This paper reviews security testing, covering the concepts and notions essential to the discipline. The following analysis uses an inverted funnel approach to reduce the broad topic of software testing into its constituent parts. With this framework in mind, the paper will attempt to answer the following questions. Why is software testing significant? What are the roles of users and developers as they relate to software? What techniques are commonly used when testing software? Is the discipline of software testing unified; if not, what controversies exist, and what do they concern? What is security testing? What is the purpose of security testing? What metrics are used to guide security testing? What are common threats that hamper or impede security testing? How can developers mitigate the risk posed by security threats; what defensive options are available? What improvements can be made to software testing? What can occur in the absence of software/security testing?

Kubernetes is a hot topic in the field of software engineering and Distributed computing. When compared to previous methods, the principle underlying Kubernetes, which is containerization, has altered how applications are created and delivered. However, when considering the state, particularly the databases, with Kubernetes, there is a scalability and data synchronization barrier. The most frequently used approach is to host the database outside of Kubernetes and maintain connectivity with the cluster. Kubernetes inherent capabilities are sufficient for hosting databases. But that requires high domain knowledge to do the configurations and maintain the databases on Kubernetes. The purpose of this research is to fulfil that gap by introducing a solution for managing highly available databases on Kubernetes. The solution is limited to managing PostgreSQL databases on Kubernetes using auto-scaling. A novel algorithm is proposed for auto-scaling, as previous algorithms do not take database requests into account when determining the scaling need. The drawbacks of data synchronization and auto-scaling will be solved in this research, and the end user will be able to access the service without interruption for the majority of the time, as the final solution makes the database cluster highly available for the service layer. © 2021 IEEE.

The rise in smart healthcare systems have enhanced connectivity of implantable medical devices (IMD). Healthcare providers are able to wirelessly control and monitor these devices enabling quicker diagnosis and treatment. However, the devices' underlying wireless communication medium also pose security risks for patients, as unauthorized access could result in exposing private information and compromising the devices critical functionality. In this work, we develop a biometric based authentication using deep learning for entities seeking access to IMDs. Specifically, we utilize the patients Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal to authenticate programmers attempting to communicate with the IMD. We implement varying neural network models and evaluate them based on their authentication accuracy. Simulation results show that CNN model with 10 hidden layers performed best with 99.7% accuracy.

The widespread integration of Distributed Generation (DG) and new loads such as Electric Vehicles (EVs) into power distribution networks presents substantial technical challenges for network operators, such as voltage fluctuations and phase unbalance. These can be addressed by many power electronic devices with advanced control strategies, including the Hybrid Transformer (HT). This paper presents a new three-phase HT concept which can perform multiple functions, including voltage regulation and voltage balancing, to address power quality problems in distribution networks. Theory and control strategy are presented, along with simulated results incorporating an unbalance-tolerant control scheme and 3D Space Vector Modulation, to demonstrate the validity of the proposed HT topology. Its advantages include being retrofittable to existing distribution transformers, not requiring bulky low-frequency converter magnetics, having a low semiconductor component count, and allowing reduced DC-link capacitances. This makes it cost-effective, compact and light weight in comparison to the existing topologies that provide similar functionality.

Hyperspectral image and Multispectral image (HSI-MSI) fusion aims to fuse a registered high-resolution multi-spectral image (HR-MSI) with a low-resolution hyperspectral image (LR-HSI) to generate a spatially enhanced HSI with high spectral resolution. Current fusion methods often make insufficient utilization of spatial and spectral prior information, including spatial self-similarity and inter-spectral correlations, resulting in a degradation in image fidelity. Therefore, we propose a novel HSI-MSI fusion network, called DA-LGNet, designed to learn spatial-spectral priors with a dual-attention mechanism for feature enhancement and utilize the advantages of the large kernel attention for global and local feature representation. Specifically, the large kernel attention module (LKAM) can efficiently extract and integrate long-range dependencies and detailed textual information. The dual-attention enhancement module (DAEM) incorporates the position attention mechanism with the channel attention mechanism, flexibly capturing spatial and spectral prior information, which are crucial for restoring high-resolution HSI (HR-HSI). Extensive experiments on two datasets demonstrate that our DA-LGNet importantly outper-forms other state-of-the-art methods.

