Malware is currently a major threat to information and computer security, with the volume and growing diversity of its variants causing major problems to traditional security defenses. Software patches and upgrades to anti-viral packages are typically released only after the malware's key characteristics have been identified through infection, by which time it may be too late to protect systems. Sequence analysis is widely used in bioinformatics for revealing the genetic diversity of organisms and annotating gene functions. This paper adopts a new approach to the problem of malware recognition, which is to use multiple sequence alignment techniques from bioinformatics to align variable length computer viral and worm code so that core, invariant regions of the code occupy fixed positions in the alignment patterns. Data mining (ANNs, symbolic rule extraction) can then be used to learn the critical features that help to determine into which class the aligned patterns fall. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of our novel approach for identifying malware code through multiple sequence alignment followed by analysis by ANNs and symbolic rule extraction methods. © 2012 IEEE.

Multi-touch interfaces facilitate collaborative learning and, thus, represent a promising educational technology. Their ability to synchronously accommodate multiple users is an advantage in co-located collaborative design tasks. This paper explores the multi-touch interface's potential in collaborative Unified Modelling Language (UML) diagramming by comparing it to a PC-based tool. The results of the study demonstrate that the use of the multi-touch table enables an increase in the equity of participation, enhanced collaboration amongst team members, and the facilitation of parallel- participative design. © 2012 ACM.

The service-oriented architecture (SOA) allows distributed resources to be provided through standard service interfaces, resulting in easy and flexible access to domain-specific functionality. Depending on resource availability and the demand for services, a service-providing host may choose to provide one or several services in the direction of maximizing its service-providing utility. This is known as the service provision control (SPC) problem. With the help of stochastic differential equations (SDEs), this problem will be tackled in this paper within a stochastic optimization framework. Differential evolution (DE) algorithm will be further utilized to identify near-optimal service-providing policies. Experimental study has been conducted based on an example inspired by Cyber security. The experiment results show that our approach is effective in tackling the SPC problem and may be therefore suitable for many practical applications. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper proposes a learner independent multi-task learning (MTL) scheme such that ML = L(Ti, KT(Ti, Tj)), for i, j = 1, 2, i ≠ j, where KT is independent to the learner , and MTL is conducted for arbitrary learner combinations. In the proposed solution, we use Minimum Enclosing Balls (MEBs) as knowledge carriers to extract and transfer knowledge from one task to another. Since the knowledge presented in MEB can be decomposed as raw data, it can be incorporated into any learner as additional training data for a new learning task and thus improve its learning rate. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed KT is evaluated on multi-task pattern recognition (MTPR) problems derived from UCI datasets, using classifiers from different disciplines for MTL. The experimental results show that multi-task learners using KT via MEB carriers perform better than learners without-KT, and it is successfully applied to all type of classifiers. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Sequence alignment is widely used in bioinformatics for revealing the genetic diversity of organisms and annotating gene functions by finding regions of similarity across biosequences. Such alignment requires sequences to be represented in the DNA or protein alphabet for tools such as Clustal to work. Previous work has demonstrated the feasibility of applying biosequence multiple alignment techniques to computer viral and worm signatures to find regions of similarity that can serve as malware `motifs', or meta-signatures. However, it was not known how different ways of representing signatures in an appropriate biosequence alphabet would affect the alignment results. This paper investigates the effects of adopting three different ways of representing malware signatures on sequence alignment and motif identification. The results of the alignment were checked with perceptrons, decision tree and logistic regression. The best performing representation was used to derive rules in PRISM that give rise to `motifs' that can perform the role of `metasignatures'. All analysis was undertaken on the publicly available data mining tool, Weka (Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis: http://***/ml/weka/).

The use of multi-touch interfaces for collaborative software design has received significant attention. Multi-touch surfaces can accommodate more than one user synchronously which is particularly useful for collaborative design tasks with open-ended nature. In this paper, we explore the potential of using multi-touch technology for Unified Modeling Language (UML) software design by comparing it with PC-based collaborative software design. Results show that the use of multi-touch table enhanced collaboration amongst the team members and increased shared contribution.

In this paper, discrete event simulation by batch-means of a M/M/∞ queuing system is utilised to simulate a cellular CDMA system. The details of the simulation model, warm-up period, and simulation run time are discussed. The warm-up period is studied because it affects the accuracy of the results in simulation of communication systems. During the warm-up period-when the simulation system has not reached the steady-state situation-, the system results (eg blocking probability) vary very rapidly from zero to 0.037 for the parameters used. In the batch-means method with 10,000 calls per batch and for 50 batches (500,000 calls), the CDMA blocking probability is 0.0192 with 99% confidence interval. © 2011 IEEE.

Tag clouds are relatively new, visual representations of tags - and are becoming increasingly popular on the web today. They have shown great potential for use as visualisation or interaction techniques;however, at the same time they have also been shown to be somewhat limited in regards to capabilities and usefulness. In contrast to many popular views on the usefulness of tag clouds, it has been suggested that their primary advantage may be for use as signallers of the social activity occurring within a system - as opposed to purely visualisations of data. Little work has been done on the generation of personalised tag clouds and their effect on increasing users' enjoyment and engagement with a system. We propose PETAC (PErsonal TAg Cloud), a system that allows differently configured tag clouds to be compared side-by-side. It was developed to examine the feasibility of increasing the social awareness information provided by tag clouds. Results show that there is potential for improving the usefulness of tag clouds by including additional social awareness information in these clouds. © 2011 ACM.
