In group decision making problems, given the importance of obtaining an accepted solution by the whole group, the consensus has attained a great attention and it is virtually a major goal of these problems. Consensus, as traditionally meant to be a full and unanimous agreement, is often not reachable in practice. A more realistic approach is to use softer consensus measures, which assess the consensus degree in a more flexible way, and therefore reflect the large spectrum of possible partial agreements, guiding the consensus process until widespread agreement is achieved among experts. In particular, the interpretation of the consensus based on the concept of fuzzy majority has been used in the most of the consensus models proposed in the literature, as it is more human-consistent and suitable for reflecting human perceptions of the meaning of consensus. However, there are still some open questions to be addressed. In this paper, we are going to highlight some issues in order to focus researcher's attention on new problems that arise when using consensus models based on soft consensus measures in real-world applications.

Consistent image registration jointly estimates the forward and reverse transformation between two images while constraining these transforms to be inverses of one another. The consistent image registration produces mapping functions that have less pair-wise registration error and reflect the anatomical relationship of image transformation. This paper improves the consistent image algorithm based on landmark proposed by Johnson. After the convergence of consistent image registration proposed by Johnson, our method inserts new landmarks at the position where has large consistent error, in order to reduce the consistency error as a whole. Where and how to insert new landmarks are discussed in details in this paper. The Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm is effective to reduce the consistent error and improve the registration accuracy concurrently.

“Personal Epistemology” is the analysis of the ways in which an individual perceives what constitutes knowledge, its boundaries, how it is justified, and how it is related to learning. While investigation of metacognitive strategies used by students is now an established research topic within Computer Science and Information Technology education, the study of personal epistemology is relatively undeveloped. This is so despite there being significant epistemological issues associated with learning the subject itself, such as those concerned with the way in which programming exercises change from convergent to divergent problems, or the process by which software project management problems very quickly become ill-defined. In this paper, we describe a preliminary investigation into the personal epistemology of two cohorts of computing students. We review some models of personal epistemological development and describe an empirical study in which we investigated the dimensions of epistemological beliefs of two cohorts of computing students. The results show that there appears to be a wide range of epistemological belief amongst computing students. Finally, we make some observations about the importance of personal epistemology for learning in Computer Science and outline further work in this area.

The information revolution has radically changed the way we make decisions and has expanded into mobile devices capable of informing choices at the point at which they are made. However, it is arguable whether the explosion of available information helps or hinders decision making, including in important domains such as healthcare and sustainability. Improving on that is the domain of choice architecture, intended to provide decision-knowledge through understanding choice-implications and so guiding actions in effective and ethical directions (i.e. 'nudging'). Social media has largely evolved as the significant means of choice architecture, but the question remains as to whether decisions based on it are truly effective and ethical, or attracted toward social norms that reinforce poor judgment. This paper explores those issues, including how technologies can be shaped to improve decision-making, and how academic models can be used to nudge toward improved norms.

SaaS (software-as-a-Service) often uses multi-tenancy architecture (MTA) where tenant developers compose their applications online using the components stored in the SaaS database. Tenant applications need to be tested, and combinatorial testing can be used. While numerous combinatorial testing techniques are available, most of them produce static sequences of test configurations and their goal is often to provide sufficient coverage such as 2-way interaction coverage. But the goal of SaaS testing is to identify those compositions that are faulty for tenant applications. This paper proposes an adaptive test configuration generation algorithm AR (Adaptive Reasoning) that can rapidly identify those faulty combinations so that those faulty combinations cannot be selected by tenant developers for composition. The AR algorithm has been evaluated by both simulation and real experimentation using a MTA SaaS sample running on GAE (Google App Engine). Both the simulation and experiment showed show that the AR algorithm can identify those faulty combinations rapidly. Whenever a new component is submitted to the SaaS database, the AR algorithm can be applied so that any faulty interactions with new components can be identified to continue to support future tenant applications.

With the development of web technologies and the increasing size of web sites, the structure of the web application becomes more complicated, and it becomes a difficult task to model and analyze it. Web navigation, which is useful for clarifying requirements and specifying implementation behavior, can be helpful in the analysis of web application. The structure of a web application can be checked based on the web navigation model. In this paper, we present a method to model and check a web application based on web navigation. We first model the web navigation by statechart, and then translate the statechart model to Promela description (the input language of SPIN), meanwhile, the properties to be checked are specified by LTL (Lineal Temporal Logic);finally the web navigation can be checked by SPIN. A case study demonstrates the advantages of our method. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH.

Many advances in science now require sophisticated scientific software applications that facilitate data and computationally intensive experiments. However, the effective utilization of existing computational power e.g., grid and cloud platforms depends on the capabilities of scientists to implement parallel, scalable code for such experiments. Currently, tools aimed at supporting scientists are either very limited to specific domains, or require significant development using low-level code. We describe our work towards a more end user-friendly scientific applications development process, notations and toolset. We introduce a scientific application designer intended for use primarily by scientists to enable them in describing workflow, processes, entities, formulae, computation and ultimately realization code for different computing platforms. This is achieved via a set of integrated, domain-specific visual and textual languages (DSVLs). A Web-based modeling tool supports definition of new DSVLs and modeling of these applications. We are currently extending our tool to support generation of multi-core and GPU implementations, and visualization of results.

The primitive of proxy signatures allows the original signer to delegate proxy signers to sign on messages on behalf of the original signer. It has found numerous applications in distributed computing scenarios where delegation of signing rights is common. Certificate less public key cryptography eliminates the complicated certificates in traditional public key cryptosystems without suffering from the key escrow problem in identity-based public key cryptography. In this paper, we reveal the relationship between the two important primitives of proxy signatures and certificate less signatures and present a generic conversion from the latter to the former. Following the generic transformation, we propose an efficient proxy signature scheme with a recent certificate less signature scheme.

The use of virtual cluster for High Performance computing (HPC) work has a great benefit of hiding the complexity of physical infrastructure while providing a familiar HPC environment for users. Nevertheless, setting up one is still a challenging task for most users. In addition, the ability to span a virtual cluster across a multi-site cloud can even create a great potential for users to harness a much higher processing power from the cloud. In this paper, the development of a multi-site virtual cluster cloud is presented. This is done by providing the cloud infrastructures tailored specifically for virtual cluster deployment along with related utilities such as web-interface monitor and command line tools. To realize this infrastructure, an overlay network is created using Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology to merge every site into a single broadcast domain. Moreover, a Multi-tier VPN network topology is proposed to enhance the communication performance among the multi-site cloud. A smart virtual machine scheduling mechanism is introduced to reduce performance degradation caused by network delays. The experimental results show that the virtual cluster works well with highly parallel task with low communication among task. Thus, this technology can be used to support many classes of important HPC applications.

This work is motivated by the problem of synthesizing mode sequences for continuous-time polynomial switched systems in order to guarantee that the trajectories of the system satisfy certain high-level specifications expressed in linear temporal logic. We use augmented finite transition systems as abstract models of continuous switched systems. Augmented finite transition systems are equipped with liveness properties that can be used to enforce progress in accordance with the underlying dynamics. We then introduce abstraction and refinement relations that induce a preorder on this class of finite transition systems. By construction, the resulting preorder respects the feasibility (i.e., realizability) of the synthesis problem. Hence, existence of a discrete switching strategy for one of these abstract finite transition systems guarantees the existence of a mode sequence for the continuous system such that all of its trajectories satisfy the specification. We also present an algorithm, which can be implemented using sum-of-squares based relaxations, to compute such high fidelity abstract models in a computationally tractable way. Finally, these ideas are illustrated on an example.
