Motivated by concerns about making online decisions that incur undue amount of risk at each time step, in this paper, we formulate the probably anytime-safe stochastic combinatorial semi-bandits problem. In this problem, the agent is given the option to select a subset of size at most K from a set of L ground items. Each item is associated to a certain mean reward as well as a variance that represents its risk. To mitigate the risk that the agent incurs, we require that with probability at least 1 − δ, over the entire horizon of time T, each of the choices that the agent makes should contain items whose sum of variances does not exceed a certain variance budget. We call this probably anytime-safe constraint. Under this constraint, we design and analyze an algorithm PASCOMBUCB that minimizes the regret over the horizon of time T. By developing accompanying information-theoretic lower bounds, we show that under both the problem-dependent and problem-independent paradigms, PASCOMBUCB is almost asymptotically optimal. Experiments are conducted to corroborate our theoretical findings. Our problem setup, the proposed PASCOMBUCB algorithm, and novel analyses are applicable to domains such as recommendation systems and transportation in which an agent is allowed to choose multiple items at a single time step and wishes to control the risk over the whole time horizon. © 2023, CC BY.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is expected to be a promising technology in the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks for its ability to alleviate resources shortage and excessive hardware expenses. One typical representative for ISAC waveforms is the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform, which divides the time-frequency resources into orthogonal resource elements (REs). In order to satisfy their diverse design requirements and mitigate mutual interference, the communication and sensing subsystems can be assigned with different REs, which necessitates effective allocation strategies of different resources across time and frequency domains. In this article, a cross-domain multicarrier waveform design method-ology is proposed, which optimizes the RE assignment and power allocation strategies for the OFDM-based ISAC system. Specifically, for sensing performance enhancement, the unit cells of the ambiguity function (AF) of the sensing components are spe-cially shaped to achieve a “locally” perfect auto-correlation (AC) property within a predefined region of interest (RoI) in the Delay-Doppler domain. Afterwards, the irrelevant cells outside the RoI, which can determine the sensing power allocation strategy, are optimized alternatively with the communication power allocation strategy to maximize the throughput for the communication purpose. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the cross-domain multicarrier waveform design, which also provides useful guidelines for parameter settings of the proposed OFDM-based ISAC system.

Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric materials hold great promise for ultrahigh-density data storage and ultrafast memory applications in flexible or wearable electronic devices. Because of depolarizing field effects and high-energy barriers for switching, only a handful of 2D ferroelectrics have been reported experimentally, such as In2Se3 and CuInP2S6. Through high-throughput calculations we identified a catalog of 25 synthesizable sliding ferroelectrics with large out-of-plane polarization and low sliding energy barriers. The high-throughput process started with 6351 monolayer materials in 2dmatpedia, narrowed down to 79 monolayer semiconductors with honeycomb structures, leading to the construction of 474 homobilayers sliding ferroelectrics, and ultimately identifying 25 high-performance 2D sliding ferroelectrics. Using big-data analysis and machine learning, we also revealed strong correlations between polarization and key physical properties, especially a hidden factor of effective van der Waals radius, which has been overlooked in previous fewer-sample studies. Based on these mechanistic insights, we proposed machine learning descriptors for predicting sliding ferroelectric properties.

