Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines have emerged as highly effective strategies in the prophylaxis and treatment of diseases. mRNA design, a key to the success of mRNA vaccines, in-volves finding optimal codons and increasing secondary structure stability to lengthen mRNA half-life, ultimately enhancing protein expression. Despite receiving widespread attention, most methods primarily rely on manual design, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. While optimization approaches can alleviate this issue, existing methods still exhibit critical limitations caused by conflicts between codon usage and mRNA structural stability, compounded by the vast design space of mRNA resulting from the presence of synonymous codons. In this paper, a novel multi-objective evolutionary optimization-based mRNA design method is proposed. We first formulate the mRNA design problem as a multi-objective optimization problem and then develop an Elite Archive-Assisted Multi-Objective Evolutionary algorithm for mRNA Design, namely EAA-MOED, by incorporating a novel elite archive-assisted method into a weighted optimization framework to improve search efficiency. Experimental studies, involving two state-of-the-art mRNA design methods and five well-known MOEAs, show the competitiveness of the proposed EAA-MOED in mRNA design. © 2024 IEEE.

Multi-objective optimization (MOO) has become an influential framework for various machine learning problems, including reinforcement learning and multitask learning. In this paper, we study the black-box multi-objective optimization problem, where we aim to optimize multiple potentially conflicting objectives with function queries only. To address this challenging problem and find a Pareto optimal solution or the Pareto stationary solution, we propose a novel adaptive stochastic gradient algorithm for black-box MOO, called ASMG. Specifically, we use the stochastic gradient approximation method to obtain the gradient for the distribution parameters of the Gaussian smoothed MOO with function queries only. Subsequently, an adaptive weight is employed to aggregate all stochastic gradients to optimize all objective functions effectively. Theoretically, we explicitly provide the connection between the original MOO problem and the corresponding Gaussian smoothed MOO problem and prove the convergence rate for the proposed ASMG algorithm in both convex and non-convex scenarios. Empirically, the proposed ASMG method achieves competitive performance on multiple numerical benchmark problems. Additionally, the state-of-the-art performance on the black-box multi-task learning problem demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed ASMG method. © 2024 12th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2024. Natural disasters (NDs) have always been a major threat to human lives and infrastructure, causing immense damage and loss. In recent years, the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters have highlighted the need for more effective and efficient disaster management strategies. In this context, the use of technology has emerged as a promising solution. In this survey paper, we explore the employment of recent technologies in order to relieve the impacts of various natural disasters. We provide an overview of how different technologies such as Remote Sensing, Radars and Satellite Imaging, internet-of-things (IoT), Smartphones, and Social Media can be utilized in the management of NDs. By utilizing these technologies, we can predict, respond, and recover from NDs more effectively, potentially saving human lives and minimizing infrastructure damage. The paper also highlights the potential benefits, limitations, and challenges associated with the implementation of these technologies for natural disaster management purposes. While the use of technology can significantly improve NDM, there are also various challenges that need to be addressed, such as the cost of implementation and the need for specialized knowledge and skills. Overall, this survey paper provides a comprehensive overview of the use of technology in managing NDs and sheds light on the important role such technologies can play in NDM. By exploring the potential applications of different technologies, this paper aims to contribute to the development of more effective and sustainable disaster management strategies. © 2023 The Authors

