In this paper we report on a multi-institutional investigation into the reading and comprehension skills of novice programmers. This work extends previous studies (Lister 2004, McCracken 2001) by developing a question set within two key pedagogical frameworks: the Bloom and SOLO taxonomies. From this framework of analysis some interesting emergent patterns relating the cognitive level of the questions to student performance have been identified. © 2006, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

This paper addresses challenges faced by postgraduate students in information technology in gathering primary data for their research. Students in this postgraduate program study in the areas of networking, instructional design, educational technology, multimedia and management information systems. Challenges that have emerged for postgraduate students as they gather primary data are also presented. Methods of turning these challenges into learning tools to enhance both postgraduate education and postgraduate supervision are also discussed. Finally the ways in which these challenges add to the general pool of supervisory practices is addressed. © 2005 Kay Fielden.

This document details an initial study into cognitive abilities that may be enhanced from playing computer games. Using a neuro-psychological assessment software package titled SynWin, participants were tested for their ability to function in a synthetic work environment. Scores were recorded and after playing computer games for specified lengths of time, the participants were tested again. The computer game employed was Counter Strike. This game is categorised as a firstperson shooter (FPS), and is a multiplayer networked game. Differences between this game and other first-person shooters such as Quake III include the realism that Counter Strike achieves and the immersive qualities that surround that player. Different experiments were completed;group one, the control group, where the participants were tested three times without playing computer games between tests and group two where they were only tested twice, but played Counter Strike for two hours before the second test. This group showed a statistically significant improvement in their multitasking abilities. In summary, this study indicates that certain types of computer games can improve cognitive functions, and suggests further research to ascertain if these abilities are retained and what other skills can be enhanced by games similar to Counter Strike. © 2005 Authors & Digital Games Research Association DiGRA.

Many researchers believe that special games are needed for people with special needs. However, this study highlights some of the issues surrounding computer games and disabled children by conducting interviews to ask them what games they would like to play. Interestingly, they wanted to play the same games that everyone else did. What they do need is a way of interacting with these games, especially those on Xbox and Playstation consoles, which require two very dexterous hands to control. This paper is the start of an ongoing project to investigate input devices for disabled people, to allow them to interact with other players through playing commercial multiplayer games. The study also considers the issues of using computer games to test the abilities of disabled people in an attempt to integrate them into mainstream society. © 2005 Paul R Kearney & Digital Games Research Association DiGRA.

In this paper, we report on a study that was carried out to investigate students' opinions on learning and accepting coding standards in programming courses. We used a questionnaire survey to gather data. We also used the information observed from our teaching practices. An analysis of the data indicated that most students' believe coding standards are important in programming courses but tend not to comply with them, thus implying possible flaws in the teaching strategies used. We also present current strategies we use for teaching coding standards, and evaluate them for effectiveness. In doing so, we propose strategies that are likely to be effective in teaching coding standards as they would be used in industry, and present suggestions for further studies that can be carried out to implement these strategies. © 2005 ACM.

Group work and group work assessment in higher education has been discussed, researched and written about widely. One of the driving forces behind the design and assessment of group work has been the need to expose, familiarise and equip students with the skills that they must possess to combat real world situations. Despite the call from employers for graduates who are able to communicate effectively with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and who must be prepared to work within or direct a team, assessing individual contribution to group activities appears to be the most inhibiting factor that repressed some academics from implementing the idea. Moreover, some critics who conduct group work and carry out group assessment are simply doing that because they are required to do so. This paper supports the established conviction that the ability to work as part of a team is one of the prerequisites for securing employment in the computing industry. The authors, both industry and teaching practitioners, use systems analysis and design as a case study to support their claim that computer professionals must be trained to be able to speak the languages of businessmen, politicians, technicians, computer users, managers, and so on. The study reported in this paper found that while students preferred to put themselves into groups (self select), teachers should be involved and give students guidance about the capability of each individual student and the various skills that are needed to complete group activities. The study also found that when it came to assessing group work, teachers were not considered by students as the experts in assessing group work because they did not know much about the contribution made by individual members of the group. The paper therefore recommends that self evaluation, peer assessment and individual assessment techniques should be used when assessing group work. Over the years, it is argued that due to cultural differences between traditional and more innovative societies, technologies which have been invented, developed and served their intended purposes without disrupting the culture of the society to which they were meant to be used, should be modified to suit the culture of other societies. The author strongly believes that in order for the people in less developed societies to be more creative and to act independently, people in more developed societies should avoid imposing their ideas and technologies upon the indigenous systems of social organisation. This paper explores the possibility and ways through which to attract and encourage people from developing countries to consider the information and communication technology industry as a potential field of study for their children and prepare themselves to secure jobs in the information industry, as the world is gradually but surely transforming itself from industrial society to an information and knowledge society. The paper presented the result of a study about how the people of Tonga view computers and computerised information systems. An overview of the importance of socio-cultural values is presented, followed by a discussion of the impact of cultural interaction and cultural change on traditional societies. The concept of appropriate and suitable technologies is briefly described. Finally, a study of the perception of Tongans, in the Waikato area in New Zealand is presented, followed by a strategy that may be used to improve people's understanding of computers as tools for processing, sharing and preserving information. © 2005.
