The recently proposed concept of Age of Information (AoI) measures the freshness of the sensor data sampled by remote Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which is an important indicator for the smart city. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) communication can significantly reduce the sensor data’s AoI due to its high maneuverability. However, the UAV’s high energy consumption remains a challenging issue. In this paper, we propose a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) assisted UAV data collection framework to minimize UAV energy consumption. By adjusting the phase of the RIS, the UAV can collect more sensor data simultaneously. A RIS phase alignment method is introduced to reduce the complexity of RIS phase solving. The IoT devices are clustered to discretize UAV trajectory. The optimal clustering scheme to maximize the AoI suppression efficiency is found by adjusting the RIS phase alignment points continuously. Therefore, the AoI requirement can be achieved with a shorter UAV flight distance. Finally, the UAV trajectory is solved by the Deep Q network (DQN) algorithm to guarantee the long-term AoI requirement. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Three-dimensional magnetic recording (3DMR) is a highly promising approach to achieving ultra-large data storage capacity in hard disk drives. One of the greatest challenges for 3DMR lies in performing sequential and correct writing of bits into the multi-layer recording medium. In this work, we have proposed a hierarchical recording architecture based on layered heat-assisted writing with a multi-head array. The feasibility of the architecture is validated in a dual-layer 3DMR system with FePt-based thin films via micromagnetic simulation. Our results reveal the magnetization reversal mechanism of the grains, ultimately attaining appreciable switching probability and medium signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each layer. In particular, an optimal head-to-head distance is identified as the one that maximizes the medium SNR. Optimizing the system’s noise resistance will improve the overall SNR and allow for a smaller optimal head-to-head distance, which can pave the way for scaling 3DMR to more recording layers. High-Fidelity, Frequency-Flexible Two-Qubit Fluxonium Gates with a Transmon Coupler

We propose and demonstrate an architecture for fluxonium-fluxonium two-qubit gates mediated by transmon couplers (FTF, for fluxonium-transmon-fluxonium). Relative to architectures that exclusively rely on a direct coupling between fluxonium qubits, FTF enables stronger couplings for gates using noncomputational states while simultaneously suppressing the static controlled-phase entangling rate (ZZ) down to kilohertz levels, all without requiring strict parameter matching. Here, we implement FTF with a flux-tunable transmon coupler and demonstrate a microwave-activated controlled-Z (CZ) gate whose operation frequency can be tuned over a 2-GHz range, adding frequency allocation freedom for FTFs in larger systems. Across this range, state-of-the-art CZ gate fidelities are observed over many bias points and reproduced across the two devices characterized in this work. After optimizing both the operation frequency and the gate duration, we achieve peak CZ fidelities in the 99.85%–99.9% range. Finally, we implement model-free reinforcement learning of the pulse parameters to boost the mean gate fidelity up to 99.922%±0.009%, averaged over roughly an hour between scheduled training runs. Beyond the microwave-activated CZ gate we present here, FTF can be applied to a variety of other fluxonium gate schemes to improve gate fidelities and passively reduce unwanted ZZ interactions.

Dynamic Online Modulation Recognition using Incremental Learning

Modulation recognition is a fundamental task in communication systems as the accurate identification of modulation schemes is essential for reliable signal processing, interference mitigation for coexistent communication technologies, and network optimization. Incorporating deep learning (DL) models into modulation recognition has demonstrated promising results in various scenarios. However, conventional DL models often fall short in online dynamic contexts, particularly in class incremental scenarios where new modulation schemes are encountered during online deployment. Retraining these models on all previously seen modulation schemes is not only time-consuming but may also not be feasible due to storage limitations. On the other hand, training solely on new modulation schemes often results in catastrophic forgetting of previously learned classes. This issue renders DL-based modulation recognition models inapplicable in real-world scenarios because the dynamic nature of communication systems necessitate the effective adaptability to new modulation schemes. This paper addresses this challenge by evaluating the performance of multiple Incremental Learning (IL) algorithms in dynamic modulation recognition scenarios, comparing them against conventional DL-based modulation recognition. Our results demonstrate that modulation recognition frameworks based on IL effectively prevent catastrophic forgetting, enabling models to perform robustly in dynamic scenarios. © 2023, CC BY.

