One major way that people engage in adaptive problem solving is by imitating others’ solutions. Prominent simulation models have found imperfect imitation advantageous, but the interactions between copying amount and other prevalent aspects of social learning strategies have been underexplored. Here, we explore the consequences for a group when its members engage in strategies with different degrees of copying, solving search problems of varying complexity, in different network topologies that affect the solutions visible to each member. Using a computational model of collective problem solving, we demonstrate that the advantage of partial copying is robust across these conditions, arising from its ability to maintain diversity. Partial copying delays convergence generally but especially in globally connected networks, which are typically associated with diversity loss, allowing more exploration of a problem space. We show that a moderate amount of diversity maintenance is optimal and strategies can be adjusted to find that sweet spot.

This paper, introduces an effective technique for correcting gaps and outliers in data and validates the approach by applying it to datasets with outlier zones drawn from three diverse contexts. Arithmetic operations are intrinsic to any embedded devices, and they usually have a significant impact on the circuit speed, area, and power consumption. Applications like video processing, digital signal processing, machine learning, among others, rely heavily on multipliers to execute their algorithms. Radix-2 m multipliers have been reported as one of the most power-efficient circuits. However, their architecture has not been explored nor optimized to improve the circuit quality. This work proposed two sign extension optimization techniques for these multipliers, aiming for better power efficiency and a smaller area. The baseline radix-4 (m=2) multiplier and its optimized versions were synthesized in a commercial 65nm technology to evaluate their performance. Results show that the optimized versions achieve power efficiency gains from 16.4% up to 78.6%, with circuit area reduction up to 49.2%.

The demographics in the Arab world are expected to go through a change in the coming decades. It is projected that the older population in Qatar will increase. Access to and use of information communication technology (ICT) by older persons and their caregivers has rarely been discussed. This study exposes the perspectives of the policy-level stakeholders and non-profit organizations working with older persons regarding the access and use of ICT. Through focus groups, the study investigates existing services and identifies the challenges encountered within the ICT Ecosystem. The study also attempts to explore their personal perspectives toward the access and use of older persons and their caregivers to ICT Thematic analysis was employed to capture the main themes emerging from exchanges with the stakeholders. Five themes emerged to stress the importance of existing efforts, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the extent of technology acceptance. The findings revealed the extent of partnership between the different institutes when providing the different services, conducting raising awareness activities, and training campaigns, and supporting the technology acceptance. The paper concludes by providing recommendations for stakeholders on ways to address the digital gap.
