-RAHT configuration offers the best trade-off between efficiency and encoding time, with recoloring alone accounting for up to 70%. In V-PCC, video encoding dominates, consuming about 92% of the total time. These findings lay the groundwork for future optimizations to reduce the complexity of more efficient implementations. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

The purpose of this research is to present an improved project method and the results obtained in its use for the application work of the electrical machines course of an electronic engineering program of the Pedro Ruiz Gallo National University of Lambayeque in Peru. Previously, from 2013 to 2018, the project method was used, and based on these experiences, a proj ect method was prepared with greater detail of the activities and deliverables in each phase of the method, the results are better information, planning and organization by part of the students and a better evaluation by the facilitator, who acts as a referee and not as a coach as in traditional vocational training. The improved project method that has been applied in the 2019-11 semester and completed the validation in the 2023 semesters, due to the COVID 19 quarantine in the years 2020 to 2022, no real application work was carried out. In order to train professionals with new skills, vocational training must be innovated with new teaching-learning modes, such as the project method. The projects carried out in 2019-11 gave 4 very good projects: Automotive alternator as direct current generator, DC generator based on a DC motor, Construction of a windshield wiper system, Construction of a single-phase induction motor;2 good projects and 5 regular projects. © 2024 IEEE.

This study evaluates an agent-based reinforcement learning framework for model-based testing (MBT). The framework's performance was assessed on three key metrics: effectiveness and efficiency in achieving model coverage objectives, the quantity and uniqueness of generated test cases, and code coverage. The results show improved metrics for the framework compared to traditional testers in model coverage evaluation and test case metrics. Specifically, the framework achieved higher effectiveness and efficiency, generating a higher average number of test cases with a substantial proportion of unique cases, indicating more diverse and thorough testing. Additionally, the framework, along with random and greedy testers, achieved over 70% coverage across branch, method, and line code metrics. The framework showed slightly higher values in method and line coverage compared to other testers. The evaluation highlights the use of agent-based reinforcement learning to support model-based testing in planning test case generation, exploring models using multiple strategies, and learning guided by testing metrics. Future work will focus on further refining the framework learning model, including error coverage evaluation, and testing its applicability across different software systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Under the increasingly complex and interconnected world we live in, data has become extremely valuable. Nevertheless, exploring even a simple database is not a trivial task, as it requires technical knowledge which many new and non-technical data users do not have. This task includes writing database queries to retrieve data, uncover insights, and exploit patterns. Furthermore, in large volumes of data, finding valuable data that matches a certain user’s purpose requirement is challenging, especially under restrictive time constraints. Typically, this task is manual, ad-hoc, and time-consuming. To address these challenges, researches have proposed tools to support data exploration tasks, especially by means of View Recommendation. However, current recommendation approaches require enumerating all candidate views that can be defined over an input database. In this work, we introduce a novel view recommendation method that leverages a human-in-the-loop approach to create, evaluate, and tailor views to match user intent. Our experimental evaluation on real-world data demonstrates that our approach suitably recommends views that capture multiple perspectives on the data at hand. © 2023 IEEE.

Robotic assembly of modular blocks has a great interest in multi-robotic studies in many disciplines. The existing studies primarily focus on context-specific tasks, especially in the self-assembly of robots, from an engineering perspective. However, considering a modular composition's entire design and fabrication process regarding mereological relationships is significant for the module's reuse in different pattern formations by mobile multi-robots. This study defines mobile robot swarms’ adaptability to the assembly-disassembly-reassembly (ADR) process to any-time change of the 3D pattern being assembled. Hence, the robot's manipulator needs to be compatible with picking up, carrying, attaching, and detaching the modules in the ADR process. This study questions the effects of the ADR process on manipulator development in multi-robotic systems. It aims to customize and develop manipulator systems beyond the existing gripper for multi-robot systems. Accordingly, it introduces a new conceptual understanding of manipulators’ taxonomy as friction-based and active and passive magnetic field-based end-effectors for the ADR process. Active indicates the use of electromagnets, whereas passive refers to using metal parts in the manipulator’s body. A physical experiment is conducted based on the above-stated taxonomies whose manipulators are printed in the Creality Ender3 and mounted to a mobile robot with a differential drive. The process is observed to discuss the introduced magnetic end-effectors, the system’s adaptability needs, and the pros and cons compared to the conventional gripper. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Towards to Characterization of Network Management Traffic in OpenStack-Based Clouds

OpenStack is versatile and popular, allowing full customization for creating private or public IaaS clouds. This work addresses a network traffic analysis and characterization for the management domain inside OpenStack clouds. We conduct an induced lifecycle to execute virtual machine (VM)-related tasks, measure the traffic, and identify the services behind the traffic generated by these operations. Also, we analyze the impact of different images of operating systems (OSs) and VM’s flavor in the measured traffic. Moreover, we observe that predicting the volume of network traffic from operations, such as creation and shelving instances of VMs, helps estimate bandwidth boundaries, avoiding bottlenecks, for example. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