Over the past decade, the dominance of deep learning has prevailed across various domains of artificial intelligence, including natural language processing, computer vision, and biomedical signal processing. While there have been remarkable improvements in model accuracy, deploying these models on lightweight devices, such as mobile phones and microcontrollers, is constrained by limited resources. In this survey, we provide comprehensive design guidance tailored for these devices, detailing the meticulous design of lightweight models, compression methods, and hardware acceleration strategies. The principal goal of this work is to explore methods and concepts for getting around hardware constraints without compromising the model's accuracy. Additionally, we explore two notable paths for lightweight deep learning in the future: deployment techniques for TinyML and Large Language Models. Passive metal reflectors for communication enhancement have appealing advantages such as ultra low cost, zero energy expenditure, maintenance-free operation, long life span, and full compatibility with legacy wireless systems. To unleash the full potential of passive reflectors for wireless communications, this paper proposes a new passive reflector architecture, termed flexible reflector (FR), for enabling the flexible adjustment of beamforming direction via the FR placement and rotation optimization. We consider the multi-FR aided area coverage enhancement and aim to maximize the minimum expected receive power over all locations within the target coverage area, by jointly optimizing the placement positions and rotation angles of multiple FRs. To gain useful insights, the special case of movable reflector (MR) with fixed rotation is first studied to maximize the expected receive power at a target location, where the optimal single-MR placement positions for electrically large and small reflectors are derived in closed-form, respectively. It is shown that the reflector should be placed at the specular reflection point for electrically large reflector. While for area coverage enhancement, the optimal placement is obtained for the single-MR case and a sequential placement algorithm is proposed for the multi-MR case. Moreover, for the general case of FR, joint placement and rotation design is considered for the single-/multiFR aided coverage enhancement, respectively. Numerical results are presented which demonstrate significant performance gains of FRs over various benchmark schemes under different practical setups in terms of receive power enhancement. This paper investigates the security-constrained bidding strategy of the emerging shared transportation hubs for renewable fuels and refined oil (STH-RRs) participating within energy, regulation and pipeline logistics markets. Firstly, to excavate more flexible capability for the power system as well as to increase the revenue of the STH-RR operation company, the model for STH-RR participating in regulation market is established. Secondly, the security-constrained two-stage bidding model is first proposed for STH-RRs to balance the revenue across energy, regulation and pipeline logistics markets. Particularly, to guarantee secure operation of STH-RRs and meet the delivery demand, the rigorous multi-product transportation constraints are considered in both stages. Case studies based on the modified real-world multi-product pipelines in South China validate the proposed method, with the revenue and turnover increase of 14% and 4.7%, respectively, compared with conventional methods.

Digital Twin-Assisted Adaptive Preloading for Short Video Streaming

We propose a digital twin-assisted adaptive preloading scheme to enhance bandwidth efficiency and user quality of experience (QoE) in short video streaming. We first analyze the relationship between the achievable throughput and video bitrate and critical factors that affect the preloading decision, including the buffer size and bitrate selection. We then construct a digital twin-assisted adaptive preloading framework for short video streaming. By collecting and analyzing user’s historical throughput and tracking behavior information, a throughput prediction model and a probabilistic model can be constructed to accurately predict future throughput and user behavior, respectively. Using the predicted information and real-time running status data from a short video application, we design a preloading strategy to enhance bandwidth efficiency while guaranteeing user QoE. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme comparing with the state-of-the-art preloading schemes. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Computational science has made rapid progress in recent years, leading to ever increasing demand for supercomputing resources. For scientific applications that leverage such resources, Message Passing Interface (MPI) plays a crucial role in enabling distributed memory parallelization across multiple nodes. However, parallelizing MPI code manually, and specifically, performing domain decomposition, is a challenging and error-prone task. In this paper, we address this problem by developing MPI-RICAL, a novel data-driven, programming-assistance tool that assists programmers in writing domain decomposition based distributed memory parallelization code using MPI. Specifically, we leverage Transformer architecture - the invention that led to advancements in the field of natural language processing (NLP) - with a supervised language model to suggest MPI functions and their proper locations in the code on the fly. In addition to the novel model for MPI-based parallel programming, in this paper, we also introduce MPICodeCorpus, the first publicly-available corpus of MPI-based parallel programs that is created by mining more than 15,000 open-source repositories on GitHub. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of MPI-RICAL on both dataset from MPICodeCorpus and more importantly, on a compiled benchmark of MPI-based parallel programs for numerical computations that represent real-world scientific applications. Specifically, MPI-RICAL achieves F1 scores between 0.87-0.91 on these programs, demonstrating its accuracy in suggesting correct MPI functions at appropriate code locations.
