The Internet of Things (IoT) and other recent advancements in communication and information technology have profoundly impacted and enhanced people's quality of life. IoT systems are vulnerable to previously unanticipated cyber threats such as denial of service, jamming, phishing, obfuscations eavesdropping, spoofing and invasions because of the widespread availability and rising demand for connected devices. The emerging cyber-physical security problem is difficult to avoid and guard against using conventional methods. Securing IoT systems calls for robust, dynamic, and current security mechanisms. When addressing emerging security concerns in cyber-physical systems (CPS), machine learning (ML) technology is often regarded as the most cutting- edge and promising option. This literature review explains how IoTs are built, looks into the many threats they face, and discusses the most up-to-date efforts being made to ensure their security using machine learning. In addition, it covers some of the research obstacles that may arise in the future while trying to implement security measures in IoT infrastructure. © 2023 IEEE.

The increase in the use of Internet of Things, otherwise IoT, has impacted numerous industries such as health, facility, and manufacturing. Although connections have become more sophisticated, security and privacy risks have also emerged through connected devices. This research focuses on the security risks posed by IoT devices and seeks to recommend measures to protect these IoT networks. Based on the analysis of the state-of-the-art, the areas that should be further secured are defined, including energy-aware security mechanisms, privacy-preserving protocols, and edge computing vulnerabilities. The results indicate that 78% of IoT devices used in healthcare facilities can be compromised to release private info to unauthorized personnel;65% of smart building systems are not secure enough when it comes to encryption. Furthermore, the research showed that by implementing artificial intelligence, organizations can decrease security threats by as much as 42 percent in IoT settings. The study then calls for a layered security solution that incorporates energy management, data protection, and the development of a comprehensive security solution for the IoT systems. Further work should be directed to the research of the flexible safety frameworks, which would allow handling new threats in terms of secure functioning of IoT networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback significantly enhances Natural Language Processing by aligning language models with human expectations. A critical factor in this alignment is the strength of reward models used during training. This study explores whether stronger reward models invariably lead to better language models. In this paper, through experiments on relevance, factuality, and completeness tasks using the QA-FEEDBACK dataset and reward models based on Longformer, we uncover a surprising paradox: language models trained with moderately accurate reward models outperform those guided by highly accurate ones. This challenges the widely held belief that stronger reward models always lead to better language models, and opens up new avenues for future research into the key factors driving model performance and how to choose the most suitable reward models. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In the realm of retail, particularly in supermarkets and hypermarkets, monitoring, product management, and stocking traditionally rely on human effort and manual labor. However, this approach often proves to be time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to errors. To address these challenges, this study proposes the implementation of computer vision and object detection technologies in the retail industry. By implementing computer vision models, the study aims to automate the process of detecting retail items on shelves, with a specific focus on a manually curated drinks dataset. To accomplish this objective, this paper performs a comparative analysis of two prominent object detection models, namely YOLO versions 8 and 9, and DETR, within the context of retail supermarket scenarios. A novel dataset comprising 2000 real-life images manually collected from retail shelves is created to assess the performance of these frameworks in accurately detecting and localizing products. The experimental findings indicate that YOLOv9 a chieved a mean average precision (mAP) score of 0.6, surpassing both DETR and YOLOv8 in terms of detection accuracy and localization capabilities.

Globally,educational institutions have reported a dramatic shift to online learning in an effort to contain the COVID-19 *** fundamental concern has been the continuance of *** a result,several novel solutions have been developed to address technical and pedagogical ***,these were not the only difficulties that students *** implemented solutions involved the operation of the educational process with less regard for students’changing circumstances,which obliged them to study from *** should be asked to provide a full list of their *** a result,student reflections,including those from Saudi Arabia,have been analysed to identify obstacles encountered during the COVID-19 ***,most of the analyses relied on closed-ended questions,which limited student *** delve into students’responses,this study used open-ended questions,a qualitative method(content analysis),a quantitative method(topic modelling),and a sentimental *** study also looked at students’emotional states during and after the COVID-19 *** terms of determining trends in students’input,the results showed that quantitative and qualitative methods produced similar *** had unfavourable sentiments about studying during COVID-19 and positive sentiments about the face-to-face ***,topic modelling has revealed that the majority of difficulties are more related to the environment(home)and social *** were less accepting of online *** a result,it is possible to conclude that face-to-face study still attracts students and provides benefits that online study cannot,such as social interaction and effective eye-to-eye communication.

