The convergence of a dual algorithm for nonlinear programming

A dual algorithm based on the smooth function proposed by Polyak (1988) is constructed for solving nonlinear programming problems with inequality constraints. It generates a sequence of points converging locally to a Kuhn-Tucker point by solving an unconstrained minimizer of a smooth potential function with a parameter. We study the relationship between eigenvalues of the Hessian of this smooth potential function and the parameter, which is useful for analyzing the effectiveness of the dual algorithm. © 2000 Korean Society for Computational & applied Mathematics and Korean SIGCAM.

Building Decision Support Systems in discretionary legal domains

The construction of intelligent legal decision support systems in discretionary domains will enhance consistent decision-making leading to increased confidence in the justice system and provide support for alternative dispute resolution. To build such intelligent decision support systems, discretionary legal domains are classified into four (not necessarily distinct) categories. Domains in which the number of outputs is limited are shown to involve the exercise of the strongest form of discretion. These findings are illustrated through four examples of discretionary legal domains-property division following divorce, the sentencing of criminals, refugee law and the welfare of children following divorce. The paper also discusses how to evaluate discretionary systems and the benefits of building discretionary systems.

We describe tools that are particularly suited to the development of knowledge based systems in the domain of law. The first tool is a conceptual model that supports the categorization of legal tasks. Once categorized, tasks can be mapped onto to the most appropriate artificial reasoning model (if any) for computer based implementation. This scheme is based on theoretical and cultural perspectives that have currency in the legal domain yet may have less relevance in other domains. The second tool, which we call the sequenced transition network, involves reducing the involvement of a knowledge engineer so that domain experts can more easily develop and maintain their own knowledge bases.

This paper describes an algorithm and provides test results for surrogate-model-based optimization. In this type of optimization, the objective and constraint functions are represented by global surrogates, i.e. response models, of the true problem responses. In general, guarantees of global optimality are not possible. However, a robust surrogate-model-based optimization method is presented here that has good global search properties, and proven local convergence results. This paper describes methods for handling three key issues in surrogate-model-based optimization. These issues are maintaining a balance of effort between global design space exploration and local optimizer region refinement, maintaining good surrogate model conditioning as points pile up in local regions, and providing a provably convergent method for ensuring local optimality. © 2000 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Competition generated the requirement of quick decisions at engineering activities. As a consequence, application of advanced computer modeling in engineering design needs application of intelligent computer methods to assist human decision making. A powerful CAD/CAM system with a comprehensive range of sophisticated modeling tools for describing engineering objects and programming tools for creating modeling procedures constitutes an appropriate environment to accept intelligent methods. The only way of survival for companies producing mechanical products on the competitive edge seems application of advanced modeling together with intelligent decision making. Much modeling, problem solving, database handling, visualization and other methods are involved in a typical computer-based engineering process. This process recently relies upon an integrated set of modeling tools and an integrated product database. Involving intelligent computer methods is a great challenge in this field. This paper surveys advanced modeling from the point of view of application of intelligent methods, It is organized as follows. A characterization of state of the art in advanced engineering modeling reveals important issues to be discussed in this paper. Following this, worldwide network-based group work of engineers is discussed. Human computer interaction (HCI) and network communication methods as important aspects of computer-aided engineering are outlined. Then recent development results in modeling of mechanical systems with special emphasis on integrated modeling of mechanical products, especially well-engineered shapes, are introduced. Finally, virtual manufacturing as an area of involving intelligent methods in CAD/CAM technology is discussed. © 2000 Fuji technology Press. All rights reserved.

Performance prediction is useful in helping parallel programmers answer questions such as speedup scalability. Performance prediction for parallel simulation requires first working out the performance analyzer algorithms for specific simulation protocols. In order for the prediction results to be close to the results from actual parallel executions, there are further considerations when implementing the analyzer. These include (a) equivalence of code between the sequential program and parallel program, and (b) system effects (e.g. cache miss rates and synchronization overheads in an actual parallel execution). This paper describes our investigations into these issues on a performance analyzer for a conservative, "super-step" (synchronous) simulation protocol. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Portable and effcient ways for calling numerical high performance software libraries from HPF programs are investigated. The methods suggested utilize HPF’s EXTRINSIC mechanism and are independent of implementation details of HPF compilers. Two prototypical examples are used to illustrate these techniques. Highly optimized Blas routines are utilized for local computations: (i) in parallel multiplication of matrices, and (ii) in parallel Cholesky factorization. Both implementations turn out to be very efficient and show significant improvements over standard HPF implementations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Toxicity in a water column following the stratification of a cyanobacterial population development in a calm lake

Cyanobacteria, including the genera Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Microcystis, and Oscillatoria, are known to release or have the potential to release phycotoxins into the water. Indeed, there are documented cases of both animal and human intoxication. Data obtained from field observations and laboratory experiments demonstrate a correlation between the development of the cyanobacterial population and the level of phycotoxin present in the water, though it should be noted that not all cyanobacterial blooms are toxic. The development of cyanobacterial populations is described by a dynamical model which accounts for factors that include algal growth, degradation, and light-driven buoyancy under the assumption of an isothermal, calm, and nutrient-abundant lake. A semiempirical mathematical model for water-column toxicity is developed and is used in conjunction with an improved result for the density of the cyanobacteria population obtained from the dynamical model. Light transfer through the water column, light absorption, the implication of the differentiated attenuation of light by the water, and its diurnal effect on the cyanobacteria population is considered. The result of which is a plausible description of the seasonal development of cyanobacteria populations and of the toxicity within the water body. © Oxford University Press 1999.