The rising demand for reliable, high-bandwidth satellite communications in far-reach areas drives the integration of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites into future 6G networks. In this paper, we investigate the deployment of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology and rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) within LEO satellite systems to improve communication quality and system capacity. We derive closed-form expressions for outage probability (OP) and reliable throughput that validate the theoretical advantages of these technologies under various signal-to-noise ratio conditions. Numerical results demonstrate that, compared with traditional space division multiple access (SDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) approaches, our RSMA and RIS-integrated framework significantly can reduce OP and enhance reliable throughput with an appropriate power-splitting factor, showcasing its superiority in RIS-enabled satellite communication scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Artificial intelligence(AI) systems surpass certain human intelligence abilities in a statistical sense as a whole, but are not yet the true realization of these human intelligence abilities and behaviors. There are differences, and even contradictions, between the cognition and behavior of AI systems and humans. With the goal of achieving general AI, this study contains a review of the role of cognitive science in inspiring the development of the three mainstream academic branches of AI based on the three-layer framework proposed by David Marr, and the limitations of the current development of AI are explored and analyzed. The differences and inconsistencies between the cognition mechanisms of the human brain and the computation mechanisms of AI systems are analyzed. They are found to be the cause of the differences and contradictions between the cognition and behavior of AI systems and humans. Additionally, eight important research directions and their scientific issues that need to focus on braininspired AI research are proposed: highly imitated bionic information processing, a large-scale deep learning model that balances structure and function, multi-granularity joint problem solving bidirectionally driven by data and knowledge, AI models that simulate specific brain structures, a collaborative processing mechanism with the physical separation of perceptual processing and interpretive analysis, embodied intelligence that integrates the brain cognitive mechanism and AI computation mechanisms,intelligence simulation from individual intelligence to group intelligence(social intelligence), and AI-assisted brain cognitive intelligence.

Channel pruning has been long studied to compress convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which significantly reduces the overall computation. Prior works implement channel pruning in an unexplainable manner, which tends to reduce the final classification errors while failing to consider the internal influence of each channel. In this article, we conduct channel pruning in a white box. Through deep visualization of feature maps activated by different channels, we observe that different channels have a varying contribution to different categories in image classification. Inspired by this, we choose to preserve channels contributing to most categories. Specifically, to model the contribution of each channel to differentiating categories, we develop a class-wise mask for each channel, implemented in a dynamic training manner with respect to the input image's category. On the basis of the learned class-wise mask, we perform a global voting mechanism to remove channels with less category discrimination. Lastly, a fine-tuning process is conducted to recover the performance of the pruned model. To our best knowledge, it is the first time that CNN interpretability theory is considered to guide channel pruning. Extensive experiments on representative image classification tasks demonstrate the superiority of our White-Box over many state-of-the-arts (SOTAs). For instance, on CIFAR-10, it reduces 65.23% floating point operations per seconds (FLOPs) with even 0.62% accuracy improvement for ResNet-110. On ILSVRC-2012, White-Box achieves a 45.6% FLOP reduction with only a small loss of 0.83% in the top-1 accuracy for ResNet-50. Code is available at https://***/zyxxμWhite-Box. © 2012 IEEE.

Boasting superior flexibility in beam manipulation and a simpler framework than traditional phased arrays,terahertz metasurface-based phased arrays show great promise for 5G-A/6G communication *** with the reflective reconfigurable intelligent surface(reflective RIS),the transmissive RIS(TRIS)offers more feasibility for transceiver multiplexing systems to meet the growing demand for high-performance beam tracking in terahertz communication and radar ***,the terahertz TRIS encounters greater challenges in phase shift,beam efficiency,and complex ***,we propose a sub-terahertz TRIS based on the phase shift via Pancharatnam-Berry(PB)metasurface and self-on-off keying(OOK)modulation via Schottky *** electrically reconfigurable unit cell consists of a column-wise phase resonator and a rectangular *** experimental retrieved equivalent lumped-element circuit model is implemented in joint field-circuit simulations and is validated by experiments.A fabricated prototype demonstrates excellent performance of TRIS with the minimum insertion loss of 2.8 dB for operational states,large bandwidth nearly covering the entire W-band for 1-bit phase shift,deep OOK amplitude modulation of 12 dB,and wide scanning range of±60°with low specular *** further implement an integrated platform combining high-speed beam steering and spatial-light modulation,verifying the point-to-point signal transmissions in different directions using the TRIS *** proposed TRIS with high-performance and cost-effective fabrication makes it a promising solution to terahertz minimalist communication systems,radar,and satellite communication systems.
