Pre-ictal causal connectivity reveals the epileptic network characteristics for deep brain stimulation

Deep brain stimulation of anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT-DBS) is an effective clinical treatment for drug-resistant focal epilepsy. However, the complex epileptic network characteristics underlying ANT-stimulation effectiveness remain unknown, owing to currently unclear connectivity between ANT and seizure-related cortex in pre-ictal periods. Here, we developed a novel individualized pre-ictal ANT-cortical tripartite connectivity network (PANT-CTCNet), aiming to reveal epileptic network characteristics using intracranial stereo-electroencephalography (sEEG) recordings in five patients with focal epilepsy for 90 trials. Each trial represented a pre-ictal or post-stimulus sEEG duration, which was used to construct the epileptic network. By employing conditional Granger causality, we constructed individualized ANT-cortical connectivity networks and found a common epileptic network centred on ANT closely connected with seizure-related cortex in pre-ictal periods. After ANT stimulation for clinical validation, strengthened pre-ictal connectivity between ANT and epileptogenic zones led to significant decline in the causal intensity of epileptic networks. The PANT-CTCNet can give a quantitative reference for clinical preoperative evaluation of patient suitability for ANT-DBS treatment. These findings regarding epileptic network characteristics provide theoretical basis in the selection of optimal surgical candidates for personalized ANT-DBS.

Data deduplication is a crucial technique in the field of data compression that aims to eliminate redundant copies of recurring data. This technique has gained significant popularity in the realm of cloud storage due to its ability to effectively reduce storage requirements and optimize bandwidth utilization. To ensure the safeguarding of sensitive data while simultaneously facilitating deduplication, researchers have put forth the concept of convergent encryption as a potential solution. This technique involves encrypting the data prior to its outsourcing, thereby enhancing the confidentiality of the information. In this work, an earnest endeavor is undertaken to formally tackle the issue of authorized data deduplication, with the aim of enhancing data security. Our approach combines the Diffie-Hellman algorithm and symmetrical external decision to protect and popularize information, ensuring end-to-end encryption to encourage user adoption of cloud storage. The proposed model employs block-level deduplication and guarantees the randomness of ciphertexts by generating encryption keys using the Diffie-Hellman algorithm. This method effectively counters both internal and external brute-force attacks, enhancing data security while reducing computational costs. An extensive experimentation is carried out to demonstrate that our approach is particularly beneficial in scenarios with multiple privilege sets. Overall, the proposed model offers an elaborate framework that maintains data privacy and strengthens security measures, contributing to a more efficient and secure cloud-based document search. © 2023 The Author(s)

To ensure operational safety and effective utilization of a battery pack it is important to determine temperature level and temperature distribution across its battery cells. This paper as the first of a series of papers, presents a battery pack segment ls7p testing environment for the purpose of measuring, not only the temperature of each cell, but also the voltage and current of the entire segment. The segment’s cells are thoroughly monitored with three temperature sensors per cell to get the most accurate thermal distribution available. After developing and building the battery pack segment, it is placed in a temperature controlled test chamber, so it can be tested at different temperature levels. Future articles, will describe the segment’s thermal image during charging and discharging. The goal of this paper is to present the accuracy of this testing environment, this must be done without charging or discharging the segment. It is necessary to measure and calculate the temperature sensor’s characteristics, accuracy and offsets, as well as the monitoring system’s sampling time, lag time and any lag time that is generated in the data processing step. With this information, certain measurement compensations can be made (if necessary) for future tests and experiments.

