In this paper, discrete event simulation by batch-means of a M/M/∞ queuing system is utilised to simulate a cellular CDMA system. The details of the simulation model, warm-up period, and simulation run time are discussed. The warm-up period is studied because it affects the accuracy of the results in simulation of communication systems. During the warm-up period-when the simulation system has not reached the steady-state situation-, the system results (eg blocking probability) vary very rapidly from zero to 0.037 for the parameters used. In the batch-means method with 10,000 calls per batch and for 50 batches (500,000 calls), the CDMA blocking probability is 0.0192 with 99% confidence interval.

Pilot protection schemes use communication channels to send information from the local relay terminal to the remote relay terminal, thereby allowing high-speed tripping for faults occurring within 100% of the protected line. This document is intended as a tool for protection engineers to assist in determining when pilot protection should be installed for transmission line protection, in addition to a communications independent system. The emphasis is not on which pilot scheme to use, but rather if pilot protection is necessary. (Note: The document does not purport to provide a comprehensive list of all considerations that may be used in making this determination or in determining redundancy requirements.) It is evident that it would be less expensive to only install non-pilot step-distance protection since no communication equipment would be necessary (estimates as high as $150K per terminal for the addition of pilot protection). It is prudent to provide engineering considerations that would aid in justifying the installation and future maintenance costs. This report explores this issue by providing the following: (i) Considerations to determine the need for, and benefits of, pilot protection such as high-speed reclosing, improved system stability and power quality, easier coordination, better resistive coverage, and regulatory issues. (ii) Alternatives to pilot protection and fall back strategies when the channel is lost or degraded, or when temporary configurations are entered. Options include stepped distance, ground inverse time overcurrent, Zone 1 extension, and taking the line out of service. (iii) Considerations to determine pilot system redundancy for a given application depending on the voltage level, regulatory issues and economics, role of voting schemes and redundant channels, dependability vs. security, etc.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) is commonly used in business situations to provide secure communication channels over public infrastructure such as Internet. This is because these networks can be set-up with a lower cost of ownership compared to other means of securing communications. VPN is a proven technology that does provide security strong enough for business use. However, performance of these networks is also important in that lowering network and server resources can lower costs and improve user satisfaction. In this research we evaluate performance of three operating systems (Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Linux Fedora Core 6) on a test-bed set-up and observe their network performance with different VPN tunnels protocols and algorithms. It is found that the three operating systems give different performance metrics values for various combinations of the variables. Linux consumes the greatest network resources; however its VPN throughput values band together much closely than Windows environment.

A small network of computing devices that started as ARPANET project in early 1980s is now a worldwide network of devices for billions of users. This global network, the Internet, has become an integral part of worldwide economy and life of individuals. Internet Protocol (IP) v4 is the basic building block of the Internet and has served well, but it has limitations that hinder its growth. The solution is IPv6, which addresses inherent problems of the earlier version. However, due to the increased overhead in IPv6 and its interaction with the operating system that hosts this communication protocol, there may be network performance issues. In this paper, two operating systems namely, Windows Vista and Linux Ubuntu are configured with the two versions of IP and empirically evaluated for performance difference. Performance related metrics like throughput, delay, jitter and CPU usage are empirically measured on a test-bed implementation. The results show that network performance depends not only on IP version and traffic type, but also on the choice of the operating system.

This panel will present concrete results from initial analyses of the growing body of interviews in the computing Educators Oral History Project (CEOHP). We will present a brief background of the project, with the bulk of the panel focusing on issues related to the techniques and results that have been explored during these early stages of the project. Many histories have been written about various aspects of computing, including computers from the middle ages to modern times, application areas (e.g.,[4]), the software industry (e.g., [3]), (male) computer scientists (e.g.,[6]), and female computer scientists (e.g., [5]). Many of these histories have been written from the viewpoints of the actors themselves, with the underlying data collected in the form of oral histories. Yet, despite the significant role that computing and technology have played in societal developments over recent decades, very little has been written about the people who have taught the ideas of computing to the computing workforce. By understanding the histories of individuals who have educated the workforce over the past few decades, we can gain insights into these years of rapid change and support educators as they plan for the future. From its start in 2005, a key impetus for CEOHP was the realization that many leading computing educators were nearing the ends of their careers. While the initial focus of CEOHP was women who helped pioneer computing education at a time when there was a greater proportion of women in the field, the focus soon expanded to include the stories of men. CEOHP's leadership realized that the collection would best achieve its potential by providing a strong basis for comparison and contrast - that is, through balance in the interviews across a wide variety of characteristics, including gender. In addition to the goal of preserving the history of pioneers, a goal for the CEOHP collection has been to create a body of narratives that can help attract students, particular

Internet is a ubiquitous part of businesses and individuals worldwide. With its popularity on an incline, operating system vendors are developing end-systems that support the new version of Internet Protocol (IPv6) that eventually will replace IPv4. The new version resolves issues that IPv4 has and takes the Internet into the 21st century. Performance of the IP stack and how it associates with operating systems is critical to the efficiency of all network related activities on any computing infrastructure. Hence it isessential to evaluate performance of IP stack with different operating systems. In this paper, two Microsoft operating systems namely, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are configured with the two versions of IP and empirically evaluated for performance difference. The experimental results demonstrate that theoretical and practical performance values are different. It also shows that network performance depends not only on IP version and traffic type, but also on the choice of the operating system. ©2008 IEEE.

information and Communication technology (ICT) has been hailed and promoted as the key to open the door to business success. While ICT recognises no geographical boundaries and is evolving at a phenomenal pace, critical issues such as aligning ICT strategies to corporate goals, clearly defining the roles of ICT in the business, contribution of ICT to the achievement of the business objectives and assessing the impact and effectiveness of ICT on business ventures of people from more conservative and traditional societies, have largely remain unchallenged for years. In an attempt to encourage Pasifika peoples to adapt and use ICT to enhance and ensure success of their businesses this paper examines the extent of ICT adoption by Pasifika businesses in Wellington, New Zealand, in order to assess their ability to capitalise on the opportunities offered by a technology that is alien to their culture and revolutionise the ways in which they do business in their societies. The study, presented in this paper, was carried out using a mixed-method approach which comprised quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. A thorough analysis of the data that were gathered with the quantitative data collection technique is presented, in more detail in this paper, and the result is used to develop pathways for Pasifika peoples in New Zealand to capitalised on the platform that has been set out by the digital technology. © 2008 IEEE.

People offer goods and services in exchange for other goods and services or items of value. Value, or price, is often expressed in a currency. Business and commerce is centrally concerned with carrying out activities where goods and services are made available to people who wish to buy them. E-commerce (web based) and m-commerce (mobile device-based) are directed at minimising the impact of distance and fixed location. on purchasing information and decisions. Establishing the value of goods and services has been achieved in a number of ways of which this paper outlines the haggling process, a traditional means of price fixing. Three sets of constructs are discussed in the paper in order to address the question of how information. Communication Technologies (ICT) may begin to facilitate the price fixing process in variable price contexts. A current research agenda is briefly described and future research is suggested.
