Embodied conversational agents (ECAs) are computer-generated, human-like characters that interact with human users in face-to-face conversations. ECA is a powerful tool for representing cultural differences and is suitable for interactive training or edutainment systems. This article presents preliminary results from the development of a culture-adaptive virtual tour guide agent for serving Japanese, Croatian, and general Western users by displaying appropriate verbal and non-verbal behaviors. It is being implemented in Generic ECA Framework, a modular framework for developing ECAs. Dividing the ECA functions into reusable and loosely coupled modules minimizes the effort required to implement additional behavior and facilitates incremental scale up of the system. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2009.

In recent years, computer-generated interactive virtual characters, called Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs), are subjects of considerable ongoing research. Nevertheless, their conversational abilities are mediocre compared to real human behaviors. Among limitations, most of ECAs are incapable of participating in natural conversations in which the number of participants can change dynamically. In the ongoing work we investigate principles of integrating a multi-user support in an ECA system. We present experiments and implementation approach of a prototype system in which a tour guide ECA interacts with one or two users. The system combines different technologies to detect and address the system users and draw their attention. Experimental interaction with the system produces encouraging results. The system can address the user's appearance, departure, decreased level of interest and identify his conversational role. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

Embodied Conversational Agents (EGAs) are life-like computer generated characters that interact with human users in face-to-face multi-modal conversations. ECA systems are generally complex and difficult for individual research groups to develop. Therefore, if there was a common framework for connecting ECA functioning blocks seamlessly to an integrated system, redundant effort can be saved. This paper discusses the issues emerged in developing such a framework and introduces the design and preliminary results of our ongoing project, Generic ECA Framework. The advancement of traffic makes world more and more internationalized and increases frequency of communication between people who come from different cultures. Differences in their conversation go beyond the languages they speak to the non-verbal behaviors they express while talking. To improve the abilities of the embodied conversational agents (ECAs) while interacting with human users we are working on the ECA based application, a tour guide of city Dubrovnik that servers visitors in Japanese, Croatian and general western cultures speaking in English. This paper presents the overall architecture and explains possible extension with another culture. It describes issues we met while making agent talk in Croatian and proposed solutions.

The Generation Challenge programme (GCP) is a global crop research consortium directed toward crop improvement through the application of comparative biology and genetic resources characterization to plant breeding. A key consortium research activity is the development of a GCP crop bioinformatics platform to support GCP research. This platform includes the following: (i) shared, public platform-independent domain models, ontology, and data formats to enable interoperability of data and analysis flows within the platform;(ii) web service and registry technologies to identify, share, and integrate information across diverse, globally dispersed data sources, as well as to access high-performance computational (HPC) facilities for computationally intensive, high-throughput analyses of project data;(iii) platform-specific middleware reference implementations of the domain model integrating a suite of public (largely open-access/-source) databases and software tools into a workbench to facilitate biodiversity analysis, comparative analysis of crop genomic data, and plant breeding decision making.

We have established a medical network in Asia-Pacific area with high-quality moving image on a super broad-banded internet line since February 2003. Broadcasting real-time surgery and teleconference with medical-quality videos with Digital Video Transport System (DVTS) were so useful to learn surgical techniques and other medical procedures beyond borders. We have conducted 20 events in categories of teleconference (8 times), live transmission of medical procedure (6 times), and remote attendance to scientific medical meetings (6 times) until September 2004. We had teleconferences among 3 countries in APAN-Hawaii in January 2004 (Japan, Korea and USA), and in APAN-Cairns in July 2004 (Japan, Korea and Australia). There have been no serious transmission/ ethical problems sofar. With these experiences and current achievements, we hope to extend this advanced network system to whole Asia-Pacific countries to share medical skills and knowledge. © 2005 IEEE.