Effectiveness of electrokinetic-enhanced oil recovery (EK-EOR): a systematic review

Hydrocarbons continue to play an important role in providing affordable energy to meet rising energy demand. Amidst growing concerns on the environmental impact of oil and gas production processes, many researchers are increasingly exploring environmentally sustainable methods of extracting hydrocarbons from the reservoir. The introduction of direct current into the pore space activates mechanisms that enhance fluid flow, reduces produced water, decreases associated hydrogen sulfide production, and leaves no material footprint on the environment. Previous laboratory studies and field applications have reported varying degrees of success of the EK-EOR mechanism. However, the mechanism and effectiveness of this technique remain unclear. This systematic literature review provides an opportunity to critically evaluate laboratory results, establish a basis for the effectiveness of the EK-EOR mechanism and identify possible future research directions. In this study, 52 articles were identified and reviewed in a selection process that adhered to the PRISMA protocol. Data extracted from these articles were fed into the EK-EOR model, and Monte Carlo simulation (10,000 iterations) was used to determine the success rate of the EK-EOR process. Insights obtained from the simulation indicate that EK-EOR alone is not effective (with a success rate of 45%). Insights from published laboratory experiments indicate that interstitial clay affects the electro-osmotic permeability of reservoir rocks which determines the effectiveness of the EK-EOR mechanism. Salt deposition on the cathode and generation of gases (oxygen and chlorine at the anode) are significant limitations of the EK-EOR. The review concludes by identifying future areas of application of EK-EOR. © 2022, The Author(s).

Prioritizing Indicators for Rapid Response in Global Health Security:A Bayesian Network Approach

This study explored a Bayesian belief networks(BBNs)approach,developing two distinct models for prioritizing the seven indicators related to the“rapid response to and mitigation of the spread of an epidemic”category within the context of both the specifc category and the Global Health Security Index(GHS index).Utilizing data from the 2021 GHS index,the methodology involves rigorous preprocessing,the application of the augmented naive Bayes algorithm for structural learning,and k-fold *** fndings show unique perspectives in both BBN *** the mutual value of information analysis,“linking public health and security authorities”emerged as the key predictor for the“rapid response to and mitigation of the spread of an epidemic”category,while“emergency preparedness and response planning”assumed precedence for the GHS *** analysis highlighted the critical role of“emergency preparedness and response planning”and“linking public health and security authorities”in extreme performance states,with“access to communications infrastructure”and“trade and travel restrictions”exhibiting varied *** BBN models exhibit high predictive accuracy,achieving 83.3%and 82.3%accuracy for extreme states in“rapid response to and mitigation of the spread of an epidemic”and the GHS index,*** study contributes to the literature on GHS by modeling the dependencies among various indicators of the rapid response dimension of the GHS index and highlighting their relative importance based on the mutual value of information and sensitivity analyses.

We propose a method for generating a ruled B-spline surface fitting to a sequence of pre-defined ruling lines and the generated surface is required to be ***,the terminal ruling lines are treated as hard *** from existing methods that compute a quasi-developable surface from two boundary curves and cannot achieve explicit ruling control,our method controls ruling lines in an intuitive way and serves as an effective tool for computing quasi-developable surfaces from freely-designed *** treat this problem from the point of view of numerical optimization and solve for surfaces meeting the distance error tolerance allowed in *** performance and the efficacy of the proposed method are demonstrated by the experiments on a variety of models including an application of the method for path planning in 5-axis computer numerical control(CNC)flank milling.

Observation points classifier ensemble for high-dimensional imbalanced classification

In this paper,an Observation Points Classifier Ensemble(OPCE)algorithm is proposed to deal with High-Dimensional Imbalanced Classification(HDIC)problems based on data processed using the Multi-Dimensional Scaling(MDS)feature extraction ***,dimensionality of the original imbalanced data is reduced using MDS so that distances between any two different samples are preserved as well as ***,a novel OPCE algorithm is applied to classify imbalanced samples by placing optimised observation points in a low-dimensional data ***,optimization of the observation point mappings is carried out to obtain a reliable assessment of the unknown *** experiments have been conducted to evaluate the feasibility,rationality,and effectiveness of the proposed OPCE algorithm using seven benchmark HDIC data *** results show that(1)the OPCE algorithm can be trained faster on low-dimensional imbalanced data than on high-dimensional data;(2)the OPCE algorithm can correctly identify samples as the number of optimised observation points is increased;and(3)statistical analysis reveals that OPCE yields better HDIC performances on the selected data sets in comparison with eight other HDIC *** demonstrates that OPCE is a viable algorithm to deal with HDIC problems.
