In recent years, the Named Data Networking (NDN) paradigm has emerged as a promising candidate for future Internet architecture. Underpinned by the notion of a data-centric forwarding philosophy, NDN is purported to offer seamless network communication for mobile users. However, while it provides inherent support for consumer mobility, viable solutions for producer mobility remain insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to highlight the mobility issues in NDN, particularly concerning high latency, Interest packet loss, and Interest retransmission, with a focus on producer mobility. In this paper, we critically review previous works based on proactive and reactive approaches. Furthermore, we propose a mobility management model that adopts a proactive approach, estimating the producer's handoff time from the connected access point. The proposed model leverages this information to notify consumers about the moving producer, aiming to prevent consumers from sending Interest to the mobile producer during handoff and thereby overcome the associated challenges.

In this paper, the problem of maximizing the sum rate of mobile users in a multi-base station (BS) cooperative millimeter-wave (mmWave) multicast communication system is studied. In the considered model, due to the real-time mobility of users, the users being served by a given BS and beamforming of BSs and users are dynamic. Multiple BSs must cooperate to serve dynamic requests of multiple mobile users. This problem is posed as an optimization framework whose goal is to maximize the sum rate of all mobile users by jointly optimizing the number of users served by all BSs and beamforming matrices of both BSs and users. To solve this non-convex optimization problem, we first introduce a value decomposition based reinforcement learning (VD- RL) algorithm to determine the users to be served by each BS. Then, we use the block diagonalization method to obtain the fully digital transmit beamforming matrices of all BSs as well as the receive beamforming matrices of the users. Finally, a fast optimization algorithm is used to optimize the hybrid beamforming matrices of both BSs and users. Simulation results show that, the proposed algorithm can achieve up to 51 % gain in terms of the sum rate of all mobile users compared to baseline multi-agent algorithms.

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is a field that has grown enormously in importance in recent times, with the spread of the personal computer. However, HCI devices have had little evolution since their first designs. Prolonged use of the mouse can cause injury or permanent damage to the hands and wrists. So, this paper proposes an alternative to the conventional mouse that does not require the use of hands and works only with a webcam. A program has been developed that performs all the functions of the mouse based on the image of the user's face captured by the camera. The cursor moves to the position of the screen where the user is looking at in real time, while the rest of the functionalities such as clicks and scrolling are controlled with facial commands, such as winking or tilting the head. To implement these functions, several tools based on artificial intelligence have been used, such as a facial landmark detector, a gaze vector estimator, and a fully connected multilayer neural network.

In several Machine Learning (ML) clustering and dimensionality reduction approaches, such as nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF), RESCAL, and K-Means clustering, users must select a hyper-parameter $k$ to define the number of clusters or components that yield an ideal separation of samples or clean clusters. This selection, while difficult, is crucial to avoid overfitting or underfitting the data. Several ML applications use scoring methods (e.g., Silhouette and Davies Boulding scores) to evaluate the cluster pattern stability for a specific $k$ . The score is calculated for different trials over a range of $k$ , and the ideal $k$ is heuristically selected as the value before the model starts overfitting, indicated by a drop or increase in the score resembling an elbow curve plot. While the grid-search method can be used to accurately find a good $k$ value, visiting a range of $k$ can become time-consuming and computationally resource-intensive. In this paper, we introduce the Binary Bleed method based on binary search, which significantly reduces the $k$ search space for these grid-search ML algorithms by truncating the target $k$ values from the search space using a heuristic with thresholding over the scores. Binary Bleed is designed to work with single-node serial, single-node multi-processing, and distributed computing resources. In our experiments, we demonstrate the reduced search space gain over a naive sequential search of the ideal $k$ and the accuracy of the Binary Bleed in identifying the correct $k$ for NMFk, K-Means pyDNMFk, and pyDRESCALk with Silhouette and Davies Boulding scores. We make our implementation of Binary Bleed for the NMF algorithm available on GitHub.

