Human activity recognition (HAR) as an emerging technology can have undeniable impacts on several applications such as health monitoring, context-aware systems, transportation, robotics, and smart cities. Among the main research methods in HAR (sensor, image, and WiFi-based), the WiFi-based method has attracted considerable attention due to the ubiquity of WiFi devices. WiFi devices can be utilized to distinguish daily activities such as "walk", "run", and "sleep". These activities affect WiFi signal propagation and can be further used to recognize activities. This paper proposes a Deep Learning method for HAR tasks using channel state information (CSI). A new model is developed in which CSI data are converted to grayscale images. These images are then fed into a 2D-Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for activity classification. We take advantage of CNN's high accuracy on image classification along with WiFi-based ubiquity. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach achieves acceptable performance in HAR tasks. © 2021 IEEE.

As an affordable and convenient eye scan, fundus photography holds the potential for preventing vision impairment, especially in resource-limited regions. However, fundus image degradation is common under intricate imaging environments, impacting following diagnosis and treatment. Consequently, image quality assessment (IQA) and enhancement (IQE) are essential for ensuring the clinical value and reliability of fundus images. While existing reviews offer some overview of this field, a comprehensive analysis of the interplay between IQA and IQE, along with their clinical deployment challenges, is lacking. This paper addresses this gap by providing a thorough review of fundus IQA and IQE algorithms, research advancements, and practical applications. We outline the fundamentals of the fundus photography imaging system and the associated interferences, and then systematically summarize the paradigms in fundus IQA and IQE. Furthermore, we discuss the practical challenges and solutions in deploying IQA and IQE, as well as offer insights into potential future research directions. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. This work investigates the problem of undersampled face recognition (i.e., insufficient training data) encountered in practical Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Insufficient and uncertain samples captured by IoT devices may include background and facial disguise that makes face recognition more challenging than that with sufficient and reliable images. Many models work well in face recognition on a big data set, but when training data are insufficient, they achieve unsatisfactory performance. This work proposes a novel method named sparse common feature-based representation (SCFR) that provides a unique and stable result and completely avoids very time-consuming training required by a deep learning model. Specially, it constructs a common feature dictionary using both training and test images. Thereinto, a common feature is based on a discriminative common vector and learned by a Gaussian mixture model for both training and test images in a semisupervised learninig manner, which would reduce the difference among samples in each class. In the optimization, the latent indicator of test data is initialized by the estimated label. This can avoid learning invalid information and lead to good prototype images. A new variation dictionary characterizes variables that can be shared by different classes. Finally, this work adopts minimum reconstruction residuals to recognize test images, thus bringing about a substantial improvement in SCFR's performance. Extensive results on benchmark face databases demonstrate that the proposed method is better than the state-of-the-art methods handling undersampled face recognition. © 2014 IEEE.

Autonomous systems use independent decisionmaking with only limited human intervention to accomplish goals in complex and unpredictable environments. As the autonomy technologies that underpin them continue to advance, these systems will find their way into an increasing number of applications in an ever wider range of settings. If we are to deploy them to perform safety-critical or mission-critical roles, it is imperative that we have justified confidence in their safe and correct operation. Verification is the process by which such confidence is established. However, autonomous systems pose challenges to existing verification practices. This paper highlights viewpoints of the Roadmap Working Group of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Technical Committee for Verification of Autonomous Systems, identifying these grand challenges, and providing a vision for future research efforts that will be needed to address them. © 2024, CC BY.