This work addresses the problem of recursive state estimation for networked control systems with unknown nonlinearities and binary-encoding mechanisms (BEMs). To enhance transmission reliability and reduce network resource consumption, BEMs are used to convert measurement signals into binary bit strings (BBSs) of limited length, which are then transmitted to the estimator through noisy communication channels. During transmission, random bit errors may occur in the BBSs due to channel noise. For the considered nonlinear networked control systems affected by random bit errors, a neural-network (NN)-based recursive estimation strategy is proposed, where an NN with a time-varying tuning scalar is employed to approximate the unknown nonlinearity of the networked control systems. By using the proposed strategy, the upper bounds of the estimation error of the system state and the trace of the estimation error of the NN weight (NNW) are first derived. These bounds are then minimized by recursively designing both the estimator gain matrix and the tuning scalar of the NNW. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed estimation strategy is demonstrated through a numerical example.

Addressing the statistical challenge of computing the multivariate normal (MVN) probability in high dimensions holds significant potential for enhancing various applications. For example, the critical task of detecting confidence regions where a process probability surpasses a specific threshold is essential in diverse applications, such as pinpointing tumor locations in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan images, determining hydraulic parameters in groundwater flow issues, and forecasting regional wind power to optimize wind turbine placement, among numerous others. One common way to compute high-dimensional MVN probabilities is the Separation-of-Variables (SOV) algorithm. This algorithm is known for its high computational complexity of O(n 3 ) and space complexity of O(n 2 ), mainly due to a Cholesky factorization operation for an n×n covariance matrix, where n represents the dimensionality of the MVN problem. This work proposes a high-performance computing framework that allows scaling the SOV algorithm and, subsequently, the confidence region detection algorithm. The framework leverages parallel linear algebra algorithms with a task-based programming model to achieve performance scalability in computing process probabilities, especially on large-scale systems. In addition, we enhance our implementation by incorporating Tile Low-Rank (TLR) approximation techniques to reduce algorithmic complexity without compromising the necessary accuracy. To evaluate the performance and accuracy of our framework, we conduct assessments using simulated data and a wind speed dataset. Our proposed implementation effectively handles high-dimensional multivariate normal (MVN) probability computations on shared and distributed-memory systems using finite precision arithmetics and TLR approximation computation. Performance results show a significant speedup of up to 20X in solving the MVN problem using TLR approximation compared to the reference dense solution without sacrificin

The specific objective of developing neural interfaces is to analyze the electrophysiological signals associated with neural activities within the body, with the aim of providing early diagnosis for diseases related to the neural system. One example is the electrocardiogram (ECG) that assesses the functionality of the heart, identifying arrhythmias and potentially pinpointing the location of any malfunction. Conventional clinical protocols require cardiac electrical signal measurements to be conducted during a stationary phase, with an emphasis on minimizing noise interference as much as possible. While this holds true in clinical scenarios, such motion artifacts can be valuable sources of information for motion tracking. In this study, we present a methodology where we demonstrate the simultaneous monitoring and computation of both heart rate and motion using a wireless ECG sensing system with a three-electrode configuration.

In this paper, the optimization of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) localization under jamming attacks is studied. In the considered network, a base station (BS) collaborates with an active UAV to localize a target UAV. During this positioning process, a jamming UAV transmits discontinuous signals to passive UAVs to interfere the distance information measurement. To localize the target UAV under jamming attacks, the BS jointly use two localization methods: 1) generative adversarial network (GAN)-based positioning method and 2) time difference of arrival (TDOA)-based positioning method. Since GAN-based positioning method cannot defense in a strong jamming signal while TDOA-based positioning method may consume more energy and sacrifice localization accuracy, the BS must select an appropriate positioning method (GAN-based or TDOA-based methods) and four distance measurement information of passive UAVs to estimate the position of the target UAV. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the positioning error between the estimated and the ground truth positions of the target UAV while considering jamming attacks and the trajectory of passive UAVs. To solve this problem, we propose a mixture Gaussian distribution model-based collaborative reinforcement learning (RL) method which enables the active UAV to determine its transmit power and trajectory, and enables the BS to select the most appropriate subsets of distance measurement information and the optimal positioning method according to the movement of passive UAVs and the unknown jamming attack pattern of the jamming UAV. Simulation results show the proposed method can reduce the positioning error of the target UAV by up to 36.5% compared to the method that does not consider the GAN-based positioning method.
