The search and rescue operation is an increasingly important Internet of Things (IoT) application in which the resource-constrained things play the rescue role. Recently, more and more countries/organizations participate in a rescue task. To make the task more effective, they should share their information with each other but different countries have assorted sharing policies. Our investigation shows that access control systems for current search and rescue operations are either coarse-grained or computationally heavy. It cannot satisfy the rescue operations since those things demand lightweight cryptographic operations and the participating countries require flexible policies to protect their classified data. We propose a fine-grained access control system which is not only secure but also efficient. The practical experiments are conducted and its results demonstrate the lightweight cost in simulation.

Power grids are being enhanced by integrating the information and Communication technology (ICT) to make them more reliable, economic, efficient, and environmentally friendly. The integration of power grids with ICT to build Smart Grids (SGs) has reduced costs and improved their performances. But, on the other hand, this has also brought the cyber security threats as well. In traditional ICT systems, the end devices are the powerful systems which have high computation power and memory capacity to perform the intense computations to avoid cyber security threats, whereas most of the end devices in SG lack these capabilities. Incorporating the security in the early stages of SG development through systems security requirements engineering can reduce the potential cyber security threats. This paper presents the results of applying Security Requirements Engineering Process (SREP) on the SG wireless network, and proposes the potential solutions that can be implemented such as using Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM)-enabled Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) with Global Positioning System (GPS) support. © 2013 IEEE.

We consider AC electrical systems where each electrical device has a power demand expressed as a complex number, and there is a limit on the magnitude of total power supply. Motivated by this scenario, we introduce the complex-demand knapsack problem (C-KP), a new variation of the traditional knapsack problem, where each item is associated with a demand as a complex number, rather than a real number often interpreted as weight or size of the item. While keeping the same goal as to maximize the sum of values of the selected items, we put the capacity limit on the magnitude of the sum of satisfied demands. For C-KP, we prove its inapproximability by FPTAS (unless P = NP), as well as presenting a (1/2 - e)-approximation algorithm. Furthermore, we investigate the selfish multi-agent setting where each agent is in charge of one item, and an agent may misreport the demand and value of his item for his own interest. We show a simple way to adapt our approximation algorithm to be monotone, which is sufficient for the existence of incentive compatible payments such that no agent has an incentive to misreport. Privacy preservation is a crucial issue for smart buildings where all kinds of messages, e.g., power usage data, control commands, events, alarms, etc. are transmitted to accomplish the management of power. Without appropriate privacy protection schemes, electricity customers are faced with various privacy risks. Meanwhile, the natures of smart grids and smart buildings—such as having limited computation power of smart devices and constraints in communication network capabilities, while requiring being highly reliable—make privacy preservation a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a group key scheme to safeguard multicast privacy with the provisions of availability, fault-tolerance, and efficiency in the context of smart buildings as a part the smart grid. In particular, hybrid architecture accommodating both centralized and contributory modes is constructed in order to achieve both fault-tolerance and efficiency with only one set of group key installed. Key trees are sophisticatedly managed to reduce the number of exponentiation operations. In addition, an individual rekeying scheme is introduced for occasional joining and leaving of member smart meters. Experimental results, on a simulation platform, show that our scheme is able to provide significant performance gains over state-of-the-art methods while effectively preserving the participants’ privacy.

The focus of most low wind turbine designers is how to maximize power extraction. Designing horizontal axis turbine for relatively low average wind speed requires power extraction at high tip speed ratio obtained at high angle of attack. These high angles occur at low Reynolds numbers which makes it even more difficult to generate sufficient lift to turn the blades. Therefore, the shape of the rotor blade is very important in determining the overall aerodynamic performance of the turbine. In this work, the blade element momentum theory is developed to automate the complete procedure. Three airfoils are taken for the comparative calculation of elemental power and thrust coefficient and other parameters such as circulation, torque and thrust distribution. The result is compared to experimental result for code validation. The goal is to contribute in predicting the performance of wind turbine blades and narrow down choices of airfoil in low speed regions.

