An all polymer EO modulator with a simple fabrication process using commercially available cladding materials has been designed, fabricated, and characterized. The result is a low V π modulator that is capable of being scaled up to larger scale production. Continued work on this project is being made towards designing an amplitude modulator structure and developing traveling wave transmission line electrodes that will utilize the low dispersion and THz response times of the π-conjugated OEOM system for high frequency operation.

Easy and mostly free access to the Internet has resulted in the growing use of open source software (OSS). However, it is a common perception that closed proprietary software is still superior in areas such as software maintenance and management. The research model of this study establishes a relationship between maintenance issues (such as user requests and error handling) and support provided by open source software through project forums, mailing lists and trackers. To conduct this research, we have used a dataset consisting of 120 open source software projects, covering a wide range of categories. The results of the study show that project forums and mailing lists play a significant role in addressing user requests in open source software. However according to the empirical investigation, it has been explored that trackers are used as an effective medium for error reporting as well as user requests.

In all these cases, metrics may depend on the context, such as the programming language. Here we aim to investigate if the distributions of commonly used metrics do, in fact, vary with six context factors: application domain, programming language, age, lifespan, the number of changes, and the number of downloads. For this preliminary study we select 320 nontrivial software systems from Source Forge. These software systems are randomly sampled from nine popular application domains of Source Forge. We calculate 39 metrics commonly used to assess software maintainability for each software system and use Kruskal Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test to determine if there are significant differences among the distributions with respect to each of the six context factors. We use Cliff's delta to measure the magnitude of the differences and find that all six context factors affect the distribution of 20 metrics and the programming language factor affects 35 metrics. We also briefly discuss how each context factor may affect the distribution of metric values. We expect our results to help software benchmarking and other softwareengineering methods that rely on these commonly used metrics to be tailored to a particular context.

Wireless systems have a wide range of applications recently. To explore complex features of such systems, formalisms are proposed to specify and reason about them. This paper presents a case study of routing protocol in wireless networks. We formalize the route discovery process of AODV routing protocol using Object-Z. Network topology and local variables of nodes are defined by relations and functions. The broadcast communication is modelled by operations which change local variables of the sender and all of its connected receivers simultaneously. We show the proof of loop freedom property for established routes based on the specification. Further, the specification is modified by adding mobility of nodes and loop freedom under a dynamic network topology is discussed, showing the scalability of our approach.

Combinatorial testing (CT) aims at detecting interaction failures between parameters in a system. Identifying the failure-inducing combinations of a failing test configuration can help developers find the cause of this failure. However, most studies in CT focus on detecting the failures rather than identifying failure-inducing combinations. In this paper, we propose the notion of a tuple relationship tree (TRT) to describe the relationships among all the candidate parameter interactions. TRT reduces additional test configurations that need to be generated in the fault localization process, and it also provides a clear view of all possible candidate interactions. As a result, our approach will not omit any possible interaction that could be the cause of a failure. In particular, we can identify multiple failure-inducing combinations that overlap with each other. Moreover, we extend our approach to handle the case where additional failure-inducing combinations may be introduced by newly generated test configurations.

Regenerating codes provide an efficient way to recover data at failed nodes in distributed storage systems. It has been shown that regenerating codes can be designed to minimize the per-node storage (called MSR) or minimize the communication overhead for regeneration (called MBR). In this work, we propose a new encoding scheme for [n, d] error-correcting MSR codes that generalizes our earlier work on error-correcting regenerating codes. We show that by choosing a suitable diagonal matrix, any generator matrix of the [n, α] Reed-Solomon (RS) code can be integrated into the encoding matrix. Hence, MSR codes with the least update complexity can be found. An efficient decoding scheme is also proposed that utilizes the [n, α] RS code to perform data reconstruction. The proposed decoding scheme has better error correction capability and incurs the least number of node accesses when errors are present.

Current data mining and statistical methods to extract patterns and relationships in microbiomic data are often based on several assumptions such as Euclidean, linear, continuous and metric space which may not be the true space of microbiomic data. For example, the microbial profiles (functional and taxonomic classifications) are often correlated in a hierarchical style. These assumptions prevent discovering the true relationships in microbiomic data analysis. Thus, it is urgent to develop new computational methods to overcome these assumptions and consider the microbiomic data properties in the analysis procedure. In this study, we will propose novel variable selection method based on manifold-constrained regularization (McRe). Considering the nonlinear and correlation structure of data, McRe get improved results in simulation data. The method is also applied to a microbiomic dataset.
