The increasing complexity of software and hardware resources and frequentative interaction among function components make fault-tolerant very challenging in pervasive computing system. In our paper, we propose a novel framework of self-adaptive fault-tolerant mechanism for pervasive computing environments. In our approach, the self-adaptive fault-tolerant mechanism is dynamically built according to various types of detected fault based on continuous monitoring, analysis of the component state. We put forward the architecture of fault-tolerant system and the policy-based fault-tolerant scheme, which adopt three-dimensional array of core features to capture spatial and temporal variability and the Event-Condition-Action rules. The mentioned mechanism has been designed and implemented on a prototype of office pervasive computing application systems, called POPCAS System. We have performed the experiments to evaluate the efficiency of the fault-tolerant mechanism. The results of the experiments show that the proposed mechanism can obviously improve reliability of the POPCAS System. © 2012 IEEE.

Establishing performance metrics is a key part of a systematic design process. In particular, specifying metrics useful for quantifying performance in the ongoing efforts towards biomolecular circuit design is an important problem. Here we address this issue for the design of a fast biomolecular step response that is uniform across different cells and widely different environmental conditions using a combination of simple mathematical models and experimental measurements using single-cell time-lapse microscopy. We evaluate two metrics, the difference of the step response from an ideal step and the relative difference between multiple realizations of the step response, that can provide a single number to measure performance. We use a model of protein production-degradation to show that these performance metrics correlate with response features of speed and noise. Finally, we work through an experimental methodology to estimate these metrics for step responses that have been acquired for inducible protein expression circuits in E. coli. These metrics will be useful to evaluate biomolecular step responses, as well as for setting similar performance measures for other design goals.

This paper analyzes some basic issues involving the application of discontinuous control techniques for controlling fractional order systems (FOS). With reference to a simple class of SISO perturbed processes, we compare the performance of two distinct approaches, namely the “fractional sliding manifold” (FSM) approach, and the “fractional dynamic input extension” (FDIE) approach. The latter, which is the main new contribution of this paper, is shown to provide for the finite time convergence property of the systems' state. Remarkably, this approach also attenuates the chattering phenomenon by leading to a continuous, although obviously non-smooth, control action. The performance of the two methodologies under investigation are determined by means of Lyapunov approach. Additionally, we derive two new results involving the application of second-order sliding mode control techniques in the context of SISO FOS, and the application of the unit-vector methodology for controlling uncertain multivariable FOS. The presented analysis is supported by simulation results.

We put forward the architecture of fault-tolerant system and the context-based and policy-based fault-tolerant scheme, which adopts ontology-based context modeling method and the Event-Condition-Action execution rules. The mechanism has been designed and implemented as self-adaptive fault-tolerant middleware, shortly called SAFTM, on a preliminary prototype for a dynamic ubiquitous computing environment such as mobile ad hoc network. We have performed the experiments to evaluate the efficiency of the fault-tolerant mechanism. The results of the experiments show that the performance of the self-adaptive fault tolerant mechanism is realistic. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a novel face authentication approach based on affine scale invariant feature transform (ASIFT) and structural similarity (SSIM). The ASIFT descriptor defines key points which are used to match the gallery and probe face images. The matched pairs of key points are filtered based on the location of points in the gallery face image. Then the similarity between sub-images at a preserved pair of matched points is measured by Structural Similarity (SSIM). A mean SSIM (MSSIM) at all pairs of points is computed for authentication. The proposed approach is tested on FERET, CMU-PIE and AR databases with only one image for enrollment. Comparative results on the AR database show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art approaches. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper describes a collaborative modelling exercise using the DESTECS framework. The DESTECS approach allows engineers and software designers to collaborate to produce system models that contain a discrete-event (DE) model of a controller and continuous-time (CT) model of a plant. We call these models co-models and call their execution co-simulation. The DESTECS tool couples existing DE and CT tools (Overture and 20-sim, respectively) allowing engineers to use paradigms and tools with which they are familiar, while collaborating to construct these shared system models. The work involved collaborative modelling of a line-following robot. We report on both the details of the models and experience in producing them.

Taken it into consideration that human has a great deal of experiences and knowledge of hand postures, if these operating skills of postures are applied to HCI, the simple and convenient human-computer interface can be expected. In fact, tracking, recognition and interaction based on 3D freehand are a part of the cores in our virtual assembly system, but it is a challenging task to track 3D freehand in real-time because of high dimensionality of 3D full hand model. A novel framework for 3D freehand tracking is put forward in this paper. Firstly, we model and investigate this problem under our virtual assembly system (VAS), so as to decrease the arbitrariness and complexity of this issue. Secondly, we put emphasis on building cognitive and behavioral model (CBM) for users in VAS. Thirdly, we research on the way to track 3D freehand based on CBM. The main contributions of this paper are that we propose a new CBM, TPTM model, provide a way to connect users and computer for effective interaction, and present a real-time freehand tracking algorithm. Based on TPTM model, the prediction, the number of particles, the way and scope of sampling, are optimized. TPTM model not only explain behavioral characteristics for users but also can effectively guide the design of freehand tracking algorithm. TPTM model also provides a data structure that can facilitate the implementation of the tracking algorithm. Our experimental results show that the proposed approach raises the quality of each sampled particle or avoid sampling "poor" particles which appear with low probability in each frame, and it tracks 3D freehand in real-time with high accuracy. The number of the drawn particles is reduced up to 5 and the tracking speed increase up to 81 ms per frame. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The effects of the source/drain (S/D) to gate overlap on the electrical characteristics of pentacene organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) are reported. The S/D to gate overlap dimension was varied by adjusting the gate width, while the channel length and width were fixed. The threshold voltage was found to decrease on increasing the overlap dimension;in contrast, the field-effect mobility increased. These characteristic variations are explained on aspects of charge injection and transport properties in pentacene OTFTs, due to the presence of S/D to gate overlaps. The results demonstrate the significant effect of the overlap on the OTFT performance. © 2012 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

Epidemic reemergence in adaptive complex networks

The dynamic nature of a system gives rise to dynamical features of epidemic spreading, such as oscillation and bistability. In this paper, by studying the epidemic spreading in growing networks, in which susceptible nodes may adaptively break the connections with infected ones yet avoid being isolated, we reveal a phenomenon, epidemic reemergence, where the number of infected nodes is incubated at a low level for a long time and then erupts for a short time. The process may repeat several times before the infection finally vanishes. Simulation results show that all three factors, namely the network growth, the connection breaking, and the isolation avoidance, are necessary for epidemic reemergence to happen. We present a simple theoretical analysis to explain the process of reemergence in detail. Our study may offer some useful insights, helping explain the phenomenon of repeated epidemic explosions.

Measurement system design of an imaging electromagnetic flow meter

Electromagnetic flow meters based on the principles of Faraday's laws of induction have been used successfully in many industries. In order to achieve velocity profile measurements in single phase and multiphase flows with non-uniform velocity profiles, a novel Imaging Electromagnetic Flow meter (IEF) has been developed which is described in this paper. The novel electromagnetic flow meter uses a microcontroller as the processing core to achieve the function of driving the uniform magnetic field, acquiring voltage signals with electronic system, matrix inversion calculation and result display. The work undertaken in the paper demonstrates that an imaging electromagnetic flow meter for liquid velocity profile measurement is an instrument that is highly suited for control via a microcontroller.