Gasification is making a strong comeback as a sustainable energy source in clean energy systems such as IGCC, as a renewable source utilizing millions of tons of waste dumped in the landfill, and as a solution to the ground water leaching and CO 2 & CH 4 emission that risking our ecological system. In this paper, thermodynamic equilibrium and numerical analyses of the gasification of coal and tire crumbs in an entrained flow gasifier is presented. This work seeks to obtain a comparative analysis between the optimum operation conditions for the two feedstocks. The numerical model uses an Eulerian-Lagrangian approach with discrete phase model of feedstock in a continuous model of oxidant. This model also takes into account the turbulent flow (SST k-ω model), gas phase gasification (Species Transport model), tire particles devolatilization (Kobayashi Two-Competing Rate model), heterogeneous char reaction (Multiple Surface reaction model), particle dispersion by turbulent flow (Stochastic Discrete Random Walk model), radiation (P1 model) and particle distribution (Rosin Rammler model). The temperature distribution and product distribution of the developed model is also presented in this paper.

Given two bounded convex sets X âŠ† â m and Y âŠ† â n, specified by membership oracles, and a continuous convex-concave function F:X×Y → â, we consider the problem of computing an Ε-approximate saddle point, that is, a pair (x,y) âˆˆ X×Y such that Grigoriadis and Khachiyan (1995), based on a randomized variant of fictitious play, gave a simple algorithm for computing an Ε-approximate saddle point for matrix games, that is, when F is bilinear and the sets X and Y are simplices. In this paper, we extend their method to the general case. In particular, we show that, for functions of constant width, an Ε-approximate saddle point can be computed using O(n + m) random samples from log-concave distributions over the convex sets X and Y. As a consequence, we obtain a simple randomized polynomial-time algorithm that computes such an approximation faster than known methods for problems with bounded width and when Ε âˆˆ (0,1) is a fixed, but arbitrarily small constant. Our main tool for achieving this result is the combination of the randomized fictitious play with the recently developed results on sampling from convex sets. Software engineering processes are often challenged by overlooked tasks and misguided decisions that are simple but yet essential for the success of the system to be developed. A list of guidelines and steps is required to help facilitate software development processes by efficiently guiding engineers and managers at different stages of software development. Moreover, the ensuring of the execution of required tasks is essential to reduce the likelihood of the system failure. In other critical areas such as medical surgery or aerospace control, the use of checklists has proven as a successful practice to ensure the effective and efficient execution of the tasks in a process. Although several of the current practices in software development include using some art of checklists to monitor the software development processes, there are no unified and integrated checklists from research and industry resulting in significant disparities. Such ambiguity could be even counter-productive instead of easing the software development processes. In order to fill this gap, we developed comprehensive and integrated software engineering checklists for the critical areas of requirements engineering and software project management. To create such comprehensive checklists and ensure their completeness, we applied the systematic literature review method. We analyzed 323 documents from academia and industry, and identified a total of 183 requirements engineering checklist items and 263 project management checklist items.

Current environmental issues emerging in the world are reflected in the environmental legislation of several countries. Because environmental issues are important, industries actively seek ways in which to reduce their environmental footprint. One effective method is through the use of reverse logistics. Reverse logistics is the concept of reusing used products in order to reduce wastes and to increase an industry's environmental performance and resulting profits. Stock selection, transportation, centralized collection, data collection, refurbishing, and remanufacturing are some of the more commonly utilized reverse logistic operations. An effective reverse logistics network is essential for increasing the flow of goods from customers to producers. The objective of this paper is to develop a multi-echelon reverse logistics network for product returns to minimize the total reverse logistics cost, which consists of renting, inventory carrying, material handling, setup, and shipping costs. Industries need to give more attention to the task of collecting used products from customers and establishing collection facilities. In this study, a mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model is developed to find out the number and location of initial collection points and centralized return centers required for an effective return and collection system, and also the maximum holding time (collection frequency) for aggregation of small volumes of returned products into large shipments. Two solution approaches, namely genetic algorithm and artificial immune system, are implemented and compared. The usefulness of the proposed model and algorithm are demonstrated via an illustrative example. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
