In this letter, we study the energy efficiency maximization problem for a fluid antenna system (FAS) in near field communications. Specifically, we consider a point-to-point near-field system where the base station (BS) transmitter has multiple fixed-position antennas and the user receives the signals with multiple fluid antennas. Our objective is to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming of the BS and the fluid antenna positions at the user for maximizing the energy efficiency. Our scheme is based on an alternating optimization algorithm that iteratively solves the beamforming and antenna position subproblems. Our simulation results validate the performance improvement of the proposed algorithm and confirm the effectiveness of FAS. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites can be used to assist maritime wireless communications for data transmission across wide-ranging areas. However, extensive coverage of LEO satellites, combined with openness of channels, can cause the communication process to suffer from security risks. This paper presents a low-altitude friendly-jamming LEO satellite-maritime communication system enabled by a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to ensure data security at the physical layer. Since such a system requires trade-off policies that balance the secrecy rate and energy consumption of the UAV to meet evolving scenario demands, we formulate a secure satellite-maritime communication multi-objective optimization problem (SSMCMOP). In order to solve the dynamic and long-term optimization problem, we reformulate it into a Markov decision process. We then propose a transformer-enhanced soft actor critic (TransSAC) algorithm, which is a generative artificial intelligence-enable deep reinforcement learning approach to solve the reformulated problem, so that capturing global dependencies and diversely exploring weights. Simulation results demonstrate that the TransSAC outperforms various baselines, and achieves an optimal secrecy rate while effectively minimizing the energy consumption of the UAV. Sharding scales throughput by splitting blockchain nodes into parallel groups. However, different shards’ independent and random scheduling for cross-shard transactions results in numerous conflicts and aborts, since cross-shard transactions from different shards may access the same account. A deterministic ordering can eliminate conflicts by determining a global order for transactions before processing, as proved in the database field. Unfortunately, due to the intertwining of the Byzantine environment and information isolation among shards, there is no trusted party able to predetermine such an order for cross-shard transactions. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes Prophet, a conflict-free sharding blockchain based on Byzantine-tolerant deterministic ordering. It first depends on untrusted self-organizing coalitions of nodes from different shards to pre-execute cross-shard transactions for prerequisite information about ordering. It then determines a trusted global order based on stateless ordering and post-verification for pre-executed results, through shard cooperation. Following the order, the shards thus orderly execute and commit transactions without conflicts. Prophet orchestrates the pre-execution, ordering, and execution processes in the sharding consensus for minimal overhead. We rigorously prove the determinism and serializability of transactions under the Byzantine and sharded environment. An evaluation of our prototype shows that Prophet improves the throughput by 3.11× and achieves nearly no aborts on 1 million Ethereum transactions compared with state-of-the-art sharding.

The underwater Internet of Things (UIoT) is crucial in developing marine resources. However, due to the low data rate of underwater channels, it is difficult to have a central server to process data from numerous devices as using terrestrial communications. Therefore, decentralized federated learning (DFL) with communication-efficient modifications is a promising alternative to empower UIoT with artificial intelligence and collaborative training. However, existing DFL strategies rely on a carefully designed small aggregation weight when aggregating parameters from neighbor nodes to mitigate the compression error, resulting in a slow convergence rate. In addition, the effect of data compression under time-varying topologies is not considered in current DFL algorithms. In response to these problems, this work studies a DFL framework with underwater acoustic channel and time-varying topology. Firstly, considering the low data rate and dynamics of the acoustic channel, we propose a practical scheme for adaptive compression and device connectivity. Moreover, we combine data compression and the error-compensation technique with time-varying topology and propose a DFL algorithm with aggregation weights decaying over time to achieve fast convergence under non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data. We derive a convergence bound for the proposed algorithm with respect to compression and time-varying topology and demonstrate that it achieves the same asymptotic convergence rate as centralized FL with perfect communication. Simulation results show that, compared with DFL algorithms without decaying aggregation weights and centralized FL schemes, the proposed algorithm exhibits higher accuracy and faster convergence rate in underwater environments. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