In this paper, the problem of joint transmission and computation resource allocation for probabilistic semantic communication (PSC) network with rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) is investigated. In the considered model, the base station (BS) needs to transmit a large amount of data, which is represented by substantial knowledge graphs, to multiple users. Due to limited communication resource, the BS needs to utilize semantic communication techniques to compress the large-sized data. In this paper, the semantic communication is enabled by shared probability graphs between the BS and users. The process of semantic compression requires computation power at the BS, which has an impact on limited power budget. Therefore, it is necessary to balance the power between transmission and computation. Based on the probability graph, the semantic rate related to semantic compression ratio is first theoretically formulated. Then, the problem is formulated as an optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the sum semantic rate of all users under total power, semantic compression ratio, and rate allocation constraints. To tackle this problem, an iterative algorithm is accordingly proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Flexible intelligent metasurfaces (FIMs) show great potential for improving the wireless network capacity in an energy-efficient manner. An FIM is a soft array consisting of several low-cost radiating elements. Each element can independently emit electromagnetic signals, while flexibly adjusting its position even perpendicularly to the overall surface to ‘morph’ its 3D shape. More explicitly, compared to a conventional rigid antenna array, an FIM is capable of finding an optimal 3D surface shape that provides improved signal quality. In this paper, we study point-to-point multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications between a pair of FIMs. In order to characterize the capacity limits of FIM-aided MIMO transmissions over frequency-flat fading channels, we formulate a transmit optimization problem for maximizing the MIMO channel capacity by jointly optimizing the 3D surface shapes of the transmitting and receiving FIMs as well as the MIMO transmit covariance matrix, subject to the total transmit power constraint and to the maximum perpendicular morphing range of the FIM. To solve this problem, we develop an efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm. The BCD algorithm iteratively updates the 3D surface shapes of the FIMs and the transmit covariance matrix, while keeping the other fixed, to find a locally optimal solution. Numerical results verify that FIMs can achieve higher MIMO capacity than that of the conventional rigid arrays. In particular, the MIMO channel capacity can be doubled by the proposed BCD algorithm under some setups. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The majority of sources of coherent optical radiation rely on laser oscillators driven by population inversion. Despite their technological importance in communications, medicine, industry, and other fields, it remains a challenge to access the spectral range of 0.1–10 THz (the “terahertz gap”), a frequency band for applications ranging from spectroscopy to security and high-speed wireless communications. Here, we propose a way to produce coherent radiation spanning the THz gap by efficient second-harmonic generation in low-loss dielectric structures, starting from technologically mature electronic oscillators in the approximately 100 GHz range. To achieve this goal, we introduce hybrid THz-band dielectric cavity designs that combine (1) extreme field concentration in high-quality-factor resonators with (2) nonlinear materials enhanced by phonon resonances. We theoretically predict conversion efficiencies of >103%/W and the potential to bridge the THz gap with 1 W of input power. This approach enables efficient, cascaded parametric frequency converters, and light sources extensible into the mid-IR spectrum and beyond.

We for the first time study characteristic fluctuation of gate-all-around silicon nanosheet MOSFETs induced by random dopants fluctuation (RDF), interface trap fluctuation (ITF), and work function fluctuation (WKF), and their combinations. The explored devices affected by the WKF and its combination result in sizeable variability. Because of enigmatical interactions among the aforementioned random factors, overestimated variabilities occur if we only consider one random source each time, compared with the statistical 3D device simulation for full RDF, ITF and WKF at the same time. Notably, 10.78% and 103% overestimations are found for the threshold voltage and off-state current fluctuations. © 2022 IEEE.

Electrophysiological recording is a widely used method to investigate cardiovascular pathology,pharmacology and developmental *** arrays record the electrical potential of cells in a minimally invasive and highthroughput ***,commonly used microelectrode arays primarily employ planar microelectrodes and cannot work in applications that require a recording of the intracellular action potential of a single *** this study,we proposed a novel measuring method that is able to record the intracellular action potential of a single cardiomyocyte by using a nanowell patterned microelectrode array(NWMEA).The NWMEA consists of five nanoscale wells at the center of each circular planar *** pulse electroporation was applied to the NWMEA to penetrate the cardiomyocyte membrane,and the intracellular action potential was continuously *** intracellular potential recording of cardiomyocytes by the NWMEA measured a potential signal with a higher quality(213.76±25.85%),reduced noise root-mean-square(~33%),and higher signal-to-noise ratio(254.36±12.61%)when compared to those of the extracellular *** to previously reported nanopillar microelectrodes,the NWMEA could ensure single cell electroporation and acquire high-quality action potential of cardiomyocytes with reduced fabrication *** NWMEA-based biosensing system is a promising tool to record the intracellular action potential of a single cell to broaden the usage of microelectrode arrays in electrophysiological investigation.

PROPHET: Conflict-Free Sharding Blockchain via Byzantine-Tolerant Deterministic Ordering

Sharding scales throughput by splitting blockchain nodes into parallel groups. However, different shards’ independent and random scheduling for cross-shard transactions results in numerous conflicts and aborts, since cross-shard transactions from different shards may access the same account. A deterministic ordering can eliminate conflicts by determining a global order for transactions before processing, as proved in the database field. Unfortunately, due to the intertwining of the Byzantine environment and information isolation among shards, there is no trusted party able to predetermine such an order for cross-shard transactions. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes PROPHET, a conflict-free sharding blockchain based on Byzantine-tolerant deterministic ordering. It first depends on untrusted self-organizing coalitions of nodes from different shards to pre-execute cross-shard transactions for prerequisite information about ordering. It then determines a trusted global order based on stateless ordering and post-verification for pre-executed results, through shard cooperation. Following the order, the shards thus orderly execute and commit transactions without conflicts. PROPHET orchestrates the pre-execution, ordering, and execution processes in the sharding consensus for minimal overhead. We rigorously prove the determinism and serializability of transactions under the Byzantine and sharded environment. An evaluation of our prototype shows that PROPHET improves the throughput by 3.11× and achieves nearly no aborts on 1 million Ethereum transactions compared with state-of-the-art sharding.
