The Large Scale data Facility (LSDF) was started at the Karlsruhe Institute of technology (KIT) end of 2009 to address the growing need for value-added storage services for its data intensive experiments. The main focus of the project is to provide scientific communities producing data collections in the tera - to petabyte range with the necessary hardware infrastructure as well as with adequate value-added services and support for the data management, processing, and preservation. In this work we describe the project's infrastructure and services design, as well as its meta data handling. Both community specific meta data schemes, a meta data repository, an application programming interface and a graphical tool for accessing the resources were developed to further support the processing workflows of the partner scientific communities. The analysis workflow of high throughput microscopy images for studying biomedical processes is described in detail.

Decision support system for the diagnosis of urological dysfunctions based on fuzzy logic

In this article a fuzzy system with capabilities for urological diagnosing is proposed. This system is specialized towards the diagnosis of urological dysfunctions with neurological etiology. For this reason the system specifies all the neural centres involved in both the urological phases, voiding and micturition. The fuzzy system allows to classify every dysfunction of all patients by means of their membership functions. The results of the experiments show that the fuzzy approach allows the diagnosis of urological dysfunctions from the relationship between neural centres and their associated neurological dysfunction. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

MicroRNAs can regulate hundreds of target genes and play a pivotal role in a broad range of biological process. However, relatively little is known about how these highly connected miRNAs-target networks are remodelled in the context of various diseases. Here we examine the dynamic alteration of context-specific miRNA regulation to determine whether modified microRNAs regulation on specific biological processes is a useful information source for predicting cancer prognosis. A new concept, Context-specific miRNA activity (CoMi activity) is introduced to describe the statistical difference between the expression level of a miRNA's target genes and non-targets genes within a given gene set (context).

We report on trace gas and major atmospheric constituents results obtained by the Vehicle Cabin Atmosphere Monitor (VCAM) during operations aboard the International Space Station (ISS). VCAM is an autonomous environmental monitor based on a miniature gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer. It was flown to the ISS on shuttle mission STS-131 and commenced operations on 6/10/10. VCAM provides measurements of ppb-to-ppm levels of volatile trace-gas constituents, and of the atmospheric major constituents (nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide) in a space vehicle or station. It is designed to operate autonomously and maintenance-free, approximately once per day, with a self-contained gas supply sufficient for a one-year lifetime. VCAM is designed to detect and identify 90% of the target compounds at their 180-day Spacecraft Maximum Allowable Concentration levels. © 2011 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

gLite is one of the largest distributed computing infrastructures in operation. It provides access to hundreds of different clusters - all installed and maintained in different ways. This paper analyses the difficulties which users typically experience when moving from their own workstation via clusters or supercomputers to the grid. Based on that analysis, this paper presents tools, which helps to overcome this gap and introduces an advanced command line interface to the grid.

In this article we evaluate the work out of artificial neural networks as tools for helping and support in the medical diagnosis. In particular we compare the usability of one supervised and two unsupervised neural network architectures for medical diagnoses of lower urinary tract dysfunctions. The purpose is to develop a system that aid urologists in obtaining diagnoses, which will yield improved diagnostic accuracy and lower medical treatment costs. The clinical study has been carried out using the medical registers of patients with dysfunctions in the lower urinary tract. The current system is able to distinguish and classify dysfunctions as areflexia, hyperreflexia, obstruction of the lower urinary tract and patients free from dysfunction.

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound can be used to detect circulating cerebral emboli. Embolic signals have characteristic transient chirps suitable for wavelet analysis. We have implemented and evaluated the first online selective wavelet transient enhancement filter to amplify embolic signals in a preprocessing system. Our approach is similar to wavelet de-noising for signal enhancement, but, in order to retain blood flow information, we do not use traditional threshold methods. The selective wavelet amplifier uses the matched filter properties of wavelets to enhance embolic signals significantly and improve classification performance using a novel noise tolerant approach. Even the smallest embolic signals are enhanced. We show an increase of over 2dB (on average) in embolic signal strength and a significant improvement in detection accuracy when our filter is applied both to a commercially available detection system and an in house frequency based detection system. The implementation of the filter is simplified by using an optimized matrix form. The block matrix form is significantly faster than the normal recursive discrete wavelet transform implementation.

In this article we propose the development of a tool for helping in the medical diagnosis using neural networks, in particular the multilayer perceptron. This new tool is meant to help the urologists in obtaining an automatic diagnosis for complex multi-variable systems, and to avoid painful and costly medical treatments. The clinical study has been carried out using the medical registers of patients with dysfunctions in the lower urinary tract. The system is able to distinguish and classify dysfunctions as arreflexive, hyper-reflexive, and effort incontinence. Moreover, it is able to predict whether there is presence of dysfunction or not. The results of the experiments display a high percentage of certainty of about 85 %. © 2006 IEEE.

One crucial aspect of privacy preserving frequent itemset mining is the fact that the mining process deals with a trade-off: privacy and accuracy, which are typically contradictory, and improving one usually incurs a cost in the other. One alternative to address this particular problem is to look for a balance between hiding restrictive patterns and disclosing nonrestrictive ones. In this paper, we propose a new framework for enforcing privacy in mining frequent itemsets. We combine, in a single framework, techniques for efficiently hiding restrictive patterns: a transaction retrieval engine relying on an inverted file and Boolean queries; and a set of algorithms to "sanitize" a database. In addition, we introduce performance measures for mining frequent itemsets that quantify the fraction of raining patterns which are preserved after sanitizing a database. We also report the results of a performance evaluation of our research prototype and an analysis of the results.
