Global softwareengineering (GSE) teams face challenges due to the need to replace traditional physical presence interactions and co-ordination with computer-mediated means. A vast majority of the available tool support for distributed collaboration is deep-seated in a desktop metaphor introduced in the `70s, and huge efforts are being devoted to overcome its known limitations. Over the last few years we have looked into the feasibility of providing an approach based on Activity-Based computing (ABC) to address these issues in a novel way. We have developed a middleware and support tool, ABC4GSD, to enable collaborative distributed features in an application, while maintaining common interactions with the workstation that users are accustomed to. In this paper we present the results of a user evaluation we conducted on ABC4GSD using exemplar GSE scenarios. Participants' responses show positive and encouraging reception of the activity-based approach to supporting GSE.

software change impact analysis (CIA) is a key technique to identify the potential effects caused by software changes. In this paper, a new graph mining based CIA technique is proposed, which takes the interference among multiple proposed changes into account to improve the precision of the impact results. Empirical evaluations on two real-world software projects demonstrate the effectiveness of our CIA technique. Copyright 2013 ACM.

This paper uses a case study approach to evaluate the impact of a collaborative initiative within the North East of England which sets out to grow and sustain a software industry, based on the strengths of regional players. The project Sunderland software City has the ambitious aim of developing the people, the infrastructure and the business and enterprise culture to create and sustain a software industry. This paper focuses upon the impact of the project, and presents some lessons learned to date.

Multimedia streaming applications with stringent QoS requirements in 60GHz mmWave wireless personal area networks (WPANs) demand high rate and low latency data transfer as well as low service disruption. In this paper, we consider the problem of robust relay placement in 60GHz WPANs. Relays forward traffic from transmitter devices to receiver devices facilitating i) the primary communication path for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) transceiver pairs, and ii) secondary (backup) communication path for line-of-sight (LOS) transceiver pairs. We formulate the robust minimum relay placement problem and the robust maximum utility relay placement problem with the objective to minimize the number of relays deployed and maximize the network utility, respectively. Efficient algorithms are developed to solve both problems and have been shown to incur less service disruption in presence of moving subjects that may block the LOS paths in the environment.

Running regularly is a good way to keep fit. However, people's laziness usually stop them from keep up. Motivated by the competition and achievement system in many video games, we propose Runking, a mobile social network based persuasion system for running exercise. Runking can rank users' exercise records among friends and push those who are lazier than others. Meanwhile, if users keep on active, different achievements can be unlocked, which can further incent users to exercise regularly. The system is build upon smartphones. By utilizing sensory data from smartphones, it can track and measure people's daily running record without human interaction. Evaluations show that the system has a high recognition rate for identifying users' activity and can reduce the network communication by using disconnected operations. Therefore, it can help users improve their fitness effectively.