Unsupervised feature selection (UFS) has recently gained attention for its effectiveness in processing unlabeled high-dimensional data. However, existing methods overlook the intrinsic causal mechanisms within the data, resulting in the selection of irrelevant features and poor interpretability. Additionally, previous graph-based methods fail to account for the differing impacts of non-causal and causal features in constructing the similarity graph, which leads to false links in the generated graph. To address these issues, a novel UFS method, called Causally-Aware UnSupErvised Feature Selection learning (CAUSE-FS), is proposed. CAUSE-FS introduces a novel causal regularizer that reweights samples to balance the confounding distribution of each treatment feature. This regularizer is subsequently integrated into a generalized unsupervised spectral regression model to mitigate spurious associations between features and clustering labels, thus achieving causal feature selection. Furthermore, CAUSE-FS employs causality-guided hierarchical clustering to partition features with varying causal contributions into multiple granularities. By integrating similarity graphs learned adaptively at different granularities, CAUSE-FS increases the importance of causal features when constructing the fused similarity graph to capture the reliable local structure of data. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of CAUSE-FS over state-of-the-art methods, with its interpretability further validated through feature visualization. A variable speed drive (VSD) based induction motor power emulator is presented in this paper, which is intended to be used in a real-time multi-converter-based hardware testbed (HTB) system. The presented HTB load emulator can accurately reflect the dynamic performance of a VSD-based load with multiple control algorithms without requiring significant computational resources and simulation time. Therefore, the developed VSD load emulator can not only mimic VSD-driven motor load performance, but also can be flexibly integrated into electric power grid emulators or simulators, which enable more detailed power grid analyses by providing a more accurate model for this particular type of load. This paper discusses the specification of the developed VSD-based load emulator, including multiple control schemes, and the physical realization in a power grid emulator. Finally, the accuracy of the VSD load emulator is demonstrated with experimental results. © 2020 IEEE.

Background: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) have a higher risk of cognitive impairment (CI). However, complexity of CI diagnosis and lack of simple screening approaches limited early screening and intervention of CI in AF patients. Objective: Our study aimed to develop deep learning models based on fundus photographs for easy screening of CI in AF patients. Methods: From May 2021 to April 2023, patients who completed fundus examination and cognitive function evaluation in the Chinese Atrial Fibrillation Registry Study were included. The training and validation sets were randomly split at an 8:2 ratio. Participants from the Beijing Eye Study served as the external validation set. Different deep learning models were trained, and their CI detection ability was validated. Results: A total of 899 patients in the Chinese Atrial Fibrillation Registry Study were included. In the validation set, the vision-ensemble model based on fundus images alone had an area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.855 (95% confidence interval 0.816–0.894) for CI screening. The multimodal model (AUROC 0.861, 95% confidence interval 0.823–0.898), based on fundus photographs and 4 clinical variables, performed comparably to the vision-ensemble model. The AUROC of the vision-ensemble model for CI screening achieved 0.773 (95% confidence interval 0.709–0.837) in the external test set. In the saliency map, the vision-ensemble model focused on areas around retinal vessels and the optic disc. Conclusion: A vision-ensemble model based on fundus images might be practical for preliminary screening of CI in AF patients. © 2025 Heart Rhythm Society

In this paper, the problem of using one active unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and four passive UAVs to localize a 3D target UAV in real time is investigated. In the considered model, each passive UAV receives reflection signals from the target UAV, which are initially transmitted by the active UAV. The received reflection signals allow each passive UAV to estimate the signal transmission distance which will be transmitted to a base station (BS) for the estimation of the position of the target UAV. Due to the movement of the target UAV, each active/passive UAV must optimize its trajectory to continuously localize the target UAV. Meanwhile, since the accuracy of the distance estimation depends on the signal-to-noise ratio of the transmission signals, the active UAV must optimize its transmit power. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to jointly optimize the transmit power of the active UAV and trajectories of both active and passive UAVs so as to maximize the target UAV positioning accuracy. To solve this problem, a Z function decomposition based reinforcement learning (ZD-RL) method is proposed. Compared to value function decomposition based RL (VD-RL), the proposed method can find the probability distribution of the sum of future rewards to accurately estimate the expected value of the sum of future rewards thus finding better transmit power of the active UAV and trajectories for both active and passive UAVs and improving target UAV positioning accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed ZD-RL method can reduce the positioning errors by up to 39.4% and 64.6%, compared to VD-RL and independent deep RL methods, respectively. Human bones have formed the preferred configuration for high-strength and lightweight after long-time evolution. Taking human’s longest and strongest bone - the femur - as an example, it is consist of two characteristic layers, i.e. the substantia compacta and the substantia spongiosd. This article innovatively imitates the structural characteristics of human femur, the thigh of humanoid robot is designed in form of "variable thickness shell + variable density lattice". The thickness of shell and the density of lattice are adjusted by the initial stress distribution individually. Results show that the weight of shell and lattice of the thigh structure can be reduced by 20% under reasonable mapping relationship of "stress - shell thickness" and "stress - lattice rod diameter", while the structural stiffness meets the application requirements. Finally, the limiting factors of the "variable thickness shell + variable density lattice" structure designing approach are analyzed, and potential measures for optimizing the design method of the humanoid robot thigh in the future are described.