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have demonstrated remarkable performance in classification and regression tasks on RGB-based pathological inputs. The network’s prediction mechanism must be interpretable to establish trust in the clinical routine. One principal approach to interpretation is feature attribution. Feature attribution methods identify the importance of input features for the output prediction. Building on the Information Bottleneck Attribution (IBA) method, we recognize the RGB’s input regions with high mutual information with the network’s output for each prediction. IBA identifies input regions that have sufficient predictive information. In this paper, we introduce "IBATree", a novel approach that combines IBA with decision trees to enhance both the interpretability and accuracy of DNNs in cancer cell classification. Our method leverages the information bottleneck framework to inject noise into feature maps and then isolates the most informative features for model predictions while maintaining high classification performance. We evaluated our proposed approach on three datasets—CNMC, ISBI2016, and BreaKHis—demonstrating competitive accuracy and producing clear interpretations. This makes IBATree particularly suitable for clinical applications, where understanding the rationale behind predictions is crucial. Our results show that IBATree provides reliable predictions and valuable insights into feature importance, paving the way for its application in various biomedical domains.

With the increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in a variety of applications, their safety has become a critical concern. UAVs face numerous emergencies during missions, in these situations, the UAVs need to autonomously find a suitable landing site, plan flight routes, and avoid obstacles in unstructured environments. However, due to the limitations of computing power and sensors, it is challenging to achieve this goal. This research aims to explore the monocular emergency autonomous landing algorithm. Specifically, this work focuses on extracting depth and vision information. A topology information extractor is designed to convert image to graph and assess the connectivity of terrain. Additionally, a depth information extractor is designed to calculate the slope and roughness of the ground. A 3D topology optimizer is designed to optimize the graph by depth information and evaluate the landing suitability by a heuristic strategy. To make the action decision, a hybrid decision network (DGN) based on 3D topology information is proposed. Finally, this work build a simulated scenario based on real scene to verify the efficiency of DGN. The results of the experiment show that DGN outperforms its counterparts in terms of action prediction accuracy and landing success rate.

Fed-CVLC: Compressing Federated Learning Communications with Variable-Length Codes

In Federated Learning (FL) paradigm, a parameter server (PS) concurrently communicates with distributed participating clients for model collection, update aggregation, and model distribution over multiple rounds, without touching private data owned by individual clients. FL is appealing in preserving data privacy;yet the communication between the PS and scattered clients can be a severe bottleneck. Model compression algorithms, such as quantization and sparsification, have been suggested but they generally assume a fixed code length, which does not reflect the heterogeneity and variability of model updates. In this paper, through both analysis and experiments, we show strong evidences that variable-length is beneficial for compression in FL. We accordingly present Fed-CVLC (Federated Learning Compression with Variable-Length Codes), which fine-tunes the code length in response of the dynamics of model updates. We develop optimal tuning strategy that minimizes the loss function (equivalent to maximizing the model utility) subject to the budget for communication. We further demonstrate that Fed-CVLC is indeed a general compression design that bridges quantization and sparsification, with greater flexibility. Extensive experiments have been conducted with public datasets to demonstrate that Fed-CVLC remarkably outperforms state-of-the-art baselines, improving model utility by 1.50%-5.44%, or shrinking communication traffic by 16.67%-41.61%. DeepGATGO: A Hierarchical Pretraining-Based Graph-Attention Model for Automatic Protein Function Prediction

Automatic protein function prediction (AFP) is classified as a large-scale multi-label classification problem aimed at automating protein enrichment analysis to eliminate the current reliance on labor-intensive wet-lab methods. Currently, popular methods primarily combine protein-related information and Gene Ontology (GO) terms to generate final functional predictions. For example, protein sequences, structural information, and protein-protein interaction networks are integrated as prior knowledge to fuse with GO term embeddings and generate the ultimate prediction results. However, these methods are limited by the difficulty in obtaining structural information or network topology information, as well as the accuracy of such data. Therefore, more and more methods that only use protein sequences for protein function prediction have been proposed, which is a more reliable and computationally cheaper approach. However, the existing methods fail to fully extract feature information from protein sequences or label data because they do not adequately consider the intrinsic characteristics of the data itself. Therefore, we propose a sequence-based hierarchical prediction method, DeepGATGO, which processes protein sequences and GO term labels hierarchically, and utilizes graph attention networks (GATs) and contrastive learning for protein function prediction. Specifically, we compute embeddings of the sequence and label data using pre-trained models to reduce computational costs and improve the embedding accuracy. Then, we use GATs to dynamically extract the structural information of non-Euclidean data, and learn general features of the label dataset with contrastive learning by constructing positive and negative example samples. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed model is no longer limited to specific biological populations and exhibits better scalability in GO term enrichment analysis on large-scale datasets.
