A bicriteria structural optimization problem, where computing mappings from the design space into the criterion space requires solving nonlinear plate bending equations, is considered. Since the calculations of the mappings are independent of each other, the mappings can be easily evaluated in parallel and they can be effectively solved using loosely coupled computer clusters or computing grids. In this work, the mappings are computed using the grid computing platform, computation being controlled by the local optimizer employing the scalarizing achievement function method of Wierzbicki. Modeling the laminated composite structure is based on a facet approximation of the midsurface and a Reissner-Mindlin-Von Kármán type plate equations. The potential energy functional where the linearized strain tensor has been replaced by the nonlinear functions, i.e., the Von Kármán model for large deformation has been formulated. The differential equilibrium equations of the energy minimization problem are obtained using standard variational calculus and integration by parts. In the computations these non-linear equations are solved iteratively by Riks' method with Crisfield's elliptical constraint for arc length. The linearized equations are then discretized by the finite element method. In the postbuckling region the algorithm follows the principal equilibrium path with the minimal stiffness. The minimum weight solutions for minimizing the maximum displacement of the FE solution and maximizing the laminate FPF margin are searched. The design variables are the number of layers and a discrete set of allowable angles for layer orientations. Optimization is carried out using a deterministic search process, where the lay-up configurations are generated iteratively in the design space from the selected design points of the population at the preceding cycle. Information is one of the most valuable resources in today's society, therefore the process of information seeking in electronic environments is one of the most crucial processes that can help a citizen to achieve a better quality of life. However, access to information in electronic forms is so far difficult for blind people, but new publicly available electronic environments, particularly the World Wide Web (WWW), provide great potential to overcome the difficulties that blind people have in accessing information. In this paper, we present BrowserTree, a specialised voice web browser that we have designed and developed for blind users of the WWW. BrowserTree offers to an unsighted user all the facilities (e.g. make bookmarks, follow links) that a sighted user has using a "normal" web browser. BrowserTree's main difference in comparison to other specialised voice web browsers is our effort to provide a "reading mode" which allows an unsighted user to browse a large WWW document at a "concept" level utilising existing structure of a web page. Using this reading mode the user can acquire quicker a better outlook-overview of the web page under examination.

As microarchitectural and system complexity grows, comprehending system behavior becomes increasingly difficult, and often requires obtaining and sifting through voluminous event traces or coordinating results from multiple, non-localized sources. Owl is a proposed framework that overcomes limitations faced by traditional performance counters and monitoring facilities in dealing with such complexity by pervasively deploying programmable monitoring elements throughout a system. The design exploits reconfigurable or programmable logic to realize hardware monitors located at event sources, such as memory buses. These monitors run and writeback results autonomously with respect to the CPU, mitigating the system impact of interrupt-driven monitoring or the need to communicate irrelevant events to higher levels of the system. The monitors are designed to snoop any kind of system transaction, e.g., within the core, on a bus, across the wire, or within I/O devices. Copyright 2005 ACM.
