This paper deals with an analysis of applicability, capabilities, benefits and pitfalls of using a virtual potential field approach to autonomously planning trajectories in non-communicating autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV-s). Virtual potentials represent an approach to this problem with cross-layer design features. Examples of different layers of control that can be achieved with the same fundamental approach are: obstacle-avoidance, energy-optimal trajectories, forming up with other moving agents, controlled formation fragmentation into well-posed sub-formation etc. This paper shows, on the basis of extensive simulated experiments, that such a trajectory planner based on virtual potentials, guarantees good extendibility, scalability and performance in a hard-real-time hardware-in-the-loop system. ©2007 IEEE.

The work presented in this paper deals with the process of transfer function identification by using self-oscillation method (autotuning identification method). The algorithm is given in a general matrix form and some modifications are introduced. The modifications of the algorithm include augmentation of the initial algorithm for Type k systems, systems with delays and discrete-time systems. The paper also includes simulation examples which describe the introduced modifications. Apart from being rather simple, this method is applicable to real systems. Its greatest advantage is quick identification of a transfer function (depends on the system). ©2007 IEEE.

Observations of the long-term geoelectric potential (LTGP) difference are presented in this paper. The data have been collected during a three-year (2004-2006) investigating period. Moreover, this paper constitutes a continuation of two previously published works with eleven-year (1993-2003) experimental data. For data logging purposes, an automatic system for collection, transfer and processing of geoelectric measurements operates at the Seismological Laboratory of the University of Patras. The analysis of these data using Lyapunov exponents and Takens estimator confirm their quite chaotic behavior. The Lyapunov exponents have also been calculated for short periods of twenty days, i.e. ten days before and ten days after the earthquakes occurred during this three-year period. By thorough examination of the resulting Lyapunov spectrums, it seems that these are subject to possible changes prior to an earthquake. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Sperry and Minorski are names synonymous with the development of the first steering autopilots and it is well known that their pioneering work and seminal publications led to the introduction of the three-term or proportional-integral- derivative (PID) controller for automatic ship steering. Despite the efforts and enthusiasm of numerous researchers, from all areas of control engineering, to persuade industry to adopt more sophisticated controller designs, PID controllers remain the industry preference and industry standard for automatic control systems. The paper sets the scene with a review of the early developments of automatic control systems for ship steering, which led to Sperry's automatic pilot. This is followed by an overview of developments in roll stabilisation;integrated ship steering and roll stabilisation;unmanned underwater vehicles and unmanned surface vessels. Consideration of over 700 papers presented the twelve conferences and workshops sponsored by the IFAC Technical Committee on Marine Systems in the period 1992 to 2007 is used to track recent trends in marine control systems and as the basis for some thoughts on possible future directions for the marine control community. Current research work on the development of a nanohandling cell in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) is presented. An experimental setup is shown, in which two microrobots operate in the vacuum chamber of an SEM. In order to enable automatic nanohandling, a modular control system architecture is proposed. Different microrobots can be integrated in a flexible manner using a common control interface. The system easily scales up for more complex robot and sensor setups. Parallel execution of open and closed-loop control tasks can be performed. The functionality of the robot cell is exemplified by handling and mechanical characterization of carbon nanotubes (CNT). ©2007 IEEE.

Bio-modeling has important role in virtual reality in telemedicine providing base for simulations and decisions. Virtual reality is based on sequences of volumetric images whose motion is captured in time. These data sets are typically very large in size and demand a great amount of resources for storage and transmission. Therefore it is necessary to compress this data both fast and efficiently. We will propose combination of lossless and lossy compression models to obtain toset demands.

The joint design of processes and control is an integration technique that incorporates control requirements in the process design stage. This paper presents an integrated design methodology and illustrate it with an alternative design for a real plant of activated sludge processing. The process design obtained is not only optimum from the economic point of view, but exhibits certain previously fixed dynamic characteristics. The point of operation and the size of the processing units are obtained through mathematical programming, together with the parameters of the controller. © Copyright 2007 IFAC.

We propose a modification of the existing algorithm for computing the one-step robust sets for the discrete-time piecewise affine (DTPWA) systems subject to additive polytope-bounded uncertainties. In the old algorithm the Minkowski set difference between a union of polytopes (the so-called P-collection) and a polytope needs to be computed, which in turn calls twice for the computation of the set difference between a polytope and a P-collection. These set operations become computationally very demanding with the increasing number of polytopes in the P-collection and thus limit the practical applicability of the algorithm. In this paper we propose a more efficient procedure that avoids explicit evaluation of the Minkowski set difference. Our algorithm, on average, significantly reduces the complexity of the computation. We illustrate this on several examples of DTPWA systems for which the maximal robust positively invariant set is computed. © 2007 EUCA.

Autonomic computing aims to embed automation in IT management software such that it can adapt to changes in the configuration, provisioning, protection, and resource utilization variations of the IT infrastructure at run time. It is, therefore, almost natural to consider this control software framework as being designed with control principles in mind. One of the research trends considers autonomic computing as a control system that resolves constraints related to the optimal usage of resources based on external requests made by users or processes in a reactive way. In this paper, a real-time reference architecture is introduced in which components implementing functions of real-time system elements or blocks such as transducers, controllers, and actuators are designed. The architecture of the autonomic computing software also contains components that implement functionalities specific to real-time systems. The transducers, controllers, and actuators are thus connected via real-time pattern components such as concurrency, priority, and reliability patterns. © 2007 IEEE.

This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included.