This paper investigates the spectral efficiency (SE) performance of the uplink rate splitting multiple access (RSMA)-enabled massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) system operating Rician fading channels. To reduce energy consumption, we employ a mixed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) scheme. Specifically, considering imperfect channel state information (CSI), we deduce expressions for the uplink SE of the user through maximum ratio combining (MRC) detection. Our analysis focuses on the scenario where the Rician factor approaches infinity, offering deeper insights. The numerical findings support the validity of the theoretical analysis and highlight the impact of key factors, including the transmit power, the number of antennas, and the Rician factor, on the performance of the RSMA-enabled mMIMO system.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the criticality of timely intervention in a situation exacerbated by a shortage in medical staff and equipment. Pain-level screening is the initial step toward identifying the severity of patient conditions. Automatic recognition of state and feelings help in identifying patient symptoms to take immediate adequate action and providing a patient-centric medical plan tailored to a patient's state. In this paper, we propose a framework for pain-level detection for deployment in the United Arab Emirates and assess its performance using the most used approaches in the literature. Our results show that a deployment of a pain-level deep learning detection framework is promising in identifying the pain level accurately.

The low-altitude economy (LAE), as a new economic paradigm, plays an indispensable role in cargo transportation, healthcare, infrastructure inspection, and especially post-disaster communication. Specifically, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as one of the core technologies of the LAE, can be deployed to provide communication coverage, facilitate data collection, and relay data for trapped users, thereby significantly enhancing the efficiency of post-disaster response efforts. However, conventional UAV self-organizing networks exhibit low reliability in long-range cases due to their limited onboard energy and transmit ability. Therefore, in this paper, we design an efficient and robust UAV-swarm enabled collaborative self-organizing network to facilitate post-disaster communications. Specifically, a ground device transmits data to UAV swarms, which then use collaborative beamforming (CB) technique to form virtual antenna arrays and relay the data to a remote access point (AP) efficiently. Then, we formulate a rescue-oriented post-disaster transmission rate maximization optimization problem (RPTRMOP), aimed at maximizing the transmission rate of the whole network. Given the challenges of solving the formulated RPTRMOP by using traditional algorithms, we propose a two-stage optimization approach to address it. In the first stage, the optimal traffic routing and the theoretical upper bound on the transmission rate of the network are derived. In the second stage, we transform the formulated RPTRMOP into a variant named V-RPTRMOP based on the obtained optimal traffic routing, aimed at rendering the actual transmission rate closely approaches its theoretical upper bound by optimizing the excitation current weight and the placement of each participating UAV via a diffusion model-enabled particle swarm optimization (DM-PSO) algorithm. Several designs of 1.2kV-rated 4H-SiC PiN diodes and Junction Barrier Schottky (JBS) diodes have been successfully fabricated with various P+ implantation conditions resulting in different junction profiles. P+ regions were implanted at both room temperature and elevated temperature (600C) to monitor the generation of Basal Plane Dislocations (BPDs) and study their impact on device long term reliability. It was found that, when the dose in the deeper portion of the junction (implemented by high energy implantations) is well suppressed, static and long-term reliability performances of room temperature implanted devices can be maintained similar to those of high temperature implanted devices. © 2022 IEEE.

Speech enhancement plays an essential role in various applications, and the integration of visual information has been demonstrated to bring substantial advantages. However, the majority of current research concentrates on the examination of facial and lip movements, which can be compromised or entirely inaccessible in scenarios where occlusions occur or when the camera view is distant. Whereas contextual visual cues from the surrounding environment have been overlooked: for example, when we see a dog bark, our brain has the innate ability to discern and filter out the barking noise. To this end, in this paper, we introduce a novel task, i.e. Scene-aware Audio-Visual Speech Enhancement SAV-SE. To our best knowledge, this is the first proposal to use rich contextual information from synchronized video as auxiliary cues to indicate the type of noise, which eventually improves the speech enhancement performance. Specifically, we propose the VC-S $^{2}$ E method, which incorporates the Conformer and Mamba modules for their complementary strengths. Extensive experiments are conducted on public MUSIC, AVSpeech and AudioSet datasets, where the results demonstrate the superiority of VC-S $^{2}$ E over other competitive methods.
