In a large number of applications fuzzy controllers have replaced existing linear controllers and brought new quality of control. The design of fuzzy controllers has a heuristic character and therefore, the setting of fuzzy controller parameters may become a tedious, time consuming job. The paper presents a method for initial setting of fuzzy controllers based on the use of state space trajectories associated with controller inputs. The described state space-based design approach does not depend on a type of emulated controller, so both linear and nonlinear controllers, including a human operator, can be transformed into an adequate fuzzy control function. The initial setting algorithm has been successfully tested by simulations in Matlab.

Multi- Spectral Fusion focused on the task of image enhancement by processing raw data collected at various electromagnetic bands via passive sensors. Passive spectral sensors collect information about the scene based on the inherently reflected or emitted energy of the scene and is represented by spectral distributions and intensities. These systems can be designed so that they provide collocated information through common optics or other means (algorithms). This paper addresses the issue of Multi-Spectral Pixel-Level Fusion to enhance the visual quality of the "combined" (fused) image data as compared to that of each single spectral band image data. We propose a Knowledgebased Fusion methodology. We also make the implicit assumption that visually superior image data are also better image data for processing by most types of algorithms © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper we describe a procedure that exploits geometric properties of state space in the investigation of the system stability. Although this method is cumbersome, its practical value becomes clear in the situation when state space is reduced to a phase plane, which is the case in a second-order system. Then phase plane analysis offers well known procedures (especially in case f(.) is linear) for the determination of the system stability. Simulation results, obtained by implementation of the proposed method on the fuzzy controller design, are given at the end of the paper

Underwater vehicles are highly nonlinear and complex systems, that makes designing autopilots extremely difficult. This paper presents autotuning as a method for tuning parameters of a micro-ROV autopilot. The main benefit of this procedure is that the model of the process does not have to be known. Autotuning is often used for industrial processes but not on marine vessels. This procedure, which is performed in closed-loop, is completely automated and enables the operator to retune an autopilot whenever ROV performance is degraded (due to different operating points, tether influence, currents, etc.). In this article we use already known different autotuning recommendations (primarily designed for type 0 processes) with some modifications which we recommend for micro-ROVs. We also give results of using different types of PID controllers, whose parameters are being tuned. A real life demonstration on a VideoRay Pro II micro-ROV is provided

Automatic inspection in today's manufacturing is critical to be competitive. In this paper, experimental results from the application of digital filters for defects detection in paper pulp production are shown. These filters have been automatically generated by means of a convolutional neural architecture, that uses a modified back-propagation algorithm. The main subjects discussed are: convolutional top-down spiral architecture, a tool used to automatically generate digital filters, a simple but effective modification to the back-propagation algorithm for this application, and experimental results

Channel assignment problem in cellular communication is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem. There is no exact polynomial-time solution for it and searching the whole solution space is infeasible for large problems. By defining the problem's cost function as the energy function of a chaotic Hopfield neural network, we devise a framework for finding competitive suboptimal or even optimal solutions for combinatorial optimization problem in general, and channel assignment problem in particular. In our architecture, we inject chaotic noise in order to help the network escape from local minima of the energy function while we enforce problem constraints by external inputs of neurons. Experimental results show the superiority of our method to other methods.

Event sequence arises naturally in many applications. Episode mining can discovery the knowledge hidden in the event sequence. Currently, the most influential algorithm for episode mining is WINEPI. However, it is likely to suffer from the tendency of generating too many of candidate episodes. In this paper, a novel algorithm named DRE for mining frequent episodes is presented. It studied the conditions for the events which can be pruned from the database, so the size of database is reduced gradually. The performance of algorithm DRE was evaluated and compared with WINEPI algorithm. The results demonstrate that the DRE has better performance

We present a general method to obtain convergent approximate value iteration algorithms with function approximation. The result is applicable to any arbitrary approximation architecture and generalizes existing results in the literature derived for particular approximation schemes. Additionally, we show how to obtain a convergent approximate mapping whose fixed point is the projection in the approximation space of a fixed point of the exact dynamic programming mapping with regards to a suitable subset norm. This result relies on evaluating the difference between successive iterates in the selected subset norm, which provides convergent procedures for any arbitrary approximation architecture