Decentralized Parametric Stability Certificates for Grid-Forming Converter Control

We propose a decentralized framework for guaranteeing the small-signal stability of future power systems with grid-forming converters. Our approach leverages dynamic loop-shifting techniques to compensate for the lack of passivity in the network dynamics and establishes decentralized parametric stability certificates, depending on the local device-level controls and incorporating the effects of the network dynamics. By following practical tuning rules, we are able to ensure plug-and-play operation without centralized coordination. Unlike prior works, our approach accommodates coupled frequency and voltage dynamics, incorporates network dynamics, and does not rely on specific network configurations or operating points, offering a general and scalable solution for the integration of power-electronics-based devices into future power systems. We validate our theoretical stability results through numerical case studies in a high-fidelity simulation model. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Speech-Forensics: Towards Comprehensive Synthetic Speech Dataset Establishment and Analysis

Detecting synthetic from real speech is increasingly crucial due to the risks of misinformation and identity impersonation. While various datasets for synthetic speech analysis have been developed, they often focus on specific areas, limiting their utility for comprehensive research. To fill this gap, we propose the Speech-Forensics dataset by extensively covering authentic, synthetic, and partially forged speech samples that include multiple segments synthesized by different high-quality algorithms. Moreover, we propose a TEmporal Speech LocalizaTion network, called TEST, aiming at simultaneously performing authenticity detection, multiple fake segments localization, and synthesis algorithms recognition, without any complex post-processing. TEST effectively integrates LSTM and Transformer to extract more powerful temporal speech representations and utilizes dense prediction on multi-scale pyramid features to estimate the synthetic spans. Our model achieves an average mAP of 83.55% and an EER of 5.25% at the utterance level. At the segment level, it attains an EER of 1.07% and a 92.19% F1 score. These results highlight the model’s robust capability for a comprehensive analysis of synthetic speech, offering a promising avenue for future research and practical applications in this field. Energy storage systems based on supercapacitors have become attractive solutions for improving elevator efficiency. Electrical energy is stored while the elevator drive is running in generator mode and used when needed. The energy storage system can also be charged in standby mode and used to reduce power peaks during start-up. Therefore, the energy storage system should be appropriately sized, which is not trivial since elevator usage is stochastic in nature. In this paper, the effect of energy storage system size on the efficiency of regenerative energy reuse is analyzed based on a measurement study. Measurements were performed for one week on faculty elevators under real conditions. The data obtained from the measurements were analyzed, and the results of the analysis of energy consumption, elevator starts, and potential energy savings were presented for all three elevators and the group. The elevator energy storage system was emulated in MATLAB with and without energy consumption balancing which is used to reduce peak power. The efficiency of regenerative energy reuse is calculated for a wide range of energy storage sizes, both with and without energy consumption balancing, for all individual elevators and the group.

This paper proposes the design of a repetitive controller along with capacitor voltage feedforward applied to an LCL filter active power filter (APF). The repetitive controller can operate in systems with disturbances exhibiting high harmonic content and the feedforward action can reshape the output impedance of the APF. The conservative power theory (CPT) is proposed to obtain reference signals for the purpose of total mitigation of unwanted currents. The proposed technique ensures that only the active current flows through the electrical grid, while maintaining the stability of the APF-grid system through passivity theory. Finally, the proposed control strategy is validated using the Matlab/Simulink® software under several conditions of grid imbalances and harmonic distortions.

This paper analyzes application of saturable transformer for zero current detection in GaN based converter at a switching frequency above 100 kilohertz. The design of the transformer is discussed in a simplified way, development of experimental prototype of the transformer has been given. Zero current detection (ZCD) has been tested on experimental prototype of DC-DC converter. Delay times introduced by the transformer, detection circuit and digital control system have been analyzed. The efficiency of the converter by introducing triple-mode switching with ZCD circuit has been investigated. The results show that the summary delay is at least 250 nanoseconds and at such frequencies the core heats up significantly and lowers efficiency which limits the application of the circuit for switching frequencies above 250 kilohertz.

Despite the impressive performance achieved by sign language recognition systems based on skeleton information, our research has uncovered their vulnerability to malicious attacks. In response to this challenge, we present an adversarial attack specifically designed to sign language recognition models that rely on extracted human skeleton data as features. Our attack aims to assess the robustness and sensitivity of these models, and we propose adversarial training techniques to enhance their resilience. Moreover, we conduct transfer experiments using the generated adversarial samples to demonstrate the transferability of these adversarial examples across different models. Additionally, by conducting experiments on the sensitivity of sign language recognition models, we identify the optimal experimental parameter settings for achieving the most effective attacks. This research significantly contributes to future investigations into the security of sign language recognition. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
